I've recently booked a holiday to the Maldives and, unfortunately for me, the resort transfer is via boat rather than seaplane (55 minutes).

I suffer really badly from travel sickness (but only on a boat, I'm fine in the air and in the car) and when we went on a catamaran trip in the Dominican Republic a few years ago I was really ill even though the sea was like a millpond and, even after got back to the hotel, I felt ill and was unable to eat dinner and just had to go to bed.

So today I've been to the GP to get some tablets to help ease/prevent symptoms. He's given me Cinnarizine. I would like to test out their effectiveness before getting on the boat in the Maldives but have no idea how to induce the symptoms, does anyone have any ideas.

Rollercoaster? Ferry ride? The last time I went on a boat was on the Sharpness Canal (Gloucester Docks) and that was smooth as a millpond too. I could barely walk by the time we docked, had to be helped off, looked as if I was drunk ... But I was having a lot of problems with my ears at the time!

Seriously, a very calm sea can make you iller than a rough one, and having something to DO often prevents you from feeling sick.

Hi Ms.

I can soooooooooooooo relate to your anxiety because I am a scuba diver and every time I get onto a boat I am as sick as a dog. The minute I hit the water I am okay. Get back up onto the boat to go to shore and thats me ... hurling again!!

Last year I booked a cruise in the Caribbean and the moment I paid for it, I was as anxious as anything... all I kept thinking about was getting sick. I wound myself up so much that i even thought of cancelling the holiday.
Didn't get sick.. didn't even feel like I wanted too.

We are going over to Europe on the ferry in August and I am hoping that having the distraction of my daughter will stop me from thinking about being ill.

From personal experience fast moving boats dont make me ill. It is when the boat is sitting on the water and the current is moving the boat back and for.

I would suggest taking the tablets and convincing yourself that they will work.
Good luck and most of all... ENJOY your holiday.

Oh the misery of motion sickness (I only have to watch a roller-coaster on telly!!!)

I'd go belt and braces and buy some of those wrist bands and use them along with your tablets.

PS I picked up a pair at Aldi last week for £2.99

Thanks for all your replies - MissBehaving, did u take any medication whilst in the Caribbean or did you just bite the bullet and it worked out okay.

I have got some wrist bands too, so hopefully one or the other will work.

I'm going to take a couple of tablets this week (the GP gave me 84 so I've got plenty). When I was pregnant with DS (over 20 years ago) I was prescribed some travel sickness medication by GP and they made me sick so I just want to check.

Thanks.

Ms, I did take the tablets with me, but I only took them once. We were going to dinner and the ship was rocking side to side.
I just kept talking to the people at the dinner table and made a point of not looking at my glass of water.

I just bought over the counter tablets.

My bf tried herbal tablets - completely useless. I went to Boots and asked for an anti-emetic - they gave me their own brand tablets, 2.49 - he was 100%.

I find also that if you've got one sickness free trip over you, you'll be less likely to be sick again - something about increasing the confidence!!
