I always respond to offers like this.
In the past I have had.
Free Greetings cards.
Free Scales
Free Thermometer, and hopefully soon a free wok.
I always ring and say I don't want to continue to receive anymore items and that's that. No problems at all. It states that there is no obligation and you keep the gift whatever you decide.
:)

Same here, Sparky!

Once had a standard (i.e. non erm, non-stick) wok, and wiped it and treated it with oil as divadee says, and it was OK, but ... A non-stick one is just easier to look after, and you don't get real or imagined touches of rustiness to the taste of your egg-fried rice!

Hi Droopsnout
I've already got a Teflon one I've had for about 3 years and it's still as good as new, but a spare one will be handy if I'm cooking for more people.

Thanks for that OP - much appreciated will await my new wok with interest and can honestly say I will have no problems keeping my husband away from washing it!!! ::)

For those who are getting email not valid - are you on NTL? As i applied with my supanet email address which went through no problem - then it asks if you want to send an email to a friend so I sent one to myself at my NTL address just out of interest & it said email not valid. I tried my brother's supanet account & it sent the message no problem.

Had this one last year.

You may need to ring them as online orders don't seem to go through that well...

Point to watch out for - - they denied all knowledge of our call to cancel plus we were told that we had to pay the return postage.

Forgot to say that the wok was really bad quality - you could get a better one in a £1 store...

Hi there,

Rest assured you will not be "hurting anyone's feelings" ... they are a company out to make money and no individual is going to be in tears if you decide to return the recipe cards! You are legally being given the option to return the cards and keep the wok ... the decisions is yours.

I received the wok, the 36 cards and the spices and an invoice for £4.something. I rang to say that I wanted to discontinue and cancel my subscription, and asked if they want me to send the cards back.

The operator said that she can let me have the pack for £2.50 if I want to keep it and I said:

'What about if I decide to send it back, do I need to send everything or just the cards?' I added that I recall that the wok came free no matter what my decision about the cards.

She said that she could not tell me until I decide whether I want to keep the pack or not and said that it cost them a lot of money to get the cards back. She was quite stroppy!

I said I still want to cancel the sub and would she like me to send the cards back?

She replied no, I can keep the cards and pass them to someone who would be interested.

So it seems that the whole thing is free as an introductory offer. I made a note of the call and also de-registered automatically on their telephone number.

The wok is a cheap thing, but hey, it's foir free, it will do while I do not have a decent frying pan!

One thing to note: the number is an 0870 so I wonder if they make their money like that, as she kept me chatting for a while!

surprise surprise... the wok is here! Haven't opened it yet though. Want to find out about returning/cancelling subscription first. Just tried to call the 0870 number but was on hold for 3 minutes! I do have 10 days right? Might try again later this week. Unless anyone can tell me for sure how to return the recipe cards or an easier way (without having to speak to someone!) to just cancel the whole thing?

any help much appreciated!

I had a similar experience as Caterina.
I received the pack on Friday 26th (invoice was dated 22nd) and rang today to cancel.

Firstly the operator told me that i had to pay the £4.99 for the introductory pack and then after that my subscription would be cancelled. I replied that I didn't want the cards so could I just send them back. She told me it would cost me more to send everything back than £4.99, meaning that I had to send the wok back too.

I pointed out that their website said the wok was free whatever you decided and she replied "Oh is that what it says!" She then offered me the cards for £2.00. When i said i didn't want them she said I could just keep them and that she will cancel my subscription.

So they obviously have that option all the time, just try to get a bit of money out of people!

Received my free wok today and again the invoice dated 22nd Nov.

Just rang up to cancel and was told that the wok was only free to subscribers.

I explained that the web site said "A FREE WOK" and he said i should be more careful in future.

I told him no way would they be getting any money for it, then he said " well just keep it" then slammed the phone down... LOL seems like they are having a bad day to me !;D

I've sent an email as well, via the 'contact us' link on their website.

What's the worse that can happen if I just ignore the whole thing now? Seems like they don't want the recipe cards back anyhow. So if I don't return anything, don't actually speak to someone about cancelling my subscription, don't pay anything..................... ?

By the way, my pack included a 68g box of Schwartz Chicken Seasoning. Anyone else got that?

well they could keep sending you recipe cards every week, until you owed them enough to justify sending round a bailiff? i guess? :-/

At least you lot got all of yours. When I opened the box, the only things in it were the wok and the actual storage box.

Got mine this morning - so lets get this right - wok, cards, chicken seasoning, storage box all for £4.99. Then I can cancel the subscription with nothing else to pay? Have I got it right? Or does the whole lot have to go back even if I don't want to carry on with the subscription?

