Hi,

I posted this in the 'shop, but don't drop' forum, but am posting it here again to see if I get a better response. Admin haven't moved the other one yet

I've just noticed a crack in the windscreen of my Peugot 106 (about 8 inches) first of all will the car pass the M.O.T with this? (Some how i doubt it).
This leads me on to my 2nd Q's where is the best place to buy fitted and installed windscreen. I don't think my insurance (3rd party Fire and theft) will cover it.
3rd question, do you think I can get the money reimbursed from the council if there isn't a loose chippings sign on the road that caused it?

Thanks

The crack may still give you an MOT pass, depending on where it is. Your screen has different 'zones' which are permitted to have larger/smaller areas of damage.

If it's way over the passenger side, you might be OK.

Check with your local independent used car dealer, ask him who is best for 'trade' fitting. You'll be surprised how much less than the freefone companies, it'll be - expect around £80ish.

& not much chance of the council footing the bill, unless the surface was really bad, no signs to make you aware & LOTS of claims, at the same time.

Hi pantsdr,

Welcome to MSE :)

I am going to move this over to the motoring and public transport board where you may get more replies.

Check your insurance, you may have windscreen cover. So may only cost you £50-60 with no loss of no claims. Some minor cracks and chips can be done free. Having just read again you may not have any cover then that was pretty stupid. Just ring all the freephone windscreen people, at least you get free quotes?

Found this link (http://www.chrystal.westwrap.co.uk/) for a place in essex, that will repair your windscreenthis (http://www.nationalwindscreens.co.uk/service/mot.htm) shows the "zones" that vansboy referred to ,

Just realised that if it is a crack rather than a chip you will probably not be able to get your windscreen repaired, sorry
