Hello spaggy

I'll move your thread to the 'Health & Beauty' board, where it should get more responses.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=1009335#post1009335)) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com (abuse@moneysavingexpert.com).

Regards

yes and no

I've never burnt when using it but you do have to apply it to clean skin an hour or so before you go into the sun and I've not used it whilst swimming etc. It only blocks UVA so that you still tan.... ok in theory but still means you get skin damage. Personally I wouldn't use it on children for that reason I would only use a sunscreen with a good UVA and UVB filter in them. I don't know if the Piz Buin once a day one has a UVB filter in it or not but that might be a better alternative.

I tended to use when out and about for the day when I wouldn't remember to reapply but for sunbathing or being by the pool or on the beach I would always use a high factor ordinary sunscreen and reapply regularly. I've given up with P20 now as I don't like the fact it's not got the UVB protection.

I use it - and on my kids too. I believe the new bottles say it is effective after about 15 minutes unlike the older stuff which did take up to 90 minutes to become effective.

However, I have very sensitive skin and use it as a precautionary "base coat" so that I'm still getting some protection even if I don't reapply the normal stuff often enough. I also used it on the kids in the morning before they went to school on the basis that they were too young to reapply it themselves during the day and it was better than nothing (needless to say I've not had to use too much lately :D)

So - I am happy to use it on me or the kids as a base but it's not good enough (ie no UVB protection) for when I'm out in the sun proper.

I always use this stuff and it has always prevented me from burning with just one application 20 minutes before I go out on a morning - also it is waterproof so you don't have to reapply if you go for a dip either :)

The only thing I don't like about it is that it is like an oil so bit sloppy to apply.

My partner gets a rash and swells whenever he uses this though!

Boots now do an 'all day' sunscreen, which I've found good but not tested in extreme conditions ...

I swear by this stuff. I was a carrot top in my youth, and have very fair freckly skin that usually burns as soon as I look at the sun. I'm living in southern France now and often have to work outside in the sun. With the P20 I have yet to burn, it is very effective.

I'm currently using the 'old' P20 which does have the following drawbacks. It takes up to 90 mins to react with the skin and become totally effective. It reacts with sweat to form a brown stain that is more or less impossible to remove completly from light /white clothes and it does not stop UVA radiation. I therefore use a conventional factor 50 top-up after the P20 has set (when I remember and when I'm not covered in earth from the gardening)

I've just been onto the UK distributers site and it seems that the formulation for P20 has been changed this year to overcome most of these problems. It states that the new formula will protect agains UVA and UVB, be fully functioning in 15 mins and is now non-staining.

I would try it, especially the new one, it's certainly better than not applying anything and as it's non-greasy I've found that I can get my boys to use it. They usually baulk at having to apply conventional suntan lotions and creams as they don't like the feel. It seems expensive but it does last a long time as you only apply it once a day.

thanks for the info on the new formulation I may well go back to using it now as it really is great for those days when you're not really aware of being in the sun. It's also great for anyone who does sport.
