I'm looking to do a weekly commute from the south of england to Scotland starting during july; I'd appreciate any tips on how to find the cheapest travel, especially for train routes because I'm confused :confused:
I'll be working in Scotland Mon - Fri and trying to go back weekends, sometime it'll be my partner coming up to visit me.
England - nearest airport Southampton, nearest Rail - Havant / Petersfield area;
Scotland - nearest airport Edinburgh, nearest Rail - Markinch / Kirkcaldy /Glenrothes

All ideas and advice appreciated

TIA
Jill

Ring National Rail and ask for the prices of their advanced tickets. You'll get them ludicrously cheap if you book them now.

Cost isn't the only issue. You want to look at how long it'll take. A working day on a train or a few hours on a plane.

Personally I'd fly, regardless of how much extra it cost. If you don't you'll spend most of the weekend travelling.

That's what I'm beginning to think because there are so many different route options on trains (and lots of changes which made it difficult to figure out the best way to split it down to make it cheaper)

I've not flown in years - what's it like getting through airports with all the security these days? how long should I allow for it.
I'll have choice of Southampton, Gatwick or Heathrow though the latter look better for more flight options to Edinburgh.
I guess it scares me a bit to think about flying, so any practical advice appreciateed.

flybe.com run the Southampton/Edinburgh route

Since BA sold out most of their domestic routes to flybe the fares from Soton to GLA/EDI have risen substantially, Surprise, surprise.

Some years back I used to do Edinburgh to Eastleigh most weekends.
Fly EDI to LHR, RailAir coach LHR to Woking, train Woking to Eastleigh. Wasn't too bad a trip.

Also consider the London-Edinburgh sleeper trains (http://www.firstgroup.com/scotrail/content/caledoniansleeper/index.php), there is also direct London-Kirkcaldy which is runs earlier from London and later to London, too late to get to Havant / Petersfield by 9am.