I just rang and cancelled(took 3 mins) and had no probs.
They did try on the "you have to send back the wok etc and pay for the postage" trick but thanks to the posts on this site, I stood my ground and was told to keep the lot without any hassle and they'd cancel my balance.
So thank you all those who posted their experiences and warnings........

Right, just gone to their web site and sent a message on their form through the "contact" link, saying I'd received my "free" wok and cards and wanted them to close my account as no more cards required. !Left my 'phone number, so will see if I hear further. !Expecting someone to contact me to say they want their £4.99 but, you never know, they may be totally fed up with all of us cancelling and just leave it. ::)

I called earlier today to cancel my 'trial' and they actually shouted at me!!

The first CS person got really stroppy and said I had to pay 4.99 and p&p to return everything, and when I read the content of their website she got really mad and put me through to her supervisor. Even funnier, her supervisor was really nice at first, until he realised I wanted to cancel and keep the wok, and he flew completely off the handle - accusing me of taking advantage etc etc (yes, semi true but hey that's business!)

He eventually said 'look, i'm going to cancel your invoice, you can keep everything and you'll never hear from us again' and hung up on me!!

Was a little bit dumbfounded after that - I can only think they have a policy of aggression to try and bully the more vunerable into paying money.... very dodgy company indeed!!

mattyh
30-11-2004, 11:52 PM
incidentally if you don't believe they've cancelled your subscription (which I didn't) then they have an online account thingy at www.imponline.co.uk

Managed to confirm they'd settled and cancelled my 'trial' and taken a screen grab.

They can wok off. ;)

I've just been on the phone to cancel my account and return the goods etc as they were apparently ignoring my emails. First call was a joke, as mentioned in other posts it seems that they've set up their call handling service to make money from the 0870 number. The voice messages are strung out with unexplainable gaps in between and unnecessary keypad requests. Then they automatically put you on hold while they advertise their other products. When you finally get through they try everything they can (and their not so polite) to get you to give them some money for the 'free trial offer' (see earlier posts). I was appalled and said that i'd think about it. THEN I came to the forum and got the lowdown. Phoned back again, pressed keys early to skip through the menu, and selected Option 1 to 'pay your invoice'. Got through loads quicker and the operator didn't complain when I said that I wanted to cancel and return the goods. She said 'keep them for free'! I think it depends on the operator and how long they've been in the job/at work today (she said good afternoon and it was morning and sounded NFI). Think I'll drop OFTEL an email about the blatent abuse of the 0870 system, it can't hurt to try especially if they get more than one complaint (hint hint). Freebie or not its unfair on all their customers.

I was actually quite nervous about calling them up to cancel my subscription after reading previous posts! I just don't like rudeness at all. Anyway, I called up early this morning just after 9am and was on hold for less than 3 minutes. Spoke to a guy who wanted my customer ref number then asked to confirm name and telephone number. I NEVER PROVIDED A TELEPHONE NUMBER! The cheek. I told him I definitely did not give a phone number before and he actually said "That's right" then gave some lame excuse about 'just in case there's a problem and we need to contact you'. Rubbish :P But then continued, "You don't have to give a phone number if you don't want to." duh! politely declined to give a contact number. Was then asked if I wanted to suspend my account for three months or just cancel it all. duh again:P He confirmed cancellation, mentioned nothing about returning recipes and hung up on me. ::)

anyone unwrapped the recipes yet? or experimented with them? I'm wary about touching the recipes in case they write to me and demand them back:P

I have now received wok as well. Have not cancelled yet. I have looked at www.imponline.co.uk to check my account. It asks for a customer number (9 digits starting with a '9'). The customer number on my statement starts with a 9 unfortunately it has 12 numbers in it and the window for the account number only takes 11 numbers. So I can not get into see my account. :-[

New number for you to use, after using the saynoto0870 site on the IMP number above, spoke to their switchboard who gave me another number which does just the job:

02070199556

I didn't bother pressing anything when it asks to press the * key, then it puts you straight in the queue to speak to someone. Didn't have to wait long (about a minute).

Spoke to a helpful chap and it went something like this:

ME: Hi I'd like to cancel and arrange to return the stuff
IMP: You've just recieved the intro pack for pan or wok?
ME:Yes
IMP: Can I ask if you ordered it as we've had a lot of calls and emails about this one?
ME: Yes, I ordered it, but it was so long ago I have since bought some recipe books and don't need to collect the cards. So where do I return them
IMP: OK, no problem, saves everyone hassle if you don't send them back so you can keep them and I've cancelled your account. Thanks for calling

It as all very polite and easy, so it's not all horror stories.

ps. I don't think it was an actual "imp" on the end of the phone! ... but you never know .........

