How do people afford them? There are people that use 1 or 2 taxis a day.
They have fantastic jobs which pay them loads of money ergo they can afford taxis.
Next Q?

She may get that ema (http://ema.direct.gov.uk/ema.html) though, but I feel she is being penalised because if it was me, I would walk that 1 mile and have all the money for lifes extras. £30 is maximum award assuming she gets the maximum amount, of which £8 per week will be taxi fare

I remember seeing somewhere that for alot of people it would actually be cheaper for them to get taxis everywhere than to pay for the car they own.
Typical car costs:
£810 before you've driven it anywhere or allowed for depreciation- from:
http://www.moneymatterstome.co.uk/7-Personal-life-choices/Sub1/Activity-BuyingACar.htm
depreciation and interest payments could easily be another £500.
so you're talking £1310 before you've paid for a drop of petrol to go anywhere, that's £25 a week.
If you don't use your car to get to work, it's quite possibly cheaper to simply take two or three taxis a week.

depreciation and interest payments could easily be another £500.
so you're talking £1310 before you've paid for a drop of petrol to go anywhere, that's £25 a week.
If you don't use your car to get to work, it's quite possibly cheaper to simply take two or three taxis a week.very interesting

When I have my own place I might well go out and be merry more often.

When you have your own place you wont be able to afford it - do it now while you're living at home.

My daughter used a taxi last week to get to 6 form (it was just for one day as she starts in September) she is unable to walk far, its about a mile away it cost £4.50 for 1 mile.
We now been told that as of September we will have to find £300 per annum and thats subsided by the county council.
My husband is a cab driver.
That £4.50 for one mile..........
About half of whats earned is profit, the first half goes towards the purchase of the car, the wear & tear on the car, the depreciation of the car, the tax on the car, the MOTing of the car, the cleaning of the car, the hire & reward insurance, the licencing of the car, the licencing of the driver, the fuel, ECT ECT ECT.
So that leaves £2.25 of your fare. Its not just the time your daughter spent in the car, its the time it too him to drive to your house to pick her up. So if that all took 20 minutes, you will see that its not that much really. £6.75 PH & then your tax & NI & accountant to pay.

You would need two rugs though, one to sit on and one to cover yourself up with if it is cold.

I remember seeing somewhere that for alot of people it would actually be cheaper for them to get taxis everywhere than to pay for the car they own.
Typical car costs:
£810 before you've driven it anywhere or allowed for depreciation- from:

I do this at the moment. Aside from the fact I hate driving, the costs of running a second car would outweigh what I spend in fares.
Taxis are far quicker than a train journey and so the cost of my time is also factored in.

At least with a car you can go where ever you want whenever you want, however, with a taxi you are fairly limited to where you can go.

Why? It's still a car isn't it? It's capable of going anywhere any other car goes.
Anyhoo, we all know you can drive your parents car, so this thread is irrelevent isn't it?

I wasn't saying £4.50 was the correct price for 1 mile.
The other poster said she had been charged £4.50 for one mile.
I was just explaining that its not £4.50 in the driver pocket.
Actually the minimum fare is usually £4-£5 (depending on where you live) & you can go up to 2 miles for that.

i used the cheapest firm known to man though, used them once cos they were new, cheap and turned up a few minutes late but were cheap and the car was clean and the driver friendly, used them ever since when i don't drive
