I'm interested in what people regard as the 'Best Breakfast'?
I've always been bad and never really had a proper breakfast. I keep thinking cereal but many are so high in sugar.
Any advice would be greatly recieved :D

I would advocate Porridge (Porage) never could figure out the correct spelling .....
Its extremely good for you and keeps you filled up for ages... though I have yet to be able to eat it without a little brown sugar or syrup on... just a sprinkle 'honest'... keeps me going till lunch no problem..:T :T :T

If I am on a UK holiday - then it has to be a fried breakfast - egg, bacon, sausage, beans, tomato, tea and toast. If I am at home then porridge, special K red berries or toast and marmalade. If I am abroad then a continental breakfast: yoghurt, fruit, ham, cheese, croissant, jam.

Thank you :) I like porridge... Is ready brek cheating lol?.
Porridge is something I'd have to learn to make properly, I also would add stack loads of sugar!
I also like toast but never thought it sustained well?

Most porridge is so finely milled now that its easily done in the micro in 2 mins - and cheaper then ready brek

I find that readybrek is too blah!!! too smooth, too bland I just don't like the texture and I am sure that proper porrige is much better for you.... it takes a couple of minutes to cook... there really is no comparison between the two IMO

Ok, cheers! Is any brand/make of porridge better than another?

tesco organic porridge oats, slightly over £1 for a decent sized bag, nice and chunky so you feel you've eaten something.
Sweeten with honey or maple syrup, you don't need much, and it's better for you than refined sugar.
Add dried fruit to sweeten it too, I make a big batch and throw in plenty raisins, which plump up again, then heat it in the microwave at work for a lovely quick lunch.
I love granola with natural yoghurt. I used to hate natural yoghurt but its lovely with granola.

porridge all the way! I cheat & use microwave pouches with added syrup - yum diddly dum. I convince myself that the extra bit of sugar in it is alot less than what I would eat if I was hungry....

Porridge for me too, but I don't add any sugar or anything, and it has to be thick enough to stand my spoon in. I like M&S organic oats but I'm just as happy with good old Scotts porridge oats.
I'm also rather partial to a boiled egg with toastie soldiers now and again. :)

Porridge it is then, thanks guys! I'll give it a go, is it best to microwave? Silly as it sounds I assume instructions are on most packets on how to do?
I have to go to work really early and every minute counts :)

weetabix with hot milk is nice too. Put a couple in a bowl with some milk and microwave for a couple of minutes. Has a nice texture and yummy :D
I love this and porridge too - great for winter months. For the summer months I like a good quality granola or muesli with natural yoghurt and fruit.

porridge is great the scottish way, made from oatmeal instead of rolled oats .use water and a pinch of salt instead of milk and serve with fresh milk or if you want to be indulgent use cream.
another breakfast i like is eggs - scrambled or boiled with toast and juice multiple nutricional benefits and keeps hunger at bay for me till lunch

I either eat porridge with a banana (ultra filling all morning) or sugar-free Alpen with a banana.

I guess moneysavers eat porridge :) Me too. 90 secs in the micro cook it up a treat. I make it with water but add a bit of brown sugar and a dash of milk at the end to make it creamy. Or if there's leftover cream mmmm...
I prefer Flahavans porridge oats but maybe they're only available in Ireland?

Porridge is probably the 'best' in terms of health. Wholemeal bread toasted would be good too. Breakfast bars if you pick them carefully are good in an oversleeping emergency, although they probably are high in sugar.
But the 'best' breakfast in terms of my fave is the chocolate nougat filled pillows from Lidl ... I haven't dared look at the ingredients. I don't often eat them (mine's a breakfast bar!) but my sons love 'em too, so I go to Lidl every few weeks and buy 8 packets and not a lot else!

or you could fill a croissant with small pieces of toblerone and pop in the oven for 10 minutes - mmmmm :D

Yum... Chocolate...
I'm going to try a low GI diet but need to the basics right first. The egg and wholemeal toast is in my head too.

This is a bad bad suggestion ;) Alternatively you can use nutella although it is def not moneysaving if you go on to finish the pot the same day ...

