I had three extractions yesterday (molars) very uncomfortable. Two of the extractions have resulted in roots being left in, I am going back for 3 more extractions on Monday and they plan to try and get them out then. My lower jaw feels very swollen and bruised.
I am worried that any healing that takes place between now and then will be undone when they start poking about again. Surly the should have finished the job the first time? (I think they were pushed for time as it took so long)
Also its painful and uncomfortable to eat on my right where I've had the teeth removed, when I have them removed on the left it will be impossible for days. I am concerned that my lack of teeth will mean its really hard to bite and chew untill they have moved into a better position with the use of my brace (to be fitted next month) which could take years.
I'm so misreble :(
Please advise!

I know you're waiting for a response from a dentist but I just wanted to make a suggestion.
Are you trying to eat normal food right now? Why not try soup or something else that doesn't need chewing? It will keep hunger at bay and not be so painful when eating.
Follow the instructions your dentist gave, regarding taking painkillers and hopefully you'll have a good nights sleep.
Hope you're soon feeling better.

Having teeth out can be uncomfortable for a few days afterwards. Particularly if the extractions were difficult.
It won't really have healed much by the time you go again, so nothing much will be 'undone', and at least they can get you in again quickly.
Time pressures were probably why they didn't finish it. Other patients really can get shirty if things overrun too far - as is often evident on other dental threads on here. Plus, as things go on, patients become more nervous, and pain thresholds go right down, and even though the anaesthetic is still working, they start 'feeling' everything.
It's often better to give up and try another day when everybody is prepared and fresh.
as for the bit about how it will all feel over the months to come, there's no way of knowing unless I saw you, and even if I had, everybody is different.
I would guess that you will adapt to it fine, and not really notice after a little while.

Thank you for the advice both of you.
Nile, I just had soup yesterday and no hot drinks, today I've just had toast and thats not been too bad as long as I take small bites and keep it away from my gaps. I'm just worried that once I have gaps on the other side too it will be harder. I have bought lots of yoghurts and ready brek to sustain me for the next few days!
Toothsmith, I was quite tense and had to have my head held as the lower molar especially was a nightmare to get out, its not surprising I feel bruised and sore now but when the pain killers kick it it feels okay. My teeth feel so strange now, I have a molar with a gap either side at the top and it feels sensitive so I don't want to chew on it.
I suppose I will get use to it, its just hard to imagine every being able to eat normally again.
But I need to have this done and hopefully it will be worth it. My dad has had dental problems, a bridge, crowns and a denture and is looking at having two implants. I really don't want that. Hopefully in 3 years or so I'll have a normal set of straighter teeth and no gaps and they will all be my own teeth! I really can't wait for that.
Thank you again.

By the way, my othodontist said my teeth would feel loose after my brace had been put on, then I read that it was because the filiments holing them to the jaw would be broken. This sounds horrific, is it true? If so, how do they do it? :S

Hi Sarah , I just wonder if I got entirely the wrong end of the stick, you say you are having several teeth extracted but then say 'no gaps and they will all be my own teeth', so am I to surmise that with the brace all the gaps will be filled by your existing teeth?
Sorry if this seems like a dumb question I am just confused :rotfl: Don't take much nowadays :T

Thats the plan, I have had the extractions but my existing teeth will be moved around so that I have no gaps when the treatments finished.
This means drilling into my back teeth and having them brought forward on a slider thingy over 2/3 years, having a tooth coming through the roof of my mouth manipulated into position after removing the baby tooth and another very small tooth to accomodate it.
Looking at my mouth now it seems its impossible that it can happen. I'm 32 so progress will be slow but I hope, worth it.
