I have had some bad news - a car that I had for a while, bought to sell on was caught on the road whilst on SORN - this could only have been whilst it was infront of my house when I was working on it as it was kept behind out houses on private land at other times - it had no starter motor or alty for the period I had it. It was on SORN for upto 3 months.
The previous owner had received a letter, of which I do not know the contents. I have given them my details today and will now be watching the post.
I have had a google and it seems that the maximum punishment I could get is upto a £5,000 fine and 2 years in prison.
Oh ****. :(

Hi,
I think they make you back date the tax normally to the date it was last taxed.....
Good Luck

Did you register the car in your name? You said previous owner had a letter?
Do you have a registration certificate for the car in your name?

Make sure it is your car they saw, it's common for the ANPR cameras to misread sometimes, and equally likely an office employee misread. Just another line of thought... :)

If this is your 1st offence, you'll probably be made an offer to backdate the tax.
The prisons are at bursting point (in news last week) so I think your place (cell)
is reserved for a real criminal rather than a tax crime (government money grab).

Whats the problem? You had it out ready to go down to an MOT test centre didn't you? Then something happened and you had to cancel the MOT and put the car back away ;)

Hi,
Matter will be dealt with by fixed penalty usually, worst case fine plus back tax.
However I would have found out details of letter before doing anything.
Who knows, it could it could have been a genuine error.
There has been enough reported .

Has no-one told you? We ARE the real criminals. That's why we're hounded for relative misdemeanors that the government can tax fine us for when the real crims run around unworried by police etc.

TBH I would ask for the photographic evidence so you can confirm whether this was your vehicle or not.

I agree with piggeh.
Dont forget that you have a lousy memory too.
No crime against that .
and only admit it if you have no further choice.
Good luck.
Btw I flicked my dog-end out of the window in Essex so perhaps we'll be nextdoor to one another in the Scrubbs.:)

You are lucky they didn't lift the car. Locally to me the DVLA have purges and go out with PCSO and they lift untaxed cars on the road. You then have to pay the tax (back dated) plus towing fees and a fixed penalty.
Had to laugh at young chap who went into Police station to say his car had been stolen. The police informed him it was now in a pound as the road tax was 6 months out of date.

Hopefully not, But hopefully I can pass on a bit of info that may ber moneysaving. In our borough there is a clamp down on litter and £50 on spot fines are issues. They inc thorwing cig ends out of car windows as litter and they don't need to appraoch you just take your car details.

Then how do they know who it was?
I think people take such fines as if they have no choice. I think half of the time it is disputable and wouldnt get very far if you kept contesting it.

apart from the car reg (and it can only be the driver) you have to say if it a man/woman aprrox age and description of the driver. Thet time/date/location of incident what was dropped and hoe ie thrown out of driver window by man ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Just recently I have started seeing lot of untaxed cars clamped by DVLA.
Yesterday saw untaxed car clamped on a bus stop, on busy shopping street.
How thoughtful of the DVLA (money grabbing chancellor) !!
