View Full Version : What should I do now?

Oct 19th 2006 - I bought a 02 peaugeot 807.
Oct 27th 2006 - The car began juddering and I got a message saying - Unblock diesel filter. I took it back to garage, but the couldn't find a fault.
Jan 2007 - March 2007 - April 2007 - July 2007 the car was returned again where they had the car for a week to run it and see the problem. They have tried various things and the car seemed ok until 2 weeks ago, when it began kangarooing and saying Unblock Diesel Filter again.
They have collected the car again this morning, and I am not happy. The extended warrenty is up on 19th Oct, and I am concerned that the car will be returned back to me this week, I am going away on holiday on 18th oct, so when I return, the car will be out of warrenty. Should this problem occur again, I think they will say 'tough luck, it's not our problem now'.
The problem is that it seems as if pertol isn't getting through properly, so the car hesitates, then rights itself. this happens with 80% of all journeys.
I love the car itself, but I'm very unhappy about it's performance, and the garage know this.
What do you suggest I do/say to them?
MANY thanks,
Sally

have they changed the filter?
is this a non pug dealer? is the filter message flashing on the dash or are they reading fault codes?
Yorkshire-Lady

It's a peugeot dealer. They put a new filter in the first time it happened. (So I'm told) The car bleeps and the message flashes up on screen while the car is juddering. It's also saying Tyres Punctured, but they aren't!
Thanks for taking the time to reply, it's much appreciated.

Just checking that you are using diesel and not petrol?
Yorkshire-Lady
08-10-2007, 1:11 PM
It's a diesel car, and I have never put petrol in!
When it first happened, I did wonder if at some point in it's life, someone had put the wrong fuel in.

Have the deisel filter replacerd and make sure that the "fuel additive" is topped up. Normally requires about one litre and half hours labour to do. ANY peugeot garage will know about this.
Its called the Particulate Filter. Or FAP for short.
Peugeot use this system to get the emissions lower on the car, so it gets into a lower road tax bracket...
harveybobbles
08-10-2007, 6:18 PM
Every time you fuel up, some of the additive is put into the fuel. If you do short journies you will clog the filter up sooner. Every now and then give the car a good hard thrashing down tghe motorway in 3rd or 4th gear.
type "peugeot FAP filter" into google.

Oh, and as for the tyres being punctured - that is just one of the pressure sensors on the tyre valve that has come off/broke/split. Nowt to worry about. Ask the Pug dealer to deactivate the tyre sensors.

Though I forgot to ask - how old is the car? do you know if in its previous ownership the FAP filter has been changed? Reason I ask is we had a Pug HDi today at work with the same fault, but I traced it to the pressure switch behind the battery that was giving a false reading to the cars ECU, thus putting the warning message up. It got water in it - a common fault I found out.

There's confusion here (for me anyway) between which filter is being talked about.
The Diesel filter removes muck from the fuel going into the engine. The particulate filter removes muck (particulates[soot]) from the exhaust coming out of the engine.
The OP needs to clarify with the dealer which they mean and which one they changed/cleaned.
harveybobbles
10-10-2007, 12:11 PM
I'm referring to the FAP (particulate filter)
We remove it and steam clean it for about 10 minutes to remove the soot.
Top the additive up and job done.
Most places will want to replace the FAP with a new one or an exchange unit, which is available thru Pug dealers.
But it's all costly. So steam cleaning is our answer...!

Update - well, no update really. They have had the car since monday morning, and there's been no call from them as to how it is going. I'm a childminder, and need 7 seats. They've lent me a 207, which is a nightmare.
I'm using one of DH's cars, just so I can get 3 car seats in.
Dh is calling them at lunchtime to see what's occurring.
With regard to the filters, I only know about the deisel filter, as that's the one with the message coming up constantly.
Thanks for your help guys.

Yes, it will put up that message.
Tell them that they shoud remove the FAP filter and steam clean it or pressure wash it. And to find out which colour additive to use to top it up.
Trust me...

