View Full Version : Tyre losing pressure after only 2 1/2 months from new

The pressure loss is from 30psi down to 8psi in a week.
Are the people who fit the tyres under any sort of obligation to look at it for free?
Or is it just one of those really annoying things where it's considered a wear and tear component and I have to foot the bill for whatever repair that is required?
It's annoying really as I expect tyres to last a while, particularly a premium brand such as michelin. I haven't been kerbing it or anything, my mileage has been quite low, I regularly check the pressures, and assuming it is safe to do so avoid driving over glass etc.

it's probably a slow puncture (nail etc), or poss faulty valve, shouldn't cost much to repair, get it fixed before it blows at high speed.

Exactly the same applied to me with a new tyre, a slow pucture due to a nail. If you take it back to the suppliers they will examine it for free; it if can be repaired due to an embedded nail etc its only a few pounds.
The problem comes when its in an area that cannot be repaired, I think this is away from the main tread area then a replacement will be necessary. Hope it doesn't come to that but definitely dont continue to drive with it.

Either a puncture or leaking around the edge of the wheel.

Will get it checked out after my exam :O :) Won't be driving till after then anyway. Managed to pick up a set of 5 used alloys the same as on my car with some tyres for £51 on ebay, can't believe my luck. (Have 2 spare wheels but both are buckled). Just need to collect them.

You should get it pumped back up ASAP otherwise there'll be sidewall damage and you're looking at a new tyre.

Def don't drive around in it at 8psi, it will knacker the tyre.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I've never seen a car tyre as low as 8psi. Isn't atmospheric pressure about 14psi?

I didn't know this but i googled it and you're right - it's 14.7psi (according to the site i found)
As far as the tyre is concerned i think the way it works is that it's 8psi higher than atmospheric - the gauge is zeroed at 14 so that you can measure from zero.
I think then that a tyre at 30psi is, in actual fact, at 44psi.
Could be wrong but that's the way i'd assume it works.

Well it's just what a meter told me after I noticed the tyre looked very flat. :)

it means that your tyre still needs another 22psi to be properly inflated (assuming 30psi is the recommended pressure)

When a tyre pressure meter shows 8psi that means 8psi above atmospheric.

Don't drive it other than to get it inflated and then straight to a place than can fit it. IF you are caught driving on an underinflated tyre you CAN get 3 points... and a fine.
Put on the spare if you have one and hop along to the garage

Turned out to be leaking through the side of the rim. Cost £14.95 to sort. Not sure if that's good, I suppose it isn't much more than the cost of tyre fitting. I am guessing garages have fixed "puncture repair" prices but I thought it would be dependent on the problem and size of it. So maybe it is worth calling around and asking what they charge to sort things like this out?!
