Hi guys,
I have a bit of trouble. I have recently obtained my grandmothers old car. Unfortunately we do not have the log book. The tax is to be renewed at the end of the month. So we do not have sufficient time to get a replacement log book before the tax is due to be paid. We cannot simply get my grandmother to tax the car because she is no longer insured and the insurance is in my name.
So can anyone tell me how we can tax the car!?

Contact the DVLA because as far as I'm aware you need the full logbook or new keepers supplement to be able to tax it.

That is what I am aware... but there must be a way around it because otherwise there is no way of avoiding a fine, even though we are doing everything possible!

For the tax dont you only need the certificate of insurance, and MOT certificate?

If you know the Document Reference number (unlikely I would think!) from the V5, then you can do it online at www.direct.gov.uk/taxdisc - as long as you also have a new type of MOT certificate. Don't know if you can phone up and get it off the DVLA.

Have you (or your Gran) got the renewal form for the tax? That plus the MOT certificate and insurance should be enough?

I am in Northern Ireland... to my knowledge you need the registration certificate, MOT and insurance.
The problem is that the car is registered to my gran (I only have the old style log book) yet insured in my name.

have you got hte bit that you detach when sending off for the new log book then?
I know it might be different in Eng and Wales but you should be able to ring them and spped it up - they could send you the reminder.
But actually in the past I've just picked up a form from the post office filled that in , taken in my insurace and mot certificate and paid it over the counter. I wonder why its different.

What documents have you got relating to the car? Can you not send the change of ownership form off. Even if the car is registered in one name but insured in another you should still be able to tax it - we have a couple of vehicles and the name on the insurance isnt the same as the name of the owner of the car

I havent got the 'detatchable' section, that is on the new certificate and I only have the old V5. That is where the problem lies because I need this form to tax the car given the change of ownership. Since a replacement could take up to 4 weeks, it may not be back in time. I will contact them tomorrow and see if I can speed it up by going into the belfast office.

I was actually wondering whether the registered owner and the name on the insurance had to be the same. If not then I should be able to do it ok....

The registered owner and name on insurance don't need to be the same. Just needs to be the current insurance certificate which covers this car. Probably a fairly common situation to be honest.

Ah that isnt so bad then.... I should just be able to take the old log book and the application for the new one and that should be dandy.
Thanks chaps
you can tax the vehicle, but you need to go to your DLVA office.
You must take the mot/insurance details.
You can not tax it at the post office.............

Just a seperate note, I'm sure your insurance will only be valid if your the registered owner and keeper of the car, without that logbook in your name your not, so just hope you don't have a crash or your not insured!

You may be able to tax over phone by calling 0870 850 4444 DVLA Vehicle Relicensing line.

You had me worried for a moment here... but if you are right, the terms of the policy (normally there to restrict) should free me. The insurance covers me on any car for which I am NOT the registered owner (with permission of course). So if the insurers were to get awkward and not pay out because I am not the registered owner, they would automatically be activating the second level of the insurance.
In any case, I cannot see any note of needing to be the registered owner, there is simply mention that the insurance pertains to the car in question.
Thanks
