Free download HERE (http://www.skype.com/)

All you need to make free phone calls to other users across your broadband connection is a microphone attached to your pc!

Have heard of this before - are there any catches?

I don't think so, it's totally free if you use it to call someone else and they're on skype. It has got good reviews. It's worth a try at the very least.

I use Skype all the time to talk to my parents in Spain. It is a great way to talk to people for free. No money at all!

The good things about it are; the line is always clear, you can conference call and it is free.

The bad things; if you have a slow connection the line might cut in and out. You cannot yet do video-calling as you can on iChat (Macs) and AOL, but they are working on it. Skpye also gives you the ability to call land lines for a flat rate of 1.9c (euro) to most places in the world. This part of Skype works by buying credit from their website. I have head mixed results from this service.

Stick to just calling computers and you will have no problems.

So are you stating that the other person you are calling also has to have this Skype downloaded?

Yup, just the software and a mic/headset

Have a look at this thread on www.1899.co.uk VOIP - free calls without the need for a PC at the other end - you can call a telephone without charge (in certain countries).

Agreed much better, you can call landlines aswell, no need for the reveiver to have the same software.

Just had my first bill,
BT = £11 or so (incl line rental + odd call)
1899 = A whole £2.17

Total monthly bill Less than £14.

Used to be £45 - £65 with BT

Ive been using Skype for a number of months now, its something I have recommended to many people.
I use it to talk to someone in Barbados, its crystal clear sound, sometimes better than landline
I have a very cheap headset and its perfect sound.
Also very cheap rates to call landlines

It seems Skype is taking off big time, from what I gather its from the same people who made Kazaa, but I dont think no spyware will exist in Skype. Its making lots of money from them

Very rarely have I experienced cut outs, it does suffer though if you downloading something.

If you want video, u could use something like yahoo messenger with a webcam to see each other then speak using Skype

there is a another one come out recently. Ive signed up for it but yet to try it

typo

supposed to say,

its making lots of money from them

and regarding downloads, I use torrent s/w to download which eats a lot of bandwidth, which is why Skype suffers

I use Skype as well (well I try to!). Unlike others here, I find it to be terrible. There is a long delay of about 1 minute and frequent cut offs. It makes having a conversation practically impossible!
