OH wants / needs ;) a new vehicle.
Presently running an Astra TD Estate but had real probs with engine management light coming on and subsequent loss of power. Fine on an open road but not when you need speed to overtake a tractor!
He would reeeeeeally like a 4-wheel drive - mainly because he has a dodgy hip and knee and finds getting in and out of normal cars difficult.
Budget of around £2 - £2.5k.:o
Anyone got any ideas?
Yeah, put the k2.5 toward getting the leg sorted and you won't need a new car.

buy a gun and shoot bellends like tony8.
Not sure what you'll be able to get in that price bracket though to be honest GhostDog.

Frontera ...
She'll be wanting another £2.5k for maintenance and repairs if she goes that route.

How often will you REALLY go off road?
Remember, a 4WD cars have twice the number of parts that can go wrong (2 or 3 differentials, multiple drive shafts etc.)
If you ask my advice, buy a normal car, and if you really fancy a 4WD, hire when you feel like driving one.
You don't need 4WD for high seating position. Try Suzuki WagonR, Vauxhall Agila, Hyundai Amica, Suzuki Ignis etc. You'll get all of them under £3k with decent mileage. However, these cars are not everyone's cup of tea though.

Afraid I have to strongly disagree with that comment ;) we have had our 10 year old Frontera for a few years now and it's only needed one repair,a thingame bob that regulates the throttle £99 including VAT :D nothing else :D it has been the most reliable car we have ever owned and intend to keep it for a while yet.

Get a Rav4....without a doubt the most reliable jeep. You can easily get one for under 2 grand. You can easily get one for UNDER a grand at auction.

Might I suggest something like a Fiat Doblo 1.9 JTD (NOT the non-Turbo) ... My wife & I bought one a few years ago for the same reasons (dodgy knees & hips), and it's been an excellent car and goes/handles MUCH better than it may appear to someone who's never driven one.
Lovely wide doors, nice & high & roomy seating position without the usual 4x4 roll, good for 105mph & 55mpg in standard trim, or 120+mph & 50mpg with a powerchip fitted.
Go & try a test drive at your local dealer ... You might be very pleasantly surprised.

A nice four wheel drive Lamboghini Gallardo would probably suit you but I doubt you'd find one in that price range ;)

Going back to your original post this sounds like the EGR valve, can normaly be fixed by giving the car a good thrashing or removing it and cleaning it, or even take it to a vaux dealer and ask them to upgrade the firmware apparently they have a work around in the firm ware that makes its redundant
