if the car starts in cold weather ok then there is nothing wrong with the glow plugs. Make no mistake you will know about it when they fail.

Be very careful as a car at that age you could end up with a service bill more than the cost of the car.
Get a quote beforehand and also look around your area remember independent garages are usually cheaper than main dealer.

Ask friends / colleagues for recommendations.

My garage checks and cleans them if they need it on a minor service, and replaces them on a full one - you would have to ask the garage what they do.

if you have a sevice book that came with car listing previous services it may say in there what they are "supposed" to do on each service.I am not sure "replace glowplugs" is a mileage item i think they are mostly changed when cold starting gets more difficult. On my diesel cars I have owned just changed them every few years when it takes more churning over to get the thing to fire up,its quite an easy job on many older cars not so easy on the newer ones where you have to take off a ton of plastic covers just to see the engine

I think glowplaugs are on condition i.e. they will change them when they fail, but not otherwise.

Badgergal - are you confusing glow plugs with spark plugs?

With a 14 year old car I think I would be doing the oil and filter, check brakes and bushes and not much else. You don't want to be spending much more than £30-£40 (I would be personally just do oil).

Probably! Whoops, sorry.
