Don't know if these count as the sort of foods you are meaning, but anything with a very high sugar content keeps virtually indefinitely ie Jam- you can safely ignore the best before date. Also dried fruit as long as you kep it in full, airtight containers. Some high sugar foods improve with age eg christmas pudding, fruit cake.
Also vinegar!!

Shelf life of most pulses are pretty good and nothing drastic happens if they are exceeded.
If you go to an Indian/chinese cash and carry type outlet you should be able to find 1kg and bigger bags of lentils/chick peas/kidney beans/dahl etc in abundance with long dates that providing you have somewhere dry will store for well year or more. If you have stored them for long past their sell by date just soak them for a bit longer before you cook them.

Use cous cous as a substitute for potatoes and pasta.Actually Pasta and rice are pretty long dated usually. The wholewheat pasta in the larder now is best before 07/08.
my corn beef is 2010 and tuna in brine 2009, chickpeas 2009, evaporated milk 2009

Honey found in egyptian tombs was still edible 2000 years after being sealed in!
(So why does it have a 'sell by' date nowadays??)

Because people have come to expect one, othewise they think something is amiss - all the 'best before' dates are only advisory, you don't have to chuck the stuff out.
