It's only a tiny chip, about the size of a pea.
Also, my MOT is due in a few weeks, could it fail due to that?

It will only fail if the chip is obstructing your view (so on the driver's side, or in the middle of the screenn). Mine has a chip near the bottom on the passenger side, and it passed no problems. :)

Yes - most certainly.
The chip will most likely grow to a crack, and get bigger and bigger (it has happened to me).
Could fail the MOT if it's in your line of vision (not 100% sure on that though)
Also worth noting that if you have fully comp insurance, most policies include chip repair free. May be worth checking out.

Also, if the vehicle was to be declared a total loss due to an accident the insurance company would deduct the best part of what it costs to replace the complete windscreen and not take into consideration the fact it is free/ excess only if you were to claim for it under a comp motor policy

Generally it is best to get it repaired to prevent further damage occurring. See here (http://www.ukmot.com/6-1.asp) for more info.

In a car owned by my partner a few years back there was a long-term chip in the windscreen - it was on the driver's side but quite low down.
One garage passed it; then the next year a different garage insisted on a new windscreeen although the chip had not changed (that second garage ripped him off in general though.)
If it's borderline, why not go to one of the non-garage government test centres I saw mentioned on this board?

as above, check your policy, you can most likely get them to repair it for free using their approved 'windscreen' people. Doesn't calss as a claim or affect your NCD

Have now rung the insurers, who have arranged for autoglass to come and repair it free of charge. Doesn't affect NCD. Thanks for everybody's replies.

Sorry to bump this old thread.
Yesterday I got a chip on my windscreen, just off centre(towards the passenger side and I am wondering if I should get it fixed.
The chip is only the size of a pinhead, but feeling the chip from the outside it has penetrated the first layer....looks like some sort of plastic film has come away.
My insurance company will repair it free of charge but don't want the guy fixing it to travel miles and say that it doesn't need to be fixed!
Any advice welcome! Cheers

Phone your nearest Autoglass. It's their job and it needs fixing. Easy.

I'm sure I've read that all of them get you to sign a disclaimer that the screen may crack and need replacing during repair, and sure I've read a suggestion that some companies will intentionally try to get it to crack as they make more money fitting a windscreen.

I've never had to sign a disclaimer but if it's not repaired, it may crack anyway.

I have fully comp insurance with More Than, they have a Glass helpline, so I will give them a ring tonight. I hope what you are saying above is not true! I will need an OEM ford screen as the screen itself has some sort of element across it.

The repair company could simply tell you that it's beyond repair if they wanted. Who are we to disagree with them?
I got mine repaired at home by Autoglass on a leased car.
Haven't heard a peep since I sent the car back.

I just got off the phone to Autoglass and they are gonna ring me back tomorrow to arrange a visit. I told the guy on the phone about the chip being very small and he said that its best to get it checked as it could develop into a larger crack esp with winter coming up.
Even if it doesnt need fixing, AG will bill the insurance company for the callout and it wont cost me a penny.

I had one of these repaired it was in line of sight and the workshop assured me the repair would be invisible.
I was disapointed with the repair, it was very obvious and right in front of my eyes!
It may have saved the integrity of the screen but was not pretty, I complained and the whole screen was changed.
