wisdom tooth blues (Toothsmith??)

I'm having issues with a naughty wisdom tooth.

It isn't meant to exist. As a teenager I was told I'd (congentially) only ever have 23 teeth (22 adult teeth and 1 milk tooth), that there were no wisdom teeth in my head, and that my jaw is only just big enough for the teeth I have. Sounded palusible as my mum doesn't have any wisdom teeth either.

Well, I do have a wisdom tooth, and it's growing backwards right out of the back of my upper jaw. So far it hasn't been too much of a problem (it's been a couple of years since I first found it). In the last few days though it's been rubbing against the soft tissue at the back of my cheek. It's currently very sore, and is starting to affect eating. I'm using bonjela on it, which is helping (and it's yummy).

I can't see the tooth at all when I open my mouth, and I'm really really worried about how hard it is going to be to remove. My mouth is only little and the tooth is in an awkward place. It's come as a shock given that for 15 years I never thought I'd have any more teeth!

(Doesn't help that I work in London and my dentist is back home in Cardiff, so it's going to be ages before I can get a Friday appointment)

So, how bad is this going to be??? :(

PS - I've had a fair bit of dental work, and my dentist is fab, so I'm not scared of going in, just of this which is obviously worse than anything else I've had done.

I would say that most little runty wisdom teeth pop out quite easily just with a local anaesthetic - especially if they have actually come through into the mouth.

I did one this very morning!! Patient didn't even know I'd begun when I'd finished (Ooh er missus:D).

Teeth that are still buried can be tricky, but once through, even though they seem a long way back and inaccessible, they don't give much problem to remove.

Can't be sure without seeing it though.

I'm not worried about having the tooth out - I'm just worried about how the hell they're going to get to it - it's right at the back and hidden from view. I can't even get my finger to it to put bonjela on (so the tip of my tongue is numb too). How on earth will they get to it?

I had soft impacted upper wisdom teeth out under a local many years ago, my lowers were fine with nothing to press on them though.

I am back in this week to see another dentist with a scalpel :eek: , but still under local anasthetic.

How long will it take for me to feel ok after?

Just because YOU can't see or reach it, doesn't mean someone else can't!

Thats what you call bedside manner!!! I wonder if proctologists say the same:rotfl:

My brother had a similiar problem and his dentist managed it but he just had to have a stitch in it and return the next week for it to be removed.

Listen to toothsmith, wait and see what your dentist says first. They angle your head for that reason, something you can't do yourself (unless like the advert, you've got a fliptop head).

my wisdom teeth are sitting pointing at a 45 degree angle forward into my back teeth! Now if only i can persuade them not to grow!

Just to let you know (and hopefully reassure you) I had my errant wisdom tooth out this morning.

And I had to ask if it was over, it was that quick!


I think it involved a scalpel...but had my eyes so tightly screwed shut I don't know.

Guess mine was one of those runty ones then - dentist took one look and said he'd get it out in no time. He wasn't wrong. He did say it was a bit weird though - he said they should have 3 roots and mine just had one curly one :confused:

It's a bit sore, but I've discovered I can manage custard, so I'll not starve!!!
