Yes, there are normally two or three variations of flu a year. also after you have the flu jab its quite common to get the flu, sometimes its not worth having. Part of my degree is in microbiology and my lecturers are involved in making the vaccines and one of the refuses to have the jab as it gives him worse flu than just getting in normally.

Yes
The flu jab will be for the most common / serious strain in that year.
Unfortunately, this will not protect you from the other strains, but take heart that the potentially serious ones were stopped at the gate:)

In elderly individuals living in the community, vaccines were not significantly effective against influenza, influenza-like illness, or pneumonia.
"The effect of current vaccination programs on morbidity is insignificant, and that on mortality marginal."

maisy-maiDid your spend 10-20 minutes in the sunshine regularly at midday between April and September?
Have you been supplementing with Vitamin d at an effective strength since then?
If you don't ensure you body has adequate reserves of vitamin d it cannot protect you from infection nor can it fight that infection adequately.
If you are sensible you don't send your troops into battle without the equipment to do the job and you keep them properly supplied while in battle.

Ignore Ted.
If you are in a vulnerable group / want the jab anyway and have concerns or questions, it may be useful to have a chat with your practice nurse or another medically trained professional:)

..... do take multi vitsYou should be aware that the amount of vitamin d in most mutlivits is 100iu this is one FORTIETH of the amount your body uses every day. (http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/77/1/204)
If you want to keep your bank account out of the red and you know you have to spend the same £X every day, will paying in a fortieth of £X have much if any impact?

The flu jab is to vaccinate you against the previous years flu strains so you should (fingers crossed) already be naturally vaccinated against it :)

Sound advice!
You can get a mild (or sometimes not so mild) flu like illness after the flu jab. This is because the symptoms you feel when you get the flu are related to your body mobilising your immune system rather than the infection itself.
The Green Book (http://www.dh.gov.uk/assetRoot/04/14/13/39/04141339.pdf) is the Department of Health's document on vaccination in general (link is to the influenza section) and is the number one book referred to by Healthcare Professionals for things like this......and it's public domain.
