I visited my dentist just over 3 weeks ago and had 2 fillings. Once of which was very deep. The days following I had an achey jaw and the week after I started getting quite bad toothache. I decided to sit it out over the weekend and if it was no better go back to my dentist. It seemed to clear up so i put it down to starting to eat on that side where my fillings are and that it was just settling down. Yesterday I have started with toothache again and woke up with it in the early hours. Should it take this long to settle down? I'm going to ring the dentist tomorrow but not sure when they'll be able to fit me in as they're going on holiday shortly so are busy busy.

My sympathies!
I had a filling the same as you, actually I wasn't having any problem with this tooth but the dentist said I needed it sooooo. Anyway I had it filled and that started the problems I was then wracked (sp??) with pain - had it refilled but to no avail it was still giving me major jip. I eventually had a root canal filling and I still had one very sensitive tooth, my next move apart from bancrupcy was to have the bloomin' thing out but it has actually settled right down getting better as the weeks go by, it's still not 100% but loads better.

I wasn't having any problems with it either til they blooming well filled it! I am petrified of the dentist so I have been hoping it will settle but it's looking like another trip and another dent from my bank account :(
I can still taste a metally taste too so I'm wondering if the filling isn't right or I've managed to crack it although I didn't eat on it for a week. This has certainly taught me a lesson. I put the dentist off for 3 years as I'm a scardey cat :(

This can sometimes happen.
Completely symptomless teeth with problems, that start hurting only when they're treated.
Had it not been treated, it would have flared up one day - and probably one day soon.
Get back ASAP.

I've rung my dentist this morning and she's on her holidays for 2 weeks ARGH!! They have a locum for emergencies only but I've been advised to take it day by day and have made an appointment for 8 August, if I can last that long :( I'm lucky I guess it's not a severe pain more like a constant nagging ache. Ah well, paracetamol with breakfast for me.

Yes my Dentist said that. She said she'd hoped she'd got it in time too.
Is the metally taste normal? I had a look on the web and started to get a bit freaked out with the tales of mercury poisioning.... (doesn't take much for me to get freaked out though so stopped reading!)

The metallic taste is normal for a new filling.
Fresh metal will react slightly with the other metal in your mouth giving this taste. After a few days the filling forms an oxide layer over the top which isn't as conductive, and the taste stops.
Don't worry about the scares you see on the internet.
These sites fail to point out that you ingest more mercury, and in a more toxic form, from a portion of fish than you ever do from a mouthfull of fillings.

I had the same problem, the pain lasted for over a month I went back twice but he could see no problems , suddenly the pain eased and then vanished although I do find in cold weather, ice cream or hot drinks all effect my teeth so must be sensitive even though i use the sensitive tooth paste etc. Teeth are a problem coming whilst we have them and even having them out but my how the dentist has changed when i recall the school dentist the best ones i came across were the australians doing a short spell in our surgery.

It didn't seem too bad yesterday and I thought it was easing off but I've woke up this morning with pain again :( Seems to be in my crown above where I had the filling and in teeth near the filling. Wish I'd gone back before they went on holiday - another lesson not to put off the Dentist! Eeeek :(

It's always hard to localise a toothache accurately.
I would say you were as entitled as anybody to access their emergency locum.
Ring up and get in.

'm really scared of going to the dentist but my usual one puts me at ease. Silly as it is I'll wait it out til she gets back unless it starts keeping me awake.
32 years old and I'm getting more nervous as I get older!

If it is the start of an infection, the sooner you are on antibiotics, the better they will help it.
I would be very surprised if a locum did much more than either tell you it will be OK, or prescribe you antibiotics to take if it takes a turn for the worst.
Be a big brave girl!! You never know - he could be a really dishy George Clooney lookalike!! (Although that would mean there were two of us, and that's not likely!!)

Even the thought of a George Clooney lookalike wouldn't get me there! haha
It seemed to be going - didn't need any pain killers last weekend up until Wednesday this week and it's starting up again. My dentist is back on Monday although I haven't got an appointment I'm going to ring and ask if she'll just look at it.
I've found that it only hurts if I eat on that side and only half an hour or so later not whilst I am actually eating on it. I'm avoiding eating on that side and it seems to be doing the trick. I'm also finding that it's sore when I wake up too but I also seem to be clenching my jaw when I'm waking up for some reason. This morning it tastes metally too. The sooner I get to the dentist the better. I'm sick of moaning about it!! lol :D

I survived the dentist lol
It's actually been okay for the last couple of days but I went anyway. She checked it out and gave it a few taps and she thinks it may have been infected with an absess and has given me a prescription to cash in should it flair up again before my next appointment in early September.
I ate on it last night and it didn't bother it at all so fingers crossed it's fixed itself. :D
