Does anyone know of how to get cheaper rail tickets (than advertised on trainline etc). Any promotions on at the moment I haven't heard about? I need to get from Newcastle to Aberdeen in August but don't fancy driving and the only flights seem to be BA (£120+).
Thanks :P

I got on the old 'dog and phone' and spoke directly to GNER; result - £28 return. It just shows that the net is not always cheapest!
Can anyone help with any trainline or First Great Western discount codes/vouchers please????

I regularly travel from Birmingham to Newcastle and use qjump to purchase tickets.
Use the site to try several dates and times - you can get better deals if you travel off-peak.

theres a thread in the grab it while u can forum, detailing the free rail travel vouchers that were published in the evening standard, earlier in the week:
http://forum.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Urgents;action=display;num=10915267 20
from info in that thread it seems that its ok to print out downloaded versions of the vouchers, so no need to worry if u missed out on buying a copy of the standard :)

Cheapest way of doing it (without codes) is go via from St Pancras and change at Sheffield. That costs £31 and I think you can book up to 3 days in advance (although it may be 7.)
I did see a reference somewhere here to a midland mainline promotion between sheffield and london, so you may be able to do it cheaper.

Hi there,
I regularly travel by train and have made it my New Year's resolution to get to work for less. I'm going to start buying my train tickets in advance through thetrainline.com via greasypalm to get some cashback but wondered if anyone had any promotional codes for them? I've tried one I found on this site (1GBPOFF) but it didn't work. Any help would be really appreciated!

It depends if you are really doing it on the cheap.
www.thetrainline.com to book tickets VIRGIN now use this Db, you can see the similarities.
Select return fares then at the top of the page with the return prices on, select single fares.
Here you will see VIRGIN Value 1st single tickets.
14 day £27
7 day £36
3 day £44
Get the right trains and you can go Preston to London 1st class return (buying 2 single tickets) for £54. Only available weekdays. Go to the VIRGIN trains WEB site to see what you get in 1st class for your £27. Also you get access to the 1st class lounge at Euston to freshen up and have a shower. The showers are free and towels are provided (links below).

I work in the rail industry. In theory, whether you book on the net or at a station or on the phone, the price at any one time should always be the same. The industry is ruled by something called the 'Ticketing and Settlement Agreement' which stipulates everyone should have access to the same fare, no matter how they book. Operators can discount a ticket e.g. £1 off to book on a website, but they have to settle-up to the central clearing house ('RSP') for the full value of the ticket, i.e. they take the 'hit' out of their retail commission. So the Train Companies are effectively barred from doing an Easyjet type of Internet-only (the most cost-effective selling medium) availability, other than for temporary promotions. In short, the £28 ticket should have been available at the same time from any main rail station, or internet, or by phone.
Hope this sheds a bit of light on a murky subject!

I am waiting to purchase return train tickets to Liverpool Lime Street and the nice man at thetrainline.com told me to wait until the actual train journey had been confirmed by Network Rail
In other words I am looking to gofrom Essex in October and a saver return is £60.90 but if I wait until the journeys are confirmed, whatever that means, then the single tickets will be available at £16.00 each way, a saving of £28.90
hope this helps

J's D
It means that the cheapest tickets, for which you must reserve a seat from a limited number of seats, can only be booked when those trains are opened-up in the reservations system. This is only done when the exact departure times are know, which is notified to Train Companies by Network Rail around 10 weeks ahead - sometimes less when there is weekend engineering work.
There was a big hoo-ha a few months ago over NR's inability to confirm train times for weekend travel until a few days beforehand, but I understand this has now got much better and it is mostly done 10 weeks ahead.
The more expensive tickets are not 'compulsory reservation' and can therefore be booked without having to reserve a seat on a particular train, so do not have to wait until that train has been opened for reservations.
Hope this helps

It is a bit early yet to gt the cheap advance purchase tickets. Not usually avaiolabke until about 2 months before journey date..
Your problem is that your travel is over the Christmas Holiday period and everyone wil want cheap travel so you will need to jkeep checking the site to make sure that the tickets have not been released. Also, There are bound to be track works etc. Until Network Rail notify the Train Operating Companies (TOC) whether they are taking possession of sections of track the TOC's will not be able to release tickets as they will not be aware of whether they will be running services on certain routes. This caused major problems previously when Network Rail left everything untyil about two weeks before the holiday concerned (cannot recall whether was easter or last Christmas). The only thing that ahs chaged is the the big TOC's (inc Virgin and GNER) have altered the way they say advace tickets and they should dtill be avialable whenever they are released. previously the 14 and 21 day Advance Purchase tickets were lost due to networ Rail's tradiness in notifying.
Keeping looking and good luck.

