There are 3 pricing bands on the NHS now - £15.50, £42.50 and £189.

Yor local PCT is responsible for providing you with NHS treatment, so even if you are not with an NHS dentist you can still be given emergency treatment. Go here (http://www.nhs.uk/England/Dentists/NearestSearch.aspx) to find your nearest NHS dentist.

No. A friend of mine is 25 and just had a brace fitted. if its something you need to do then its best to get it done as my friend kept putting it off and the older you are then the longer you have to keep the brace.

I had a wisdom tooth removed by an NHS dentist a couple of years ago and though I can't remember how much it was I do recall being pleasantly surprised as it was fairly cheap - mine was quite easy to do.

What I will say though is do remember to take the time off work (book a sick day in advance). I walked out of the dentist down to my office, reported in sick for my shift later that day and then went home to bed. I was in agony for a couple of days but some good painkillers sorted that out!

Get it seen to sooner rather than later.

I had a wisdom tooth taken out at the dentists because I couldn't reach it to brush, and it had hardly any root on it, so it came out really easily. I'm posting this info just to reassure anyone who is afraid to go. I was a dentist avoider for years, following a bad experience as a child, but now I go every 6 months on the dot and have had no work needed for years!

I'm having mine done on wednesday, I have been in horrible pain for a week so it needs doing. Not looking forward to it though and no idea how much my non national health dentist is going to charge. Hope it goes well for you.

If it's straight forward to get out, or your dentist has an interest in oral surgery, then it could be done in practice and would cost you £42.40 on the NHS.

If the dentist doesn't fancy it, then he'd refer you to the oral surgery department of the local hospital, where, like other NHS stuff, it would be free.

You would still pay the dentist £15.50 for the examination that led to the referral though, and if any other treatment was required, you'd probably end up paying the £42.40 'Band 2' fee anyway. (That's NOT £42.40 on top of the £15.50 - it's £42.40 in total.)

26 is not too old to have a brace, but it would almost certainly be private and a rough guide for orthodontic treatment is about £2000 for a course of treatment.

The wisdom tooth is not 'pushing everything forward' though. One tooth cannot push a jawfull of teeth anywhere. There is a pressure sensation if the gum gets a bit inflamed around a wisdom tooth, but there is no power in that pressure. (If you think about it, if there is pressure going on between a single wisdom tooth and the 7 teeth firmly rooted in front of it, then it's the single wisdom tooth that is going to be pushed back, not the 7 teeth in front of it pushed forwards).

There is a process called 'mesial drift' that goes on throughout your life which does result in everybodies teeth moving forwards 3-4 mm throughout their life, but this is due to the way the biting forces interact with the teeth, and the fact that bone is constantly being broken down and replaced.

I strongly suspect that if your teeth are only a little bit out, then you will be recommended not to do anything about it - even privately. (Unless you are a movie star).

Dentists should always give you at least a guide to the fee that will be charged, and if they don't, you should ask.

Get shot of it ASAP. I had a big hole in my top right wisdom tooth and got an abcess when I was on holiday, I can only say the pain was indescribable (although the South Africans have some great voodoo horsepill antibiotics). Whatever the cost, getting rid of your wisdom tooth and not going through that will be the best £50 (or whatever) you ever spent.
And mine didn't hurt at all coming out, not even the anaesthetic, but the abcess had loosened it a bit, so I can't promise that!

Thanks all and toothsmith I thought I would need brace I assumed that my wisdom teeth where doing it.

I suspect I was be sent to the dental hospital as my tooth is growing out to my gum rather than down
I had surgery on my mouth a few years back and the surgeon did say at the time " I'll be seeing you soon for those wisdom teeth" Scared the life out of me as the pain from surgery was horrid!

Think I have been putting this off for ages but I have my apointment for next Tuesday wish me luck !

Hi have a look around locally to see if there is a Dental Hospital - they should do it free. Can't help you with NHS costs sorry, no dentist in my local area will do NHS work since the government changes  which is s**s law, as it's the first time in my life I'm entitled to free dentistry :-(

I second the post about a sickie!
Hada tooth out acouple of months ago & went to work later that day - felt fine but within 15 mins collapsed on the floor!
As previous posters have said cost of extraction not too much.
Good luck & take care.

I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to Toothsmith. Yet another reason why this site is just the tops :) Thank you for your informed and responsible advice and for being so generous with your time. I shall keep you updated by PM but in the meantime a huge public thank you accompanied by a huge healthy gummed smile :)

Now, I am off to find as much of your old post as possible so I can thank you until I reach the point of exhaustion :p

I guess you'll have already had the tooth removed by now then! Hope it went ok. Just in case you chickened out... My wisdom tooth was growing sideways out of my gum and I put off having it removed for ages despite the fact that my gum hurt and kept getting infected!!

I eventually had it done and it was just so easy I needn't have worried or suffered for so long. My dentist pulled it out. My dentist is private and I paid £50-00. Money well spent I think.

P.S I had paracetamol once and didn't need anything else. I felt better by the next day.
