how best to pay?

Hi,
I'm going to be buying a car at the weekend (fingers crossed!) so a large sum of money.

I have to travel some distance to view the car so would prefer to wrap up the deal there and then.

I then have a problem - if I want the vehicle - how do I pay.

1) I'd rather not be carrying around a large amount of cash
2) - I can't do a BACS transfer, cheque or draft as that would mean a wait to clear and coming back to get the car which would mean an additional trip.
3) - I can't do a over the counter transfer with the seller present as he's with an online only bank.

What should I do?

Only other option I can think of is PayPal, you could pay with your debit card straight into their PayPal account but they would have to pay a fee which they would probably expect you to cover.

I'm afraid you need to carry cash or resign yourself to another trip to collect the car.

I think cash is the answer,having said that is it £500 or £20,000,be very careful,if its a private sale,i have heard of people turning up with large sums of money ,finding the car did not exist and being robbed.Don't go alone.No problem if its a dealer.

On the other hand i have bought and sold loads of cars with cash,you just need to be sure who you are dealing with.Or you could see if he would deliver it,people will do if they need a quick sale.

If you're going with a friend or partner, get them to sit somewhere public with the money, like McDonalds etc. Then when you've agreed a price call them up and tell them to come over.

the lad who is selling it, is a member of the local owners club for the car and is in regular contact helping others out on forums etc so I've spoken to him before about other issues and he seems pretty geniune..

The car "is" pretty expensive so think may put larger than normal deposit down on the thing to save me carrying more on the day...

You'd have to be mad to take paypal on something that someone is going to collect, for one it's going to cost you 4% and for 2 you'll be wide open to chargebacks and paypal disputes...
