free emision test?

friend put car in for mot and along with other faults it failed on emmision test. Now the car hadn't been serviced for ages and had sat for some time and once they done oil change, plugs,air + oil filter the exhaust seems much cleaner and the car runs better.
Problem is they dont want to do all the other work on it incase it fails on the emmissions test and they were wondering if there was anywere that did free or cheap emission tests so they can get that checked before doing the other repairs.

Where did they put it in for MOT?

If it's more of a "local" garage, ask them if they can do you just an emissions test maybe?
