Is there any way you can search who owns a car by their number plate ?.

I need info on a car i'm interested in, but I want to make sure the owner does own it and everything is legit first.

You used to be able to write to the DVLA with a fee of 2.50GBP, the vehicle registration number, full
reason for enquiry and relevant dates, but I'm not sure if you still can.

Check V5 for the registered keeper and if it's not the person selling make sure there's a good reason why with evidence.

Also, do a HPI check if it's a pricey car.

The DVLA will be the people that know who own the vehicle. Whilst you can pay a £2.50 fee to find the owner of a vehicle on a set date you must demonstrate an acceptable reason for needing the data and I suspect that simply because you want to buy it would not be considered reasonable enough.

Asking for the V5/ log book would be the normal course of action or asking them to get a duplicate before you exchange monies if they say they have lost it.

There are a fair number of companies that will also do a MIAFTA and HPI check on the car for you too to make sure there is no outstanding finance, or if the vehicle is recorded as stolen or written off. I dont know if these companies can also do a DVLA check or not?