5OFFBIZ still works if you have a trainline business account - doesn't seem to be a minimum spend either

08-10-2005, 5:49 PM
£5 off all business rail travel booked during September:
1) Register details on www.thetrainline.com/business
2) Enter the promotional code 5OFFBIZ every time you book online (or quote when calling)
Note: You have to spend over £20 per booking and the offer ends 30th of September.
Hope this helps the business guys out there!
1) This has been extended to 31st Oct.
2) There now seems to be no minimum spend.
3) It doesn't have to be business travel. Well, technically you do, but anyone can do it as you need to open up a business account - easily done by making up a company's name and listing their HQ as your address.
4) £5 is deducted from all of the ticket range - CDRs, Virgin Value, RailCards etc. - but not Tube inclusive tickets.

There are no promotion codes for any train travel around at the moment.
However, there are some Virgin Value Fares between Manchester and London on your dates, from £12 each way. However as you are travelling peak times (Friday evening - I presume - and Sunday), there are very few of these tickets.

Virgin Advanced fares are not availiable from Wrexham and so this is why the standard single from here is £61. However, from Crewe the fare can be as low as £20 if you book in advance - without using any RailCards or promo codes. Also, the journey time seems to be 1 1/2 hrs less from Crewe as it involves only 1 connection ~ where this ticket includes rail to Watford Junction and then the RailAir Bus direct to Heathrow.

Make sure you have clicked on the Singles Tab and make sure you are booking in advance. You will also find that there will be more £6 fares during late morning and early afternoon and at night on weekdays, most of the day on Saturdays and very few on Sundays. For example - taking a random date (28th March) for all direct Midland Mainline trains from Sheffield and London it is £6 and First Class is £10. Remember you still get free tea and coffee in Standard Class.

I want to travel Cardiff to London, by first class if possible, on 28th July returning the next day. There are three adults and one child (14). We have a junior railcard between us, if that helps.
Are there any deals at all?
I used the Daily Mail offer last time - great value :D
Hi Folks,
I wonder if anyone can help me. I regularly travel on business by train between Bristol Parkway and London (Paddington.) First Great Western is the sole operator on this route. Nine times out of ten I have to catch trains during 'Peak Time' (7:30am to 9:30am) and pay the 'Standard Open Return' fare of £112.
My question is: does anyone know of how I can save any money on this route? I use www.thetrainline.com to book my tickets as far in advance of my journey as possible but there are very rarely any discounts for Peak Time travel. For example, today I looked for a ticket for travel during August but there are no discounts during the time I have to travel. I use the Discount Code 'NOMOREDIY' to save myself a few £ but no amount of any significance. First Great Western provide no discounts in terms of Railcards, etc.
Any info/advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Folks,
I wonder if anyone can help me.
Thanks.
Would it be worth your getting a season ticket?
The only other thing that I can think of is that National Express Coaches do a very frequent service to central London that is bookable and very much cheaper than the train - can be as low as £5 each way, depending on availability.

I want to travel Cardiff to London, by first class if possible, on 28th July returning the next day. There are three adults and one child (14). We have a junior railcard between us, if that helps.
Are there any deals at all?
I used the Daily Mail offer last time - great value :D
There are 1st class Apex tickets available for those journeys (leave 9 ish return next day 5 ish)
The First Great Western site has offers for things to do when you get to London but I haven't been able to find any special deals for the journey itself. Sorry!

Have a read of the second paragraph 'Exeter Central to London' on:

Buying a standard 'saver' ticket for an adult and two children would cost £124.40. However, if you hold a Family Railcard (£20) and buy your tickets at www.thetrainline.co.uk using the promotion code "NOMOREDIY" your tickets would cost £61.65 together.
Have tried this on a journey from Southampton to London. Does it only work with railcards?

