European car rental

Hi. I'm sure this must come up regularly but I never get anywhere with the searches on these forums.

I'm looking for the best value (ie. cheap and reliable) car rental service for travelling across northern spain. Any suggestions?

I always use Europcar but be aware!! Get a quote for the dates and type of car you want as normal. THEN do exactly the same, but vary your Country of Residence and you will notice a vast difference in the price quoted. For example, I noted the price quoted for my trip to France in August. For me as a British resident, the price was in excess of 550 pounds (my pound sign doesn't work!) However, when I changed the Country of Residence to Italy and my Nationality as Italian, the price was 536 EUROS, which converted to about 358 pounds - a large saving of 200 pounds. I booked it as though I was Italian and got this price. I have done this for the last 3 years, and have never encountered any problems when collecting the car - even when presenting them with my British passport and driving licence.

I also e-mailed Europcar and they just mailed back saying it was a good price and to go for it! I took this as evidence in case they queried it, but have not needed it.
