What do you mean by the term “new”? Is that brand new out of the showroom or new to you (i.e. you are the new owner but it is a used vehicle)?
If it is brand new, then the dealer should have registered it in order to get/allocate a registration mark and this will be the date of first registration shown on the V5 Registration Document. Often this will be a day or two before you drive it away.
If it is just new to you, then the date will be the date that you took ownership of the vehicle and both the seller and yourself should complete the appropriate sections' of the V5 and independently send them to the DVLA at Swansea.
See here ( http://direct.gov.uk/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/RegisteringAVehicle/RegisteringAVehicleArticles/fs/en?CONTENT_ID=4022310&chk=SDrLGc) for info.

Oh, the garage didn't do anything I don't think, he gave me one half to send to DVLA.
It's not a brand new car, it's just new to me.
Thanks for your help.
