car tax on larger engined cars

Been a bit out of touch with car tax changes etc lately as had the same vehicle for far too long, now looking to change cars. I know that all new larger engined vehicles the car tax can be up to £400 a year I think (what i heard the other day), is that right? I guess if you can afford a £60k Range Rover then you can afford to pay the highest road tax for it.
Are they planning on rolling it out to older cars anytime? There seems to be an abundance of 4 or 5 year old cars with large engines up for sale at good prices I just wondered if people are selling them off before the tax prices are rolled out to older cars too

iirc most of the tax changes or anything else to do with cars always apply to cars after 2001 .
large engine cars naturally depreciate anyway and im sure they will be less attractive due to higher tax - but paradoxically become even more bargains.
No one likes paying that amount for road tax but it makes sense if you cost it in to the price in comparison to a smaller car

IIRC the new really high tax is £300 this year rising to £400 next year but it only applies to cars registered from now onwards. Other cars will still be in the same catagories that have applied since 2001
