Had a filling at 3.30pm, left the dentist feeling fine, just an ache really... went to the supermarket and about 4.45pm the pain hit me like a ton of bricks.. so much pain, ripped open a pack of nuofen straight off the shelf and gulped back.. have rang the dentist but no answer so will have to wait overnight. Nurofen haven't touched the pain at all, am in a mess with tears rolling down my face, OH has gone to get me some aspirin. What has gone wrong? anyone know?

so sorry to hear you are in pain. i too had a couple of fillings taken out and temps put in today and am feeling like i have been kicked in the jaw. you are not alone!
i will be watching the replies for you!
if the pain continues and gets worse i would ring nhs direct and see what they say.
was it a deep filling? maybe it could be touching the nerve? i'm sure toothsmith will have some better advice for you.

I dont think you should be in that much pain after a filling, just keep taking the pain killers and put a hot water bottle on your jaw, wish you well :)

I had a filling once, on a tooth, that wasn't hurting, after i was in so much pain, when i went back, the dentist took the nerve out of the tooth!!

Don't mix aspirin and nurofen as you could overdose, if you mix nurofen and parcetamol that is ok and normally does the trick.

Thanks everyone, I'm feeling so much better. OH came back with Paramol, I have no idea if I've overdosed but at the time I didn't care... all I know is that I'm pain free (for now?? ) I feel it could be a long night. In reply to the question of whether it was a deep filling then yes, I think it was.. the old filling came away over the last few weeks and I've had toothache (but nothing major) whilst waiting for my appointment. Nowt worse than toothache eh? :o will have to stop eating sweets.

and put a hot water bottle on your jaw,...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Never ever ever ever do this!

Never

EVER!

It may give mild relief in the VERY short term, but when the pain comes back it will be much worse.

If a pain is infective in origin,it will just incubate the bugs, and get them breeding 10 times faster than they usually would - which would completely wipe out the effect of any painkillers or antibiotics you'd been prescribed!

Never ever ever ever ever ever hold something warm against your face with a toothache.

If pain killers have calmed it down, chances are you'll be OK 'till you can get back to the dentist.

It often takes more painkiller to get rid of a pain than it does to keep it away, so now it's gone, take the tablets regularly, and don't let it come back before taking the next one.

The fact that painkillers have helped might mean it's not too serious - with BAD toothaches, very little touch them - It might just be an electrical reaction between different metals in your mouth, which calms down quite quickley.

I would ease off the painkillers tomorrow, and call your dentist if pain starts returning.

I already knew that about the hot water bottle but forgot to comment - I once did this when I had wisdom teeth pain and was pregnant - the dentist was horrified the following day that I'd spent the night with a hot water bottle held to my cheek :o

Thanks for your advice toothsmith, I was hoping you'd see this.. I'll take your advice and see what I'm like tomorrow, hoping like crazy that it's something minor and I won't have to have the nerve taken out like the chap above mentioned

Poor you ((hugs)). Reminds me of when i had a tooth out, the agony afterwards made me wish i hadnt had it taken out as the toothache before wasnt as bad as the new pain with no tooth!!
I did take way too many painkillers and nothing touched the pain i mean NOTHING and im sure when i was havent hot and cold sweats and palpatations that was down to the tablets, not nice! Please be very careful and get back to the dentist asap.
It turned out i had something called dry socket so the gum didnt heal and my whole face, neck, head, shoulders hurt worse than ANYTHING i swear the worst pain ever and thats after 3 children!!
Hope youre ok soon.

mix nurofen and parcetamol that is ok and normally does the trick

Boots pharmacy told me it was ok to alternate nurofen and paracetamol every 2 hours. but not to exceed so many in a 24 hour period.