For the 5 off 20 you have to have each ticket be 20 pounds, not your total :( I'm trying to book 2x £12 tickets and was hoping to get £5 off, but it won't discount anything.

I'm trying to find the cheapest way to travel to London (Tower of London for a birthday treat) -myself & 3 children off peak on a Monday in mid July. I haven't got a family travelcard, & am unlikely to use one again, but it looks as though it might be just worthwhile.
Does anyone have any codes, or has anyone spotted any offers for cheap rail travel with kids?
I'd be very grateful (& the kids might even get an icecream after their sandwiches if I can get the price down!). Shame the BOGOF offer for the Tower is only with adult tickets, so 2 of the tiddlers will have to pay.
Thnaks for any help!!

Westbury to London Paddington
Outward Journey on Monday, July 17, 2006
Depart 08:58, Arrive 11:19
1 Changes @ Bath
London Waterloo to Westbury
Return Journey on Monday, July 17, 2006
Depart 21:20, Arrive 23:27
1 Changes @ Sailsbury
SUPER ADVANCE RETURN Adult Fare 1 £19.90 (1 adult @ £19.90 )
SUPER ADVANCE RETURN Child Fare 3 £29.85 (3 children @ £9.95 )
Total Fare £49.75
With a Family Railcard that would bring the total down to - £24.55 - if my maths is correct as National Rail Enquires has stopped working. I will have a look if I can better the times as it does seem rather a long day.
Personally, I would fork out the £20 for the RailCard and buy a Cheap Day Return for the 4 of you (£30.80) - and use the 09.39 from Westbury direct to Paddington and returning at 19.20.
The summer holidays are fast approaching so it may give you opportunity to visit other places with your little ones. Perhaps Sailsbury (£6.30 for all 4) or Bath (£9). Have a good time in London!

Hi everyone!
Anyone, please, with cheapest way to travel from Bury St Edmunds to Berkhamsted on Saturday 01/07/06. I believe via Kings Cross might be the least troublesome, but will stand corrected!! Would also like to upgrade to first class if not much more (weekend first perhaps??!!).
I need to be in Berkhamsted by about 1100hrs, and will be leaving around 1700hrs on the same day.
Would Network Railcard be of any use? Or else, any promo codes worth using?

Yes - you will need to go from Bury St. Edmunds to Kings Cross (changing if needed at Cambridge) and then you will need to tube it between Kings Cross & Euston - and from there to Berhamsted. A Saver Return is £31.60. Buying this ticket would mean a Network Railcard will not be valid for any discounts.
However.. between Cambridge and Berkhamsted (via Kings Cross/Euston) it is and this portion will cost £15.10. With a standard cheap day return from Bury St. Edmunds to Cambridge this would cost £7.70. Total Cost - £22.80.
I don't think the Network RailCard would give any discounts on First Class - and as this journey involves 3 different train companies - upgrading to First Class for an extra £10 per sector is probably not worth it.

Hi
If you go on www.megatrain.com you can travel from Edinburgh to Manchester for £17.00 for all 7 people on 7.20 from Edinburgh Waverley, arriving 11.13 at Manchester Piccadily. Then it will cost £40.20 in single fares from Manchester to Euston with family railcard, 11.45 arriving 14.03.
Back will cost £40.20 single fares leaving 14.35, arriving 16.46 Manchester.
There is then a bit of a wait until 17.58 arriving Edinburgh 21.32. Cost will be £17.00 on Tuesday 1st and £27.00 on Monday 31st using Megatrain as above
Hope this helps you

Hi again
I travelled with megatrain on Wednesday with South West trains and there was one carriage for megatrain customers and the seating is unreserved so it pays you to get there 15 mins before the train leaves. I had heard that Virgin does not have a specific megatrain carriage but don't worry, as long as you have the booking ref, they are happy.

Looks like Warr- Man £5:25 single then Man-Glasgow on Megatrain for £5 on the 14th, or £3/£5 on the 21st, then a single back from Glasgow straight to Warington for £15:50 . You will need to book these in advance, as soon as possible, as they will go up or sell out nearer to the time, not the Warrington-Manchester bit but the other sectors.