Just rang on the 0207 number schmooser gave, spoke to nice if rather bored (ie, oh, no, another cancellation!) lady. Told her I wanted to cancel. SHe asked why, I said, got a cookery book, not that impressed with cards anyway thanks. She asked what I wanted to do so I said return them please. She said, too much money to return, please keep them with our compliments and account cancelled. ;D

On phone for less than 3 minutes, cost 1p (18866) - all the freebies. Cheers to OP. :D

My wok came a few days ago and I finally got enough courage to phone the company up just now after reading the stories on this thread and it was quite easy and quick!

BUT the operator said that I should pay the invoice anyway so I told him that the wok is free on the website and asked when should I send the goods back. He said the account was cancelled before all this and I think he tried to make me pay the £4.99 anyway!

So thanks to all of the people who wrote the stories so I could use them as guides!

Right Ive thought about it im cancelling ;D

;D

I read all these posts with interest and gave it a go today (although i had emailed them about 3 days ago without any reply). They also gave the usual speel of charging £2.99, I said no, they said it would cost me more to retrun it, I said I'm keeping the wok as it was free and would just send back recipe cards which wouldn't be that expensive, they then said it would confuse the system and just to keep all of it.

Then got my wife to do the same thing with her order with the strict instructions not to cave or let them bully her - same speel.

Thanks to everyone for the advice.

Was wishing that I hadn't bothered ordering in the first place, but now that it's done I feel better.

Although, lets just see if any demands for payment turn up (which wouldn't surprise me judging by their tactics so far !).

Have just ordered my wok...then read the entire thread. Wish I'd done it the other way around. What I can't understand though is if this deal is so troublesome to them, why on earth are they still offering it? Silly people!

Just phoned to cancel, pretty much the same routine :

Me : "HI just received wok + cards and dont want cards so please can I return them and cancel"
Them: "Why don't you want them"
Me : "Wife is getting recipe book for christmas"
Them: "Oh ok, it will cost more to return than the £4.99"
Me : "No, I just need to return the recipe cards that'll be less than £1"
Them : "No, you have to return everything"
Me : "No, the offer on the website says I keep the wok even if I don't want the cards"
Them : "I haven't seen the website [yeah right] but I think it means the cards you receive AFTER this offer"
Me : "No, it clearly says I only pay if I decide to keep the introductory offer and the wok is mine whatever I do"
Them : "Well, you have to return the box" [!!!]
Me : "Are you sure? Did you say Box or Wok?"
Them : "The box"
Me : "Well that's pretty light anyway"
Them : [getting annoyed] "Umm ok, well I'm going to check that offer now so just keep the stuff for free ok"
Me : "Thank you, bye-bye!"

Well what a terrible experience! Thats the last time I go for freebies. The lady I spoke to was well moody! She said I had to pay for everything! I said let me speak to your manager and I did. I told him that I didnt want the stuff and he said I have to pay for everything! I said no your website blah blah, and he refused to listen. He was Worse! He accused me of using their company that I had no intention of keeping the recipe cards. Then I said I dont want the stuff take it back and he said I have to pay for delivery. I said no and I asked for his name - that I was going call trading standards now. He had a go at me, then he said that I could keep everything with compliments and that I will never hear from them again. I was dazed - what poor customer relations.

I dont recommend this freebie - hassle.

Nick.

Hi Mimi,

I've only emailed them too. I sent an email via their website on the day I received the goods, and I've just sent another one now.

As far as I'm concerned, if they choose to ignore my emails that's their problem - they're not getting a penny out of me!

Might be worth recording the calls and putting them on internet as how not to have good customer service. :)
Any chance that they will still bill you if you just contact via e-mail (like the studio) and then add large late charges if you don't pay them?

I called them first thing and the guy seemed to be reading off a card. Anyway canceled and I would think that as a previous stated call them early as the later on in the day the worst the mood gets. What a nightmare !!!!!!!

I won't be bullied by anyone - they are in the wrong, I'm not, if they want to carry it on to the point that it goes to court I'm more than willing to stand up for my rights.

Maybe it'll teach them a lesson - don't make promises that you've no intention of keeping!

This is my first post, i've been a lurker on the board for about 2 months.

I took the free wok offer. I was ready to pay the £4.99 and just cancel my account, without all the hassel of sending the stuff back (I hadn't read that the company couldn't be arsed to pay for return postage). So I phoned them up, and paid the £4.99 on my Mastercard.

However, checking my details online, the day after I used the card there's a £500 payment to Ladbrokes in London.
I've phoned the emergency line to cancel my card, but they can't start an investigation until proper customer services start at 8am. Now i'm not saying that it was someone at the company that stole my credit card details, i've used the card on the web quite a lot, but just be careful.

just rung up and 1st time I got a right one she wouldna have any of it and was insisting I cough up the £4.99 :-/ I cancelled the account anyway...

