Hi all,
My OH has just gone down with the Flu Bug that seems to be going around at the moment, typically just in time for the bank holiday weekend. Argh!!
Anyone else suffering, any magical tips to get him through it...Am thinking of tying Vicks First Defence, is it any good?
Thanks in advance..

The trick is to boost your immune system so you don't get colds/flu.
The sunshine superstar: study reveals Vitamin D as 'wonder vitamin' (http://www.independent.co.uk//eceRedirect?articleId=2447662&pubId=55)Half the women were given a 20-microgram dose of vitamin D, increased to 50 micrograms (2000 IU/day) after two years, and the other half were given a placebo. Those who took the genuine vitamin reported a 70 per cent reduction in colds and flu, from 30 episodes to nine over the three-year study.
The Antibiotic Vitamin Deficiency in vitamin D may predispose people to infection (http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/20061111/bob9.asp)
Epidemic Influenza And Vitamin D (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/medicalnews.php?newsid=51913)
Vitamin D Council | Understanding Vitamin D Cholecalciferol (http://www.vitamindcouncil.com/) have links to cheap sources of high strength Vitamin d3 Cholecalciferol. If you search that site for "Stoss" therapy you will learn how Vitamin d at high strength can be used to fight flu, but that is for later use as it needs to be taken at the very first sign of the infection.
Risk assessment for vitamin D -- Hathcock et al. 85 (1): 6 ... (http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/85/1/6) shows the safety of high strength Vit d3.
despite a lack of appetite, i find a good hot curry with plenty of chilli, vegetables, onions and garlic seems to help a lot. it seems to clear my sinuses and give my metabolism a bit of a kick. plus it'll be the only thing i can actually taste!
plus orange juice, as mentioned before.
paracetamol makes it more bearable too.
hope your OH gets well soon!

Plenty of fluids, pain relief if necessary, rest, whatever food he fancies and a doting OH should make a difference. Keep an eye on his temperature and confiscate his fags if he smokes. Lots of sympathy and understanding can also be effective if it's Man Flu rather than ordinary flu.

Hubby and I have both had this over the last 3 weeks.
He stuck with just ibuprofen evey 4 hrs and plenty of water, whereas I took 2 paracetamol and 2 ibuprofen every 4 hours and drank plenty of pepsi max :D
Oh and of course he had man flu but I just had a slight cold :rotfl:

I've just recovered from a nasty tummy bug I picked up in Dominican Republic which plagued me for 3 weeks. Immodium was no help and in the end I went to my quack who told me I'd need antibiotics and he's need a sample of the offending faeces in order to say which ones to use - ack!
Not being keen on chemicals, I opted for an alternative remedy instead. My pal who sells aloe vera stuff gave me some bee propolis tablets reputed to be "nature's antibiotic". I took 2 a day and after 3 days it had gone! I also supplemented my diet with lots of vitamin C, multivitamins, probiotic yoghourt, aloe vera juice and linseed oil to get me back to health.
Feeling great now! :D

I agree with brix, the strongest curry you can handle with lots and lots of chilli, keep up with the fluids and sweat it out in bed. I lived in japan for a while and they wash their hands and gargle every time they come inside etc. Seemed a bit strange at first but I've done it for two years and only had the flu for two days in all that time. Doing that will cut your chances of getting the damned thing by 1/3 as the most common way to catch he flu is from your hands and gargling clears your throat if anythings there. Just use salted water in the bathroom.
