306 heater problem ?

Anyone reading here have a 306 and know the answer to this ?

The heater control knob (the one that controls the speed of the fan, not the heat itself) has jammed completely, won't move any amount. I'm told that getting it out is a nightmare (? I've tried and I can't see how it comes out without removing the dash...). At the moment it's stuck on full and we've had to take the fuse out to hear out selves think in there.
I'm told a work round is to put a pot in,in place of the fuse (with a fuse inline as well) and control it from that. What I can't find is what value the pot needs to be ?

Anyone up on this stuff, I've googled it but can't find an answer anywhere ?

Replacing the inline fuse with a switch of some kind sounds a good idea if it really does mean spending ages removing the whole dash, but then you need somewhere to mount this switch so it is accessible. I would ask the same question in a Peugot/PSA forum.

I would first start to try introduce some WD40 or penetrating oil first though to see if that gets the switch moving.

I can't get access to the switch mech to get the WD40 there in the first place :(. The dial fits flush with the dash and is about one and half inches across. Even if I enter the oil at the 12 o'clock position I doubt it'll reach the pot...
