When I need to buy medicine I know that you should buy the chemists "own-brand" or "generic" product rather than a branded product, eg, buying ibuprofen instead of Nurofen coz it's much much cheaper.
When I thought I was pregnant I bought the generic test-kits and they were £6/7 for 2 instead of £15-20 for the well-known brands.
It only recently dawned on me to see if this is the same for Calpol and I was utterly astonished    - I got a big bottle about twice the size of the Calpol one and it was 50p cheaper :T :T :T so that means I got 200ml for £2.25 instead of £5.50 for 2 bottles of Calpol :j :j :j so I'm very pleased with myself but just wish I'd thought of it 4yrs ago when my 1st child was born :o  :D

Galpharm do a brand which you can get in £ shops, Lidl, Home Bargains etc aswell. I NEVER buy big brand medication any more, same with hayfever stuff why pay £6 when you can pay under £1.
Also in our pharmacy they offer a service where you can get meds for kids without seeing a GP, anything like colds, hayfever, headlice etc etc they just fill a form out and ring through to the GP to OK it, then of course being on prescription don't have to pay.

Hi Mics_chick,
This is a brilliant moneysaving thread! Since reading Martin's article on Cheaper prescriptions and medications (http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/health/cheap-prescriptions) I've been asking for generic medications and saved a small fortune.
I'll move this thread over to the Health board to remind others that using generic brands can be so much cheaper.

Some kids only like calpol. Generic paracetamol has less sugar or none at all and doesn't taste as nice. Cheap but not as tasty :(

I was whinging in the local pharmacy about the full prescription price for a pack of 28 x 75mg aspirin and she said 'we sell a packet of 100 x 75mg aspirins for £1.50'. Although I get free prescriptions now, I still buy my aspirin over the counter. Makes me really angry when I see how the big pharmaceuticals rip up all off, and rip the NHS off too.
and incidentally, shopping for someone else last week, I bought them a box of 16 aspirin tablets x 300 mg for 14p!!

I've been buying Generic since well before my DD (age 12) was born. I lived 3 doors away from a Pharmacy and he started me off by telling me if there was a generic version available and if it was cheaper. Got me in the habit of asking so I never buy 'Brands'. DD never complained about having Paracetemaol Suspension instead of Calpol - ask the Pharacist for a syringe for babies (usually about 50p - but 'free' with overpriced baby Calpol:rolleyes: ) and then hold their nose and squirt in and they have no choice but to swallow!!
Prescriptions are free in Wales:T :T and my GP has always prescribed the Generic version of medicines if available. He has a book he checks.

Well I've always gone for the sugar-free version of Calpol anyway but my kids went right off it - don't know if they changed it or what
I bought some Disprol paracaetomol from Morrisons coz it was cheaper than Calpol (although nowhere near as cheap as chemists generic version) and it tasted of banana and they both gulped it down when we needed to give them some :D
