View Full Version : Cracked windscreen...
I've searched the forum which has answered some of my questions, but i'm hoping someone with experience/knowledge can help me please???
I have a crack in my windscreen (appeared yesterday). It starts at the edge on the drivers side and is about 3 inches long, hairline type, doesn't go all the way through. -Can this be fixed?
TPFT insurance (doubt covers windscreen cover)- can anyone confirm?
Car is Citroen Saxo S reg. - Could i buy the glass from the scrapyard?
IF it can't be fixed do i have to replace the windscreen straight away?
Thanks in advance:confused:

Most TPFT insurance does not cover windscreens although sometimes you can choose to add it as an extra. If you don't know that it's covered, it probably isn't.
You definitely could buy the glass from a scrapyard, but you would then need to fit it yourself or find someone who is willing to fit a second-hand windscreen, both of which might be easier said than done.
It's not safe to drive a car with a cracked windscreen and if you ignore the problem it might break completely at the most inconvenient moment. Best get it fixed.

If it's hairline, you can have it repaired cheap enough. Probably much cheaper than going down the scrappy/getting it fitted route.
thanks! I hate it when things like this happen! Off to search for a cheap(er) windscreen repairer.
much appreciated

Yes, a three inch crack sounds a bit OTT for a repair. Many chips can be repaired, but cracks are a bit more serious.
oh no, even one that hasnt gone spidery? thanks

The crack will grow and grow if you leave it - especially with the contraction/expansionas a result of the changes in temperature at this time of year.

rumour has it that if your windscreen is cracked you have lost upto 90% of the vehicles strength,so it will fail an mot, cracks are not repairable like chips, try auto windscreens or autoglass or someone like that, you may be surprized at the price they give you,it may be just as expensive as fitting a 2nd hand one.

saxo windscreens are bonded in so could not get one from scrappy would have to be proffessionaly fitted. If you ask around you'll prob get one for under £100, job done!

i know this might be an odd question but why are you only tpft these days there doesnt tend to be much differance in price then you could get your windscreen done on the insurance.
IMO avoid autoglass/auto windscreens, you'll probably find it a good bit cheaper at a small local place without all the bells and whistles

Most insurers want £60-£100 excess then pay the rest and it does not affect your no claims. I suggest, check your policy.

many of these repair firms tout for work at halfords sites,in the hope of you having insurance to pay for it.Check with one of these or go to the autoglass dept or similar, local to you.It is impssible to say if it can be repaired, without seeing it.

As well as the windscreen being an important part of the structural integrity of the vehicle, it's an essential factor in the successful deployment of front airbags. Hopefully, the time you regret the cheap/bodge/cowboy replacement windscreen won't be as you fly through the front of the car because the airbags have 'ejected' the windscreen.
If you're the sort of person that doesn't get their boiler serviced and isn't bothered about carbon monoxide poisoning. Or someone that drives on bald tyres trying to save money, then, sure, go for the cheapest option. But personally, I take the safety of my family very seriously and would prefer to get a competent, professional job done. A few extra pounds spent could mean the difference between your car being safe or not.

Autoglass have repaired my window chips for free, however, I have started to get loads of chips from motorway driving (the roads around London seem to be infamous for loose stones too) so I shall have to get a new windscreen next year. I shall probably use Autoglass as I have had good service from them before plus I will need to get the windscreen etched with my reg number (as are all the windows in my car).
If you are in the RAC or AA you may be able to get chips repaired via them but as for a cracked screen, I would replace it.
