Ok, i'm having a tooth refilled on 12th April & I said I wanted a white one (Just going on the look) is it best to go for white or silver? I want it white for looks alone, but if silver is best it can be silver. It's a tooth on the top, 3rd in I think. There's the wisdom tooth (I think) then another & then the one to be filled. He said it's a big hole & showed me on the tv screen.

Also, I assume he had a camera of some sort in my mouth cause he showed me on a screen, will he have it in when he fills the tooth? I'd love to watch it done! Will it be possible to watch the screen while it's filled? Though I guess he won't have the camera in & the screen was to the right of the chair, the tooths on the upper right & so I guess I wouldn't be in the right place to see it :!!

Sorry for the stupid q's, I didn't think to ask when he asked me if there were any q's! It's since reading bits on here that i've wondered about if silver or white is best. Thanks for any help

If it's big, white fillings don't last as long as amalgam (silver) ones.

White fillings are also a lot more technique sensitive than amalgam. That means that amalgam is pretty easy to work with, and it takes a lot to mess it up. White filling, if done very well by someone who is good at working with it, and who gives himself/herself lots of time can be very good. If it's rushed, and the steps to bond it too the tooth are not followed very well, it can fail very quickly.

If you are happy and confident with your dentist - go with his recommendation. He won't do it if he feels it won't work. There are also such options as porcelain inlays if it is too big for white filling, yet the look is still important, but these things are going to up the cost.

I can't make a proper recommendation as I can't see the hole that has to be filled.

As for getting it videoed (!) if it's a hand held camera, he would run out of hands if he was trying to do a filling as well, and you'd only be able to watch if your head lined up with the screen whilst he was working.

If the camera is mounted and the screen is in the right position, there's no reason why you shouldn't watch though. It's worth asking.

I didn't even know he'd used the camera till after when he showed me the filling. I can stick the end of my little finger in it, it's that size, nice image huh! I'd loveeeee to watch it done, I like watching anything done to me, I even watch em give me injections (Someone has to be nuts!) I'd get bored looking at the ceiling & trying not to gag. I haven't had a filling since this about 20yrs back, but i'm sure stuff is still wedged in every available place that'll make me gag badly. I'd take me book to read but don't think it'd work! (I even walk when reading, told you I was a nutter).

I can't see the tooth but I'd still want it white, guess i'll go with what he says though seeing as he's the expert (I hope!!) & not me lol

Do they still stab your gum with the anaesthetic needles or has that changed too? My Mum keeps saying oo you'll be ok but i'm not worried about having it done just having to sit still & not gag lol. I think i'm gonna take my days meds right before I go cause they act like a sedative & will help me to behave. I don't think I can stop talking long enough for him to fill it anyhow

I certainly don't.

I gently inject an appropriate amount of anaesthetic ensuring the comfort of the patient at all times!

There is a difference!!
