Over the years I've had several large almagem fillings in my back teeth, plus a couple of white fillings in my front teeth. The other month I had a flouride treatment at the dentist (personally I wouldn't do it again as it tasted foul) anyway over the following weeks my almagam fillings have changed from being a dark silvery colour to being stained quite brown. The dentist says she can't understand it and despite a clean and polish the discolouration is still there.
Has anyone else encountered this?

Sounds like the surface of the fillings have reacted with the flouride compund.
I can't say I have ever prescribed a flouride treatment for an adult. What was the intended benefit of the fluoride treatment?
If the fillings are large, you may be able to solve the problem with crowns, which would be more likley to strengthen the teeth than a fluoride treatment. And would make them look more like teeth again.
Otherwise, it may be possible to remove the stain by properly polishing the fillings with proper amalgam polishing burs.
