My other half is working in Aylesbury a lot at the moment and his company is putting him up in a hotel near Wendover when he has 2 or more consecutive days there so he doesn't have to battle the M25 back to Croydon.

Last week I went up to stay with him and was horrified to find that a saver return to Aylesbury was £31.70! He's going to be there for 2 nights next week and would really love me to go up for one of them (I wouldn't mind either, it's a gorgeous hotel with a spa pool & gym!) but I need to get the travelling costs down.

So far the best I've come up with is:
Bus from outside my house in Croydon to Morden tube - 80p on Oyster
Tube from Morden (Zone 4) to Amersham (Zone D) - £3.20 on Oyster
Single from Amersham to Wendover - £3.80

Total = £7.80 each way, a saving of £16.10.

(I'm assuming that even though I pass through zone 1, because I'm not alighting there, I don't get charged for it - I may be wrong!)

Just goes to show that if you don't need the fastest way of getting there (this is going to add around an hour to the journey), you can make huge savings by taking the scenic routes.

If anyone knows a cheaper way of doing it, please share!!

You can get it cheaper by breaking it down:
Croydon - London: Standard Day Single £4.10
London - Marylebone: £1.50 (Oyster)
Marylebone - Wendover: Saver return £15.20
Total price for the return trip: £26.40

Ok, so it's not that much cheaper.

I think that's the cheapest way to be honest, but the Tube is £5.50.

A network railcard may be a good investment - £20 for a year & will get you 1/3 off tickets. You can use it to buy off-peak Zone 1 - D travelcards also after 10am, though I have a feeling only from National Rail/Underground stations - so you could use it at Amersham for example.
If you could use this then you can use the bus and tube to Marylebone, go to the ticket office there and get a ticket from Amersham - Wendover (or buy online) & then use the direct Marylebone - Wendover services without changing.

Still not a cheap/easy journey :o( - particulaly as you can get tickets from Birmingham - East Croydon for less!!
