when i was younger and had toothache i was given clove oil (oil of cloves) from chemist, dont think it was that great tho, it burned so prob took mind off the pain for a few mins, now if i have toothache i will take something with codeine in, like co-codemol or veginin, i find these quite strong tho so only use when i'm at home. hope you feel better soon,

Heavy Door & Piece of String
Tie string to tooth & door knob
Slam Door - tooth out - end of problem!
Seriously - Oil of Clove is best "home" remedy. If it is inflamed then a salt solution swilled round the mouth and spat out MAY help.

You don't say how old your son is? Not a natural remedy but in times of toothache etc neurofen plus works well. If he is young, try a combination of paediactric neurofen (ibuprofen) and calpol.

How old your son is is important.
I wouldn't recommend mucking about with anything. Clove oil can cause a chemical burn if patient is sensitive, or it's not placed well.
Whatever you do - DON'T hold anything warm against it.

Plenty of fluids.
Teething gel & anbesol won't help. Calpol might.
Rest.
Is it a baby tooth or an adult one?
Ask your dentist to talk to you about the reason for it happening, and to talk to you & your son about what diet changes can be made to reduce the likelyhood of it happening again in the future.

Why can't the dentist do it?
I've taken teeth out of much younger kids under local. At 10, some kids are having adult teeth out in preparation for braces.
Did the dentist offer to do it?

oops, sorry for my earlier post, i must have not noticed the 'son' bit, (doh) i wouldn't have recommeded strong codiene based painkillers if i'd have read it properly. hope he feels better soon.
