A friend told me you can have a train ticket refunded if you didn't use it... is this true?
Yes - as long as it's a 'normal' ticket and not a non-refundable one.
There is an admin fee of £10.

Only if it's before the date of travel and then there's a fee (~ £10) they may levy. That's assuming the ticket is refundable in the first place. :o

Full 'open' return can be refunded up to 28 days after ticket expired unused.
