Hi all,

I have to admit something - I'm female and I snore LOUDLY. The OH is fine with it so long as he gets to sleep first, if not then he on occasion has gone into the spare room which neither of us like.

I can snore on my back like most people and on my side much to OH annoyance! I have tried more pillows, anti snoring spray, and most recently a steroid nasel spray from the doctor which guess what - doesnt work!

OH says that apparently I breath in and then hold my breath fr aa while before I breath out. Just before I get the good ol' powerful snoring I do a poofing noise rather like a whale blowing through its hole on top.

Does anyone have any ideas as this is costing me a fortune?

Some dentists make anti-snore appliances to wear at night.

I've only done about 3-4, but had good reports back.

Not completely silenced a couple of them, but certainly made it better.

The appliance looks quite cumbersome to me, but the wearers get used to it, and it restores marital harmony!!

It's important to be checked out for sleep apnoea though.

This is a condition that actually starves your brain of oxygen during the night. It can lead to very serious complications.

If the dental appliance works, it will cure the apnoea problem, but don't just soldier on with the snoring and not get checked out for this.

My boyfriend does annoying things at night like make puffing noises and giggles about a lot. So I can sympathise with your OH. The only problem is theres no spare room so it's the uncomforable sofa or a sleepless night. Once I could still hear him from the sofa so I slept on the kitchen floor because I was so tired.

Get onto a sleep study and try a CPAP mask

Are you tired during the day? Try this questionnare snoring and the holding breath thing could be an indicator of sleep apnoea (where you stop breathing in your sleep) if you score high on the Epworth scale you may have this condition and need treatment such as a CPAP machine, as mentioned above, see your GP Epworth Scale Questionnaire (http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/40002436/)

The breath holding does sound like sleep apnoea - my OH suffers with this but won't do anything about it (despite falling asleep on the settee most nights :() So I wear earplugs.....

My DH snores, he had an op on his throat a couple of years ago but it hasn't really helped. He can also fall asleep on the sofa at any time of the day or night which is really annoying LOL.

Sleep apnoea can be a very serious condition if your husband has it and is untreated Raksha he should not be driving and is putting himself at risk of strokes and heart attacks (and falling asleep at the wheel and doing goodness knows what damage)
Sorry don't mean to sound harsh just wondered if you were aware of the repercussions.
I've found this website helpful Sleep Apnoea Scotland (http://www.scottishsleepapnoea.co.uk/index.html).