Weetabix or porridge for me please, keeps me going till lunchtime. I occaisonally have toast, but always find I'm hungry earlier if I do. However, if its the weekend where I have a bit more time, I have poached eggs on my toast, which keeps me full until lunchtime.

I want to try and make my own muesli but always thought you had to cook oats but reading a recipe in a magazine today it would appear that I can use them straight out of the packet and just add some nuts, seeds, fruit etc. Am I right, do oats have to be cooked?
Savvy_Sue

No, oats don't have to be cooked, although I find muesli quite chewy to eat, prefer it to have been well soaked in milk for a while.

Does it not go soggy if you soak it? I don't usually have cereal as I can't stand it soggy, I usually have wholemeal toast but fancy a change and just thought muesli would keep me going until lunchtime and not be a soggy cereal.

Yup, it goes soggy all right - but I don't like it the other way! Each to his own!

I used to make my own muesli and I liked it with the oats crunchy personally....

hmm porridge seems to be a firm fav - i will have to try this again, despite the fact that the look and smell of it makes me feel ill!
my idea of a good breakfast is something that tastes good, will keep me from feeling hungry, and is healthy -
so my usual is weetabix with flaxseed and (a touch!) of unrefined golden caster over it. Followed by a slice of wholemeal seeded toast or bagel with low fat cream cheese mmmm and green tea (would highly recommend jasmine green tea from whittards - its the only green tea i enjoy!)
I also enjoy continental breakfasts - lots of orange juice with normal tea, yoghurt with fresh fruits and croissants - its the breakfast i always resort to towards the end of a holiday lol

Porridge is the best thing. It's good too for depression. Not sure why though.
I make mine with water rather than milk and have it with a spoon of manuka honey which I buy cheaply from Sainsburys. I use the manuka honey because it has lots of health benefits. That keeps me going till lunch time. And because it's made with water it also keeps me slim too! ;)

I hate hot porridge too. I put 2 tbsp jumbo oates in a container the night before and add cold milk and blueberries then put in fridge and by the next morning it is quite creamy and I am never hungry until lunch.I think honey and other fruit would be nice too. The hard part is the looks of disgust on my Scottish workmates face when I eat this as they all prefer theirs the traditional way.
3 Cups of coffee and 2 cigs does me.

For those of you saying Weetabix you should try Organic Weetabix they are far superior, they taste a lot wheatier and don't go soggy as quickly.
ATM I have Shredded Wheat with warm milk and a teaspoon of Demerara Sugar (Morrison's Own Brand Not Nestle Ones)

When it comes to breakfast i'm rather "anal" i have one of 3 thing:-
- Weetabix plain with semi skimmed milk.
- natural greek style yogurt with sliced banana and warm honey.
- shredded wheat with warm milk and white sugar.
washed down with white tea or coffee
My other half has the same breakfast EVERY day
- Heinz beans, 4 toast with a glass of milk and OJ.

My current usual breakfast, if I have time and/or can be *rs*d, is a mug of instant Nescafe (200g jar - InStore/Poundstretcher - £1.99) and either marmalade or Marmite on toast.
My "breakfast to impress" is orange juice, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon bits on wholemeal toast and coffee. The orange juice and coffee should be fresh. The eggs are from my local farm shop, so are organic and free range.
In fact they are so free range, that you sometimes have to be careful not to run the chickens over in the farmyard!

Here Here! Though i can only manage to eat one. I put on a dollap of low fat yogurt. eg Rachels Rhubarb or the Yeo Valley Pineapple & Mango, and i must have some sliced strawberries or banana too!

I breakfast at my desk in work because I'm in such a rush to get out in the mornings and I never feel like eating first thing. I used to have wholemeal toast and a cup of tea which I could eat whilst working, but as of the new year I'm cutting out tea because I take sugar, so I now have cereal and a glass of orange juice diluted with water. Cereal of the moment is Lidl's knock off version of Shreddies, which are lovely. I have to say that I find the cereal does keep me fuller for longer than the toast did.
But to be fair, you can't beat a proper cooked breakfast. Yum yum yum.:D
