I know most people hate getting stuck behind caravans when driving but does anyone know if caravans need to be MOT'd?
Thanks

As I understand it no formal MOT requirements but it must be safe to be on the road, and as such should still be subjected to checks to ensure it is safe. I'm sure you wouldn't want a caravan that would fall to pieces or have braking problems or turn over on the road etc.

For this reason I wonder if a motorhome could be a better option on the second hand market as you have some assurance that the whole thing is roadworthy from the last MOT.

im sure you could still take a caravan to your local garage or caravan repair centre and they would check it over for you every year if you really want a caravan.

There is no legal need for service/inspection to caravas.

They do need to be road-legal, though. This relates to tyres. brakes, lighting & not having any obvious defects, which could cause problems/harm to other road users. Things like sharp edges, from body damage & loose trim etc.

The main concern with lack of maintainence, apart from the above, is not to have the gas system checked regularly, as this is a potentially leathal thing, if it were to become faulty. But only really applies once it's off the road, of course!

not mot'd as such, but they do need to be serviced.it's in your best interest to keep the caravan serviced for firstly your own safety and secondly other motorist and third if you ever sell on your caravan,as it attracts better attention with full service history.there is NO LAW to say that you have to have your caravan serviced, but if something should go wrong (heaven forbid) i'm sure the police will find sometime for you to be charged with.
