My motorbike was hit by someone not looking where they were going.

The impact damaged a few parts but mostly only cosmetic.
The insurance assessor has put a massive price on repairs.
They say it will cost over £4500.00 to fix. :mad:
I have priced up parts to do the work myself and can get the job done for £1500.00 !!!!!!!!
Because of the assessors insistance, my bike has now been written off as category C. I am considering buying the bike back and repairing. I am not worried about the devaluing as I intend to keep the bike for a long time.

I hear I need to have a 'special MOT'.
I assume my insurance is now null and void?

Can anyone help to explain this?

A written off vehicle put back on the road has to be inspected before it can be used on the road again to ensure it is roadworthy

Is the inspection done at the MOT centre or is it someone like VoSA?

If you are refering to a Vehicle Identity Check (VIC) which is carried out by VOSA then this only applies to cars not motorbikes.

If your insurance company allows you to buy it back then you would just need to have repairs carried out and the bike re-MOT'd.

yes as far as I'm aware it would include trikes as the VIC is just a test for cars. but maybe check with VOSA - 0870 6060 440 (or on direct.gov.uk) to be 100% - but I'm 99.9% sure.

If I only need to have a standard MOT done then it's worth my while. Its a lovely bike.
I don't need a VIC done as I have all the paperwork from when I bought the bike from the local main dealer last year

Am I right in assuming I will need to get new insurance?

Depends on your policy wording, some policies end if they make a total loss payout, some carry on for their full term.

Don’t forget if it was the third party’s fault and your policy end early you can add the extra cost of this to the claim against the TP
