You can do the same thing with salt too, although it doesn't taste as nice as the sugar one!

Also, I read somewhere, (but not tried it), that you can make an exfoliant with porridge oats, by rubbing a handful over your face when its wet.

(Course, if you're doing it in the shower and are pushed for time in the morning, you could then eat the resulting porridge to save on breakfast time.. ;D)

I do this too but I used olive oil (I always have it in) and use it as an all over body exfoliate. Of course it does help if you have a shower to rinse in and not just a bath ::)

Olive oil and brown sugar make a lovely, lovely exfoliator for the body, including feet. Plus if you like you can add a few drops of essential oil...

Not really a good idea to exfoliate the face with sugar, its too harsh. Magnified many times, sugar has lots of jagged edges that can damage the skin tissue.

A very good alternative is to grind aduki beans and add a little water to make a paste. Rub this gently all over the face. Grinding the beans to a fine powder is what is called japanese wash grains. These are really expensive. The body shop used to sell them at £5 a pot!

When I do heavy gardening I always do olive oil and sugar on hands - a tip I read years ago (I think in Doctor's surgery when waiting!). I expect same effect on face for deep clean cleansing. Maybe putting on heavy conditioner after will componsate.

I use ground almonds in my cleanser.

I make a bit of oatmeal paste (with water only) and use that. :)

i've been doing this once a week since it was first posted, (can't believe its two years old!!) and my skin is iun the best condition its been in for years, maybe be careful if you have sensitive or broken skin, but i suffer from eczema, and it seems to stop my skin drying out,

Apparently bicarb is a good exfoliant too. You could mix it in with a bit of cream cleanser (face) of course!:)

Off topic a bit, but I use a paste mix of bicarb, salt and hydrogen peroxide every few days to brush my teeth. Gives them a nice deep cleanse. Followed by toothpaste to take the foul taste away. I read this in a book somewhere.

I wouldn't use baby oil either - it's scented mineral oil and will bring a lot of people out in spots or rashes or similar. Olive, sweet almond or any other vegetable carrier oil would be better!

You can use ground up soluble aspirin as an exfoliant too. One of the small soluble dispirin tablets, dissolved in a small amount of water and rubbed on the face makes a great exfoliant - it's the salicylic acid; great for spots and acne!

BODY EXFOLIANT RECIPE
After lots of money wasted on expensive body exfoliant products I decided to make my own. The simplest and cheapest recipe Ive found that leaves my skin really smooth is:

1/2 cup of Brown or White granulated sugar
1/4 cup of Table salt
Couple of large squirts of Shower gel just enough to make a paste but not too much! (Mint/tea tree Source works well!)

I dont bother measuring it and you get an idea of how much youll need when youve used it a few times... Another tip.... Shave legs after exfoliating otherwise the salt stings like hell and best to apply it in shower with wet skin but with out the shower running. Massage it in then wash off.
IF ANY ONE TRYS THIS PLEASE ME LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK... My mates think Im mad lol!

Hiya.

Granulated sugar is too harsh for the skin, especially if it is in anyway sensitive. Also remember that the skin should only be exfoliated once or twice (at the most) per week (if your skin is very oily you should actually exfoliate less or try using a less harsh product as this can actually exacerbate the problem - the skin will produce more sebum to protect itelf.). The best facial exfoliant is porridge oats, and they are really cheap, too. I haven't personally tried bicarb so can't vouch, but after using it for cleaning, I can't imagine it wouldn't work! Just be careful as it seems like it would be rather too good, lol. Milk, in a pinch, is also a very good gentle cleanser - just wipe on with cotton wool.

Baby oil, vaseline and products containing lanolin (like carmex - I had to wean myself off :() etc are not good to put on the skin. They are mineral oils and can block the pours, though vaseline is a useful barrier cream if you are going to be out and about in very wintry weather - it can be used, over normal moisturiser, to protect the skin.

Of course, granulated sugar is fine for the body, just don't be too rough with it :D

If I can come up with other ideas, I'll post again.

Oh, strawberries are good with their acid and papayas contain papain, an ingredient in my favourite product, origins (never a dull moment) scrub but are expensive so you would probably be better to buy a product  you can't win!

As someone has already said baby oil isn't a good thing to use on your face. Its very likely to give you spots and blackheads. Some could have a reaction to it especially if its perfumed.

A cheap and gentle facial scrub can be made using oatmeal. Just mix some oatmeal in your usual cleanser. You can buy a cheap cleanser from most places, boots, tesco, sainsburys etc etc. Most costing in the region of £1. This is what we used to when I did my beauty therapy training. Its also what is often used if you have a basic facial in a college training beauty salon.

The cheapest and easisest way to exfoliate the skin on your face and the one likely to do least damage is to rub your face with a clean, dry flannel! I think I read this in some of the literature produced by the Acne Support Group but I can't be sure.

I usually use a flannel to remove my face cleanser, but I usually dampen it first, will try a dry one tonight.
I also use olive oil with sugar to exfoliate, but after reading this, I'm going to try oatmeal as well.

I wouldn't recommend baby/mineral oil for facial skin - it's comodogenic so can cause spots and blockages. A great exfoliator for dry skin is a few spoonfulls of porridge oats in a muslin square rubbed over the face - the milky liquid is really soothing. Yogurt is also a great exfoliator - just paint it on like a mask, it 'eats' into dead skin cells. I'd say warmed honey is best for oily/spotty skin - it's antibacterial and nourishing.

Sugar or salt, mixed with olive oil, a bit of honey and milk, with lavender essential oil (or any oil you like really) is a great exfoliant!
