How do you transfer no claims bonus?

Bit of a newb question but I've never transferred my insurance from my current provider (Tesco) to anyone else. 24th December I'll have 3 years no claims (touch wood!). Just wondering how you transfer this elsewhere. Do yo have to request a certificate of no claims and send this onto your new insurers? Do they give you a grace period to send this or do they need it before they start cover? Or do they just not pay out any insurance claims until it's proven you had the NCD? Basically I want to make sure everytihng is in place before renewal time!

Yes, you will need to get a letter/certificate from your current insurer stating your NCD level, although your new insurer may well do this for you. Churchill gave me an extended period of grace to prove mine. They were happy to do it themselves but unfortunately I was previously with a completely prattish company who kept certifying I had four years NCD when in fact is was more than 9. In the end, I got the insurer itself (I had used a broker previously) to send me the evidence. It really should be a simple matter though provided you aren't with a bunch of muppets at the moment.

When you get your renewal advice, it should state that your premium including x years NCB is £xxx which you can send to your new insurer as proof. You can't really do anything just yet, as you may have a bump in the next month!

I am currently with Tesco, and will *probably* be moving to the Prudential (unless Tesco can match £40/month and £100 cashback, which I doubt they will - I currently pay £60). Anyone have any experience in how they do things?

Otherwise I guess it's fairly safe to use the renewal advice letter and ask for a grace period to get a proper certificate, or ask them to sort it themselves?