Then I rang back and got through said I wanted to cancel she said it had already been cancelled!!!! ;D

I said ok how do I go about sending the items back ?

she said well it will cost a lot more to send back and she would right the invoice off and close the account and I was to keep the pack with their compliments ;D

Woohoo Result ;D ;D ;D

I rang this am as I've had no confirmation of my 2 emails and asked the girl to ensure my account had been cancelled. It had not(!), so she cancelled it there and then.

She asked me to pay the £4.99 and I said no as the wok was free and I therefore was sure I could keep it. She said she had been working there for a year and knew what she was talking about but, because I persisted, she went to check. She then said I could keep the wok, but everything else was to be returned. I argued this, but she said I HAD to return the cards, etc. and that was that!

I don't see why I should get involved in paying P&P ... do you all think I could get away without returning these. ???

tinalives
07-12-2004, 4:11 PM
Heck! Well I did a printout of the web page with the original offer saying you could keep the wok 'whatever you decide', but I suppose that if they insist on the other stuff being returned then we'll have to do it. :-/

Having said that, they've not responded to my emails, but I've got no intention of ringing them up. If they pursue the matter in writing I'll happily respond in writing, and I'll return everything if they like (except the wok!) but I'm not paying a penny! ;)

Mmmm, just checked the box everything came in and it's not just the recipe cards in there, there's also the box that the cards should go in while you're collecting them. !I'm not going to mess about packaging everything up ... too much hassle (and expense ::)). !I'll just leave it I think and, if anyone decides to contact me (which I doubt!), I'll say it was agreed I can keep everything.

At least I can keep (and use) the wok ... not bothered about the recipe cards anyway, they can stay wrapped up in the garage for now. ::)

Reading all these previous posts about the trouble people have had with this company's customer service, I suspect that they are offering their staff a bonus if they can get people to keep and pay for their cards. Or possibly having their wages cut if they don't!! - Horrible company.

Still haven't received mine, but I certainly won't take any b*ll*cks from them when it does arrive, thanks to everyone's posts on this thread.

Cheers, chaps! :)

sounds a bit like a thing we did years ago.It was wildlife cards that came with free mini binoculars.
The cards were lovely but my son was too young to appreciate them and they got damaged really quickly. When we rang to cancel , the lady on the phone sounded quite disgusted that we had the cheek to not want the cards but still keep the binoculars. >:(
We very nearly had an arguement before she would accept we were in the right. Grrr

Can I ask you when did you cancel your order?

If you only got an email yesterday I presume the card would have been sent out before the email.

I am quite worried as I have emailed them 4 times to cancel and they have not replied once.

Who would want to pay £4.99 for the cards not me! You will be able to buy a Good cookery book in the January sales.

I went to the post office this morning to get a reciept for proof of posting, but you have to get them weighed
first. It cost me £1.27

Hi Tinalives

Mmmm, I think this whole scenario has taught us all to be very careful about applying for "free gifts" in the future. ::)

I, for one, will not be sending for any similar offers due to all the hassle it's caused. It's just not worth the money, time and worry involved and it's not even as if the wok is superb quality ... I doubt if I'll be using mine much at all as it's just not big or robust enough for our household. ::)

When i offered to return the cards (which they let me keep) i mentioned that the reason was that i already had a load of the cards.
They were once given away a few years ago i think by tesco or asda, about the same time Jamie oliver/sainsbury started their cards.

The wok isn't anything to write home about! Used mine for the second time today and when Mr TM washed it, the non-stick started to come off!!!

However, I have a friend who applied for this offer a couple of years ago. She paid her £4.99 and then decided to cancel her order - put it in writing. They kept sending her the recipes, so she wrote to them and said that she had cancelled her order, had also spoken to them and that if they continued to send her recipes, that was OK but she would consider them free gifts as she WOULD NOT be paying for them. More arrived, they threatened her with court etc, she referred to her previous answer and threatened a solicitor's letter, and lo and behold - account cancelled, nothing to pay.

Oh, and her wok is still going strong after 2 years. Maybe I just got a bad one >:(

Have since checked on the imp website using my account number and it shows as cancelled. Perhap this mght be an idea to do once you think you have cancelled just to make sure at http://www.imponline.com/

Hi all

I did receive the wok, cards and spice, had to go through the ra-ra of cancelling with the woman telling me that I could have it for half price if I decided to keep it - told her no, I'd rather send it back - she said, in that case you can keep the lot (stroppily) and I shall cancel your order.

Never heard a peep from the company any more (I must have been lucky) and truly enjoying the use of my free wok!
