Yes, they cant detect other things, besides your sight, glaucoma for example.

Yes, I think they can detect signs of diabetes too.

Definitely - an optician can tell a lot about your general health from your eyes.
They will look at the back of your eyes and be able to tell if you have any problems with your retina that you would not necessarily be aware of. They will also ensure that your peripheral vision is okay and that you don't have any blind spots. They will be able to tell you how healthy your macular is as well as pick up signs of diabetes, glaucoma and other elevated pressures, catarracts and more serious illnesses.
Everyone should have an eye check at least every two years. If you are 40 or over and have glaucoma in your family then you will get a free annual eye check.

Yes-def go and get them tested. As other people have already said-they can pick up on other health problems other then poor eye sight etc.

In my opinion, eyesight is so precious.............it's just not worth taking a risk with your vision and health...........so it's essential to have regular (every two years) eye tests.;)

Apart from anything else, our brains are wonderful at 'adapting' to things which happen gradually, so you could have a problem that you're just not aware of.

Yes. How do you know you don't have anything wrong with your eyes if you don't get them tested? I only knew I needed glasses cos I tried on someone else's and I could see loads better through them...
