View Full Version : Tips n hits needed
our car has finally decide it has had enough and will cost £1100 to fix so we have been looking for cars for sometime now as we have wanted to get a newish car for some time. getting peed of with paying a fortune each month just to keep the car on the rd, We have decided to go for the vectra.
went to see the car this morning it was £12995 decided not to speak to the sales guys there as i was not in the mood. went back about 5oclock today with the wife the car was now £10995.
went into speak to the sales team this time. was offered £1200 for 2 cars both tax and mot are up in the next 3days but they are willing to take both cars as they are.
so thats £10995 for the car
£1200 part ex
£500 deposit
makes £244 a month
ideally would like to sell both cars privatly but will cost a fortune to get them sorted to sell.
so i guess what am after are tips on getting money off and hopefully a cheaper amount each month i did ask what there best price for the car was they said it would be the £10995 as its only just been dropped.
they car is march 06 plate with only 4600 miles on the clock
all help very very welcome

maka I am guessing you will get a reply from someone who knows a lot more about cars then me (if it was my choice I would probably choose by colour alone!) but have you checked any of the online price guides for an estimate price for both the Vectra and your trade in?

http://www.whatcar.co.uk/valuations.aspx
When we bought our last car it was a few years old and we went armed with the recommended price which was good to start with for a negotiating tool. If the dealer won't lower the price perhaps you could negotiate free mats - MOT or servicing free etc.
I didn't know dealers would negotiate on the servicing etc until I was chatting to someone at a Honda dealership who told me they had free servicing for 5 years. Worth asking I guess?
For someone to comment, you would have to specify exactly which cars you are selling, and which model you are buying, the rate of interest, and over what period.
If that was for 5 years..
244 month x 5 years = 14640
Balance for Car = 9295
Interest = 5345 :eek:
A brand new New Vectra 1.8 16V Exclusive 5dr ( Air conditioning, CD player, Remote central locking, Cruise control, Electric windows, Electric mirrors, ABS brakes.
) costs about £10,995 from a main dealer, so if your car is lower spec than that, it's not a good deal.

I take it you've gone for a drive in it? Personally I think the new Vauxhalls have got the most annoying indicator controls on any car. A minor niggle and I'm sure somebody out there loves them but...
Cheers

yeah went for a spin all in all was very suprised i did really enjoy it but yes the indicators were odd push once for it to indercate for 3 secs or push twice for them to be on until you turn them off very strange.

We have Astras for work cars.
Complete split 50/50 I'd say to those who do and don't like the indicators. Personally, I like them. Nice touch for motorway driving :)

I'd check out Parkers to get some idea of what your existing cars are worth - without knowing the exact models I couldn't get accutare figures, but just taking a pot shot at a basic Polo model, it's worth 1200 part exchange on it's own.....
At this age and price, Dealers aren't really bothered about how long tax and mot is left, condition etc etc... They usually will just give you the 'book' price from their desk! - that's what they did with my wifes' S reg Rover 200.... Didn't even look at it! - they just bung them through the auction.
It will probably not benefit you by trading in both cars - a trade in is quite often a courtesy to you the customer - it's a hasstle for the dealer, but they do it to secure a deal - by trading in two cars, that's double the 'hasstle' for the dealer....
See what they'd offer you for one car alone, and then you can bung the other out privately cheaper that you might otherwise, and still make more money than by trading both in....
Also, do check out the web for Vectra prices - like a Mondeo, they suffer HEAVY depreciation in the first 12 months, but are excellent cars - nothing wrong with them.
The only reason for heavy depreciation is the large numbers of them around - bought mainly by rental companies etc.....
Hence there is a LARGE choice for the private buyer second hand, and we can reap the benefit of someone else taking the 30-40% depreciation in the first year!!!
DO NOT buy a Vectra or Mondeo NEW from a dealer!! - let someone else lose their money, and buy one 12-18 months old if you want a newish car.
After searching long and very very hard and printing off other quotes i have had and rock bottom book prices for my cars this is what i think i should do.
Go back in on tuesday give they sales guy what i have found on the net then tell him this id the deal i want
to buy the car for £9700 go in low to insult him but will go up to £10250 not telling him that though.
car to include sat nav 4 yrs free service,
min of £1500 part ex for both cars
full tank of fuel
then put my hand out and hope for the best.
i will also take both cars along with all doc's to show i want a deal today?
what do you all think of that? to pushy? not pushy enough? just the right amount of pushing? all feed back very very welcome good or bad
and happy new year to everyone@ moneysavingexpert.com
when is martin getting his knighthood?

Sounds good - you can't be too pushy with a salesman!! - you can never be more pushy than them!!
Stick with your first offer of 9700, and remember, if you say 'min of 1500 trade in' - that's what you'll get - he won't ever offer more!! - so long as you're happy with that - you know the condition of the cars...
You've given youself a lot of negotiable items in this deal, which is good - I'd stick fast to the 9700 price, and 1500 trade in - you've got lots of other variables to play with/trade off on - use these to secure the deal.
The salesman will want to feel he's also achieved something, and pushed you down a peg or two, as well as meeting his minimum revenue figures on the car...
For example, if the initial offer is no go, then perhaps offer to sacrifice the sat nav, or say only 2 years servicing....
Sat Nav will only cost you 100-200 pounds from the high street...
REMEMEBER - be prepared to stand your ground for a while, and endure any uncomfortable silences or negative vibes from him - YOU are in charge, and have the power to close the deal in a way you want - He's always going to be as nice a possible, and if not - you can always go elsewhere - there are plenty of other Vectra's out there!!!!
State your requirements, and be prepared to walk to the door if he says no - even leave - you will probably be surprised to get a call after he's thought it through and spoken to the 'sales manager' to authorise the deal!!
If this doesn't happen, this also gives you time to think what just happened, and do you want to go back and agree to a deal of slightly higher price??
It's YOUR money.....
