I've been a nail chewer forever and I was inspired by QVC OPI hour the other day to try to grow them (just to the end of my fingers) I often watch QVC but never ever buy anything!! Anyway they had something called nail envy on there, which i looked for on ebay and it still costs about a tenner. :(

I know if i spent a tenner i'd probably force myself not to chew lol But are there any ather ideas? I tried the nasty tasting stuff you paint on, years ago and i still chewed and so i ended up vomiting because i'd ingested too much of it!!
Any tips would be good thanks.

i found the most effective way to grow my nails was to get a fake set put on so I couldn't get to them. They looked very nice and when it was time to take them off, my own nails had grown underneath. Breaks the habit too :D

Good luck :)

Pure willpower did it for me !! After chewing for years, one day I just decided to grow them and now 7 years later I've still got them. I have lapsed occasionally if one has broken and had a chew but to be honest if you can get through a week or so the craving will go. Good luck and hope you have an easy time of it.

I had acrylics on for a couple of years until long nails became so normal for me that by the time that I grew my own the habit was well gone. I used OPI Nail Envy and Avoplex Oil to get them healthy and strong after the acrylics came off for good. I now use Nails Inc. hardener and cuticle oil.

Apparently the "in" thing with girlies is to have short nails at the moment?

For me it took willpower, I had a long look at my nail and told myself how ugly they looked all bitten down. I was ashamed to show my hand but now I have lovely nail.

The only thing which stops me biting my nails even now is keeping them very very smooth. I have an emery board in my purse, and in my desk drawer. As soon as I feel a rough bit, I have to smooth it down. I am sure I only started biting to get rid of 'rough' bits - brushed nylon nighties!

I tried the yukky no bite liquids ... Sally Hansen last time. It worked and my nails grew and were gorgeous for about 10 months, then I started reading such a good book and the nail biting started again.

If i wanted to grow mine I would have to stop reading unfortunately, or just read crap !!

Personally I don't bite mine if I have nail polish on them. But they still break lol.

Hello hello folks,

I must confess I am a nail biter but only due to laziness, my nails are weak and tear and rip, and as soon as I get them long they all tend to tear off to the quick all at once so for me it's easier to keep them short, however almond oil rubbed into the nail and the cuticle works miracles, it toughens them up no end, and it's dead cheap, try it putting it on a couple of times a week, you'll not believe the difference it makes!

Hope this helps

I love the OPI Nail Envy, Boots sell it, so could you use Boots points to buy it?. It is a fab product, but you must remember to follow the plan religiously to get the best effects. Getting artifical nails if a good option for letting them grow, but I find they can be quite weak after they come off and more prone to breaking.

Hi
My nails are weak & brittle too. I use false nails for 2 weeks. Instand of having them done at a salon I tend to buy Avon Instant Manicure. The nail underneath will grow back. I use them for occasions or for as long as I can get away wearing them.

How about eating a cube of jelly a day to build up strength in your nails?

Sally Hansen do a great range of nail strengtheners and I have always found them really effective. They are only about a fiver too.

Firstly, give them a good cut and file. Paint your nails with the nail strengthener then paint your nails with normal varnish. Make sure its a relatively bright colour. I find you always tend to be alot more careful with your nails when they are painted.

Repeat every few days (minus the cutting) but make sure you file them!!!! I can't stress that enough, it will help them grow into a nicer shape and will help ALOT with the spilitting.

I bought the OPI Nail Envy stuff from ebay last week as I was trying to grow my nails but they kept breaking. Im finding it really good so far. No breakages since Ive started using it. Think I got it for less than £9 so if it works its a bargain as its much cheaper than get false ones

I found the only way to stop biting my nails was to grow one at a time! As each one grows it gives you an idea of how nice they will all look and how useful they are! Definitely worked for me even though it sounds daft!

That's funny. It just goes to show that it's whatever works for each person!

How long does it take to grow a full two handfulls?

Thanks everyone! ive been and bought myself a sally hansen growth encouraging thing lol with my boots points and just some collection 2000 ridge filler and varnish in one. ive dug out an old file and ive put some coconut oil on there each night. (its the only oil i had in)

so far i've noticed my fingers drifting out of my mouth a few times so maybe im chewing subconsciously without realising it!! but they are looking better, not longer yet but better. I have reserved the left pinky for chewing but haven't gone there yet!

Im finding that if i slap on loads of hand cream then firstly they are a bit slimy and a dont put them near my face and seondly that they arent as dry and i dont feel like i need to chew all my skin off too!!
anyway thanks for your help, ill post a pic o my tallons in a few weeks lol

Wow, what a lucky bargain. If it was me I'd be tempted to put them on ebay.

I leave mine alone if they have nail polish on them. But I find that tends to make the nail underneath dry and more prone to peeling when I take the polish off. Base coat doesn't seem to help unfortunately. Then I have to pick of the peeling bits, they break and I'm back to square one! I also can't stand any roughness at all so have to carry an emery board in my handbag.

Anything that increases the blood flow to your fingertips is meant to speed up growth, eg typing, playing the piano, or drumming your fingers on the table - which may or may not annoy those around you more than the nail-biting!