Another update - They are fitting a new TURBO today. They put it on the diagnostic machine and it showed an intermittent fault.
I 'should' get it back tomorrow, but am off on holiday for 3 weeks on thursday. The car is also out of warrenty while I'm away.
I hope that it's ok.

A NEW TURBO...?! WTF for?!
I'd be telling them what I put in my previous post hun! Please!
Also, who is paying for a new turbo?
The turbo will show up as an intermittant fault when the "unblock deisel filter" message comes on - as the car goes into what is called "limp mode" - reducing the perfoamance.
harveybobbles
15-10-2007, 7:32 PM
So, did you get it back today then...?!
What's the latest?
Yorkshire-Lady
16-10-2007, 7:36 AM
Getting it back today, all being well.
I'm a childminder and it's been a nightmare juggling car seats and kiddes.
When we get home from holiday, we're selling it.
It will have full service history, recent service and full MOT.
My friend also has an 807, and hers went in for an intermediate service yesterday. They want £900 off her, which is £200 less than their original quote for work needed.
I'd rather swap for a bike than keep mine.
Sally xx
I think I'd be asking to keep the old turbo, you never know it might come in handy one day. - it could still be good. sounds like they are clutching at straws on what to do next.
Still harvey's idea about the FAP filter doesn't sound like an expensive repair, so you could take it to someone else and ask that they do that for you.
Yorkshire-Lady
16-10-2007, 5:59 PM
Well, so far, no car.
We phoned them at 5pm, and they were busy and would get back to us. They told my DH on Friday that I'd have the car today. That was only after DH ahd phoned them to ask. They have had the car since LAST monday.
Their customer service is way below acceptable.

Ok Harveybobbles.....get this.
My car is still in bits apparently! They have fit the new turbo, together with some sort of belt which was making a noise. All this is under warrenty. It seems that the car is still making a funny noise - this noise wasn't present prior to them having the car.
I am leaving for Manchester airport this afternoon to fly to Vegas in the morning - flying home then from San Francisco on 4th nov. They are keeping the car til we get home.
This means they will have had it 4 weeks exactly!
I am waiting for them to call me to arrange them picking up the courtesy car, as it'll be only sat in our drive til we arrive home.
This is from a Main Dealer in West Yorkshire.
AVOID THEM !!!

Don't they offer any more extended warranty?

Hey hey slow down you lot!!
Give a girl a break! Crossing seeming,y hundreds of time zones and being stuck on a plane for god knows how long plays havoc with my body clock!
Ok....................You ready or shall I give you all time to calm down.
When I went away on holiday, the car was still making a strange noise despite a new turbo and belts fitted. The FAP filter has been replaced.
The boss of the garage noticed that the car made this noise as it was started first thing in the morning being moved around to get access to other cars etc, so he took the keys home one night so it couldnt be moved. The following morning, he asked a mechanic to start the car, while he had his head under the bonnet. It made this noise which he thinks was something to do with the cam shaft.
He got the warrenty people back again, and they stood round my car discussing it. The decided to put in a new engine.
This was done under warrenty last friday, despite it actually running out on Oct19th. They have had so much involvement with it that there was no way that the warrenty company could have washed their hands with it.
So........It's had a new engine including injectors. Please be aware that I AM female, and do not fully understand the ins and outs of cars. So if this sounds far fetched........who knows.
All I know is that I 'should' get the car back this week sometime, and the engine has a 12 month warrenty. I also will have to inform swansea about the new engine number.
I'm still tempted to get rid of it, but DH thinks it'll be like a new car now.
Sally
So........It's had a new engine including injectors.
Hey I was right.:rotfl:
Welcome back, hope you had a good holiday, as you can see we have all been worried sick in case you had funny engine noises on the plane.:D

Cajef - many thanks for your message. We had a wonderful holiday, despite a 'touch and go' as we landed at chicago. (Wheels touched down, but we were blown off course so took off again - VERY scary)
Our first hire car broke down, we were caught up in the Los Angeles fires, and were in San Francisco when the 5.8 earthquake hit!
The engine is brand new so time will tell.

