Nearly two million people have signed a petition against road charging. It closes at midnight tonight. The Government have said they will rethink the plans if there's enough public support.

Blair said today he will listen to concerns before it's implemented.........which was a bit of a Freudian slip on his part.
Quite honestly, though, if it means a less congested M25, A21 and M20, then I'll happily pay it.:j
The congestion charge in London has made it much easier to travel, and charging seems to be the only way.

Thank you Morglin, I've long thought I was the only one who thought that this was a good idea!? Afraid I thoroughly agree with it and have already point blank refused to sign the petition when a freind shoved the link under my nose.

Me too. My friend keeps on at me to sign it. However, he is a road haulier and so obviously has a vested interest. Why on earth should I subsidise his use of the roads?

On the programme I watched about it last night, the rich bloke who drove 35,000 miles a year in his 4x4 was a massive 2000 pounds a year better off under road pricing, the single mother was just 100 pounds better off. The guy who was driving into the most congested area buit did 10000 miles a year would have had to paid around 680 more per year, that was based on the assumption that the government would knock a third off of the current fuel tax that we pay on petrol.
I've signed it, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
It's just YET another Labour tax, most hard working people will be worse off (as usual under Labour).. I've signed the petition

and me!
Both OH and I are self employed and need to drive to our customers. With the extra expense we would either go bust  or have to put our prices up......and the customer gets stung twice.
Same with the lorries, do you really think Tesco and Sainsburys etc will pay for the extra cost??? No, they put the prices up on the goods, so we all have to pay a lot more a) for the miles we drive and b)for the goods we buy - great

Not everyone will pay more for the miles they drive - I drive far less miles than any Tesco or Sainsbury's lorry so I will benefit there. I still think any increase in food prices will be lower than an overall tax of, say, 10% which is possibly what could happen if this scheme does not go ahead. THe Government will get the money somehow - a "pay as you use" scheme seems for more fair to me.

If the whole country had a public transport system equal to London or better then yes it would work.
Lets have the alternative first then the road pricing and then it will work.
All that will happen otherwise is people will just pay because they have no other option and the income will just disapear into the goverments black hole.

When the government get income from things they don't just keep it all for themselves (unlike the private companies who own and operate "public" transport). They spend it on what they believe (rightly or wrongly) is good for the country.
If they're short of money they'll get it, whether by charging to use the roads or putting 1p on Income Tax. At least the former gives us some element of choice.

I guess it's par for the course that the ignorant, petrolhead, keep-your-hands-off-my-money brigade can't even spell the word petition...

That's quite some lumping together there!
Considering that the OP spelt it correctly in the posting then it's probably a typo. But, of course, a single mistake proves beyone reasonable doubt that they are a petrolhead, neer do well, fine dodging, speedster, drink driving moron.
Maybe we could have a special forum on MSE for people like you.