Doesnt seem to be much about for that weekend, start of the football season, guess thtas why your off to Burnley. Managed to save £5 off your price but means leaving London at 0725 to Sheffield,(£6) then Sheffield to Burnley via Leeds £16:85 return, then Burnley to Leeds then Leeds London £9:50 but a lot of hassle and changing for a fiver so probably not worth it.

Best i can do is Driff to Sheffield £18.85 retuen and then Mid mainline Sheff to london £10.20 return. Total £29.05 for me and dd.
I know there are many experts around so please try to find a cheaper one for me please as i am on a really tight budget for this trip.

If you enter your journey details as a return trip it will show a saver return price of £300 for your group of 5, if you click the "click here for single fares" you will see a range of single fares from £60 each way, £12 each. There doesnt seem to be many £12 singles to Glasgow, although the 11:55 is available at the moment, the next price group is £16:50 and there are more trains to choose from at this price, the return trip has plenty of availability at £12.
The disadvantage of 2 singles is that you must travel on the train you book so no flexibility and you have to book them as soon as you can as they will probably go up nearer the time.

Do it as 2 seperate journeys, open 2 browser windows to make sure both parts are available. I have been checking fares at GNER, HERE, (http://www.gner.co.uk/GNER).
You have to book early to get the best fares to/from London but always worth checking GNER to/from P'boro or Grantham as there are sometimes cheap fares to/from these when the ones to/from London have sold out. Pboro-London is £28 return so added to a couple of £10 singles from the North East isnt too bad.
Loads of tips on here re splitting journeys, I normally use nationalrail.co.uk but it is playing up today.

I need to get 2 adults and a child Watford-Stockport (but couldbook London-Manchester and get on and off at those stops if cheaper) - on Sat 2 Dec, coming back Sun 3rd Dec. at any time - but although lots of cheap fares on the Saturday, can't find anything cheap to return on the Sunday. Cheapest total fare is about £55 per adult for a return - no cheap singles for the Sunday - even if bought family railcard, cheapest fares are about £86 total - (plus cost of railcard at £20). So over £100 total!
Does anyone have any ideas on cheaper fares? Has to be train as travelling with lots of small children. As it's quite a long time away, are fares likely to get any cheaper if leave it or not? Do they release any fares nearer the time or have I already missed that?
Thank you!

Hi
Does anybody know the cheapest way of getting to Glasgow from Liverpool the 16th Dec?
Thanks
If you can travel on a weekday, it will only cost you £1 from Glasgow to Manchester by booking in advance on www.megatrain.com and then onto Liverpool Lime St on a standard ticket for a further £8.10. Alternativly for travel on 16/12 you will need to buy a Virgin Value Advance ticket for £15 - however these have not yet been released.

Erm.... the title of this thread is "Any train promotion codes out there?" Iloveafreebie was asking if there is any train promotion codes for his/her journey. How exactly is that OT? I suggest you let the BGs for this board decide whether something is OT or not. Or are you volunteering? :D

I 've tried and tried to see if I can get a cheap return from Derby to Portsmouth, but I can't. It costs around £43 with a YP. I've tried splitting the ticket up but it still works out more expensive.
I know I should book in advance but so far I've not known when I'm going down to do this. Anyway, if anyway can think of a cheaper way to do this then I would be grateful if you could give me some tips.

Code in the Western Mail is Trains, however you'd need to buy the paper to get the 3 vouchers as you have to show them when you travel. I think the code from Gemini Radio or the other radio station involved would qualify you without the need for vouchers but I don't know what it is......

You need the code to be able to book the promo tickets here (http://http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/GreatSave.aspx), bookings can only be made online and if you book through the newspaper offer you will need to show the vouchers from the paper with your ticket, similar to the Daily Mail promo earlier in the year

Thanks for that!! Me and the missus took advantage of that last year, and bought loads of daily mails.
HOWEVER... the ticket inspectors never once asked to see the vouchers and so never took any of them off us! I had the same wad of vouchers at the end of the offer! Use that information how you will! ;)
Also, the cheap first class tickets entitle you to a free meal and complimentary (alcoholic...hic) drinks  as well as a nice comfy environment EXCEPT on Sundays when it's basically not worth the extra cost cos you just get tea/coffee/water and biscuits.