YL... I came to know of this thread as you posted a link on another forum.
Do things in writing, that way there is a record. TBH this is the problem when you buy a second hand car, eg I always buy when 6-18 months old and only sell when the big problems arrive.
Get the garage to extend your warranty free of charge due to the problems.... and enjoy the 807... you do afterall have a new engine and turbo:D

UPDATE
The garage have rung and are delivering my car to me this evening.
The bill to the warrenty company is just under £7500.
My MOT, service, new tyre and oils for the new engine have cost me £185.
I've been told to 'run it in' for around 1000 miles, then let them have it again to check it over. Also keep an eye on water and oil levels.
Hopefully, this is the last of it, but the first time I hear 'ding' - Unblock deisel filter, then rest assured you'll be the first to know!!
Happy weekend everyone.
Sally xx
Ooh the end is in sight, after all these weeks of suspense lets hope the beast is cured, and we don't hear from you again (only on this subject of course).:j
It has been a long saga but hopefully with a happy ending, there is not much more that can go wrong with it now but we shall all be looking out just in case.:D
You have a good weekend and don't die of fright when you come to fill up with fuel, it has just cost me £40 for half a tank today, think I am going to start walking._pale_

Spoke too soon.
Went to the car yesterday morning, loaded it with kiddies and it wouldnt start. I rang AA who took 2 hours to come. he diagnosed a bad earth. He got it started and suggested I rang the dealer to sort it, as it was obviously something left over from puttingin the new engine. The battery registered 12.37 so that was not faulty.
The garage sent a courtesy car for me, but the guy who brought it couldnt get my car started. We tried to jump it from his car, but it turned over very sluggishly then just clicked under the bonnet.
I phoned the AA guy who had given me his mobile number and he said to attach the jump leads to the courtesy car, then attach the red clip to the battery in my car, and the black clip to a big chunk of metal in the engine to earth it.
There were sparks and smoke, so we abandoned it. (This was all done by the delivery guy who is also getting to the eng of his teather with this saga!)
It was left that the garage will come and recover it this morning and drop me off a courtesy car.
To say I am brassed off is an understatement.
After 14 yrs as a childminder, and never taking one day off sick in all those years. I am now getting a reputation as being unreliable. I NEED 7 seats to do my job. Parents are getting fed up of me trying to re-arrange collections/drop offs on different days due to my not having enough seats. (My school run is not walkable unfortunately.)
I appreciate this could just be a simple fix, but they had the car for 5 weeks. I had to 'make do' for 5 weeks. I get the car back on the firiday, and by monday it's off the road again.
A very cross YL.

I have a feeling that this latest problem was something simple, and will be sorted out today. I've been to toddlers this morning and they collected the car while I was away. I think it'll be brought back to me either this afternoon or tomorrow, and they will hope that's the last of the matter.
My DH has already been sourcing out garages for us to go look at getting shut of it at the weekend. Due to losing this family, I cannot afford to put any more money towards another car.
I am So brassed off.............what is the chance of them taking the car back off me?!
Sally xx
  Think it is definitely time to cut your losses and run, seems to be one thing after another.
Have you considered a Ford Galaxy or Vauxhall Zafira instead of French rubbish.
Yorkshire-Lady
14-11-2007, 5:08 PM
Zafira is not suitable, as the boot wont take the sorts of buggies I have. Sometimes I need a single, other times I need a double. We also use the car at weekends and the back seats are not suitable for my long legged kids!!
I've never liked the Galaxy/Sharan/Alhambra. And I refuse to have a car I don't like! It has to be a love affair with me, the full works!
Sally xx
Dh has been looking at the Honda FRV - 6 seats but massive boot, and the Mercedes Vaneo.
Can thoroughly recommend a Honda I have had one from new, the most reliable car I have ever had.:j
Mercs are OK but expensive for service.

15-11-2007, 8:19 AM
Oh Harvey I have done! I was even in tears the other day after the family gave me notice. The have now found the bad earth and had sorted it. The car is back. It 'appears' to be fine.
I used it last night but the decision has been made - It's definately going.
My DD2 works for Honda and rang the PUG garage yesterday asking if they'd buy it back off me. The chance of a full refund is not an option I don't think.
She explained that as a gesture of goodwill, they should offer me a fair price. HHm, they said they will get back to her. I wouldnt hold your breath!
I will be taking the car around on Sat/Sun to see if a deal can be struck on something suitable. I can't afford to put more cash into it.
Thanks for caring x

Whatever takes your fancy, before parting with any of the folding green stuff it might be worth checking the Honestjohn website to see if there are any hidden nasties endemic to that make/model, and perhaps investing in an AA/RAC inspection. Cars are complex pieces of machinery, and there are quite a few lemons out there, regardless of the advertising hype. I hope that doesn't sound patronising, I'm as prone as anyone to a sudden common sense failure when faced with a shiny whizz-bang creation. More than most, in fact...
Seriously though, a bit of basic research can avoid a lot of expense and heartache, and help is at hand, even if it costs a few bob.

I was offered 5750 today at a large mixed garage, one of these supermarket type places. I asked what it 'booked' at, he said 6500. I appreciate it is only a guide, but he had already said my car was one of the nicest 807's he'd seen, and that it had been very well cared for. We advised him about the new engine, prior to his offer. I was looking at a Grand Scenic - nice, but not enough room for double buggy. I also looked at an 05 Galaxy - it still did nothing for light my fire. They also had an 04 Espace - nice, but too expensive if all I'm being offered is 5750.
My DD's Honda dealership has offered 6200 against an FRV, so I test drove one of those this afternoon. It was lovely, and very nippy. They are getting a 1.7 SE in on tuesday for me to look at, and test drive if I loose. I can have it at cost + £100, so that is definately an option.
Whatever I get, I'll make sure I get a good warrenty.
I was disappointed with £5750.

Cool.
The FRV is a 6 seater tho it? Can you cope with having someone on your gear stick while driving? When you go for a test drive - take the kids and buggy with you to make sure it all fits!
I always advise customers to bring their everyday belongings with them for a test drive!
I have a Grand Scenic, Mazda Premacy, a Touran and 2 Espaces in. All 7 seaters. All diesel, apart from the G. Scenic.
Yorkshire-Lady
17-11-2007, 8:06 PM
I actually took my double buggy to test in the boots - the FRV swallowed it and asked for more! I can manage with 6 seats. In my childminding business, I prefer to offer excellent care for few, rather than adequate care to many.
We have had 2 espaces in the past. One was M reg diesel Automatic which wasn't the right engine as we towed a caravan at the time. The second was bought basically to go to France and bring our DD and her fiance home when they left after working at disneyland Paris for 3 yrs. It would have cost an arm and a leg to hire a van, so we bought an old N reg with 150k on the clock. It had been a prized posession for it's one previous owner, who had EVERY receipt for EVERY item he'd ever bought in connection with his car. He even had a piece of the box with the seriel numbers from all bulbs/filters etc. It was a work of art!
We sold it and still see it regularly on the school run - still going strong.
Oh, what to do?!

To be honest, I just want rid. Today, the car bleeped and displayed the message - BRAKE PADS WORN. I've only done 100 miles since the car was serviced and MOT'd, and surely if the pads looked worn, they should have been brought to my notice and I'd have had them replaced.
I've had a 6 seater before - Multipla, but although the seat configuration worked fine, I got not respect on the road!!
At least the FRV looks nice! AND I'd get 6200 for my heap of spanners!