If I've read the T&C right it sounds like this is for a single ticket. However as it covers up to 4 people presumably one of those other people can have the vouchers and use them to get you all a single back. Or am I missing something?

I'm reading the T&Cs, and see this :
"3 differently numbered tokens collected from the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday during the promotion allows up to 4 passengers to travel on the promotional fares but passengers must travel together in both directions. There is a maximum of 8 passengers per booking and a maximum of 2 sets of tokens can be used per booking."
"In both directions" kinda implies return. Maybe you need 6 tokens for a return? Who knows.

It said in the paper that the GNER link is only active from tomorrow (2nd Feb).
I'm searching for journeys from Cambridge or London to Edinburgh on the 25th or 26th March... no luck with Virgin so far!
Well they have just one on the Sunday which involves a 9 hour journey including going by bus from Carlisle! The site seems quite temperamental, sometimes returning results and other times saying there were no promotional tickets found... lets see if GNER are any better tomorrow.

I did use a promo code but don't know if this made any difference to the price. The prices depend on your time of travel as you didn't specify any particular times.
Hi, I've been researching the Daily Mail thing all night. Basically you need a fresh set of tickets for each journey, that's each way too. Many people have pointed out that last year the conductors weren't really checking.
First of all, you can buy tickets anytime from today, thats the 2nd of Feb, up to 31st of March. Different rail companies ask you to book in advance, from one night before, to 7 days before, depending on which company you use.
This can all be found, along with further information : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/prmts/prmts.html?in_article_id=432788&in_page_id=1777
I don't buy the Mail, it's a nasty paper. So here's the plan:
I've gone on a "trial" for daily mail online, and simply copied the images of the tokens and saved them.
So what you can do now, as I have done, is go for a virgin train first class for £7.50 under one set of tokens, if you're unlucky they'll stamp these, but you can print off as many sets as you like, so who cares, and if you have a connection, simply do the same again, or if they dont have first class, opt for the £2.50 single.
I've uploaded all the images and coupons that you may need, and you can get all this here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/14493248/Daily_Mail_Offer.rar.html
So simply print your own coupons with the tokens and voucher in there, hop over to the train companies site, book your trains, first class for a tenner, and enjoy a free meal and alcohol, maybe make a connection, use another coupon if necessary, and a fresh set if you are doing a return journey.
Enjoy,
Morf.

The offer is with ScotRail, and it's 50% off tickets (Excludes Season Ticket, Flexipass, Rovers etc, but it good for Advance Purchase tickets.) booked up until 10th February. To be able to get the discount, you need to be a member of their loyalty scheme, Advance. Details of the loyalty scheme can be found at hxxp://www.firstgroup.com/scotrail/advance/
Details of how to become an Advance member can be found at hxxp://www.firstgroup.com/scotrail/advance/howcanijoin.php
Hopes this helps someone out.
That's good, but what's the promotion code? When I click through the link it doesn't show the 50% discount automatically. I have a feeling you need a promo code as well.

I've collected my 3 Daily Mail tokens & been online on www.virgin.com/trains/dailymail but once I'd read the 'Terms & Conditions' I clicked onto the red 'Buy Your Tickets' & all I got was a choice of Value Tickets or Standard Tickets. A value return ticket from Wigan NW to Glasgow Central is (£12 + £16)ie. £28.00. There is no option to buy tickets at the special fare of £10.00 return. I seem to remember that this problem happened during the first few days of the promotion last year.
Anyone else had problems with the Virgin Trains/Daily Mail promotion tonight?

You are looking too early Mike. Firstly, the train timetables change around the end of May to a summer timetable. Secondly, Virgin are notorious for not allowing tickets to be bought 3 months early. In my experience with Virgin Trains booking, 14 day advance tickets are quite often only released 15 or 16 days before departure, giving the punter very little time to purchase!

Many thanks for that! I refuse to buy the Daily Mail on principle, no matter what they are giving away, so didn't have any tokens.
[
Enjoy,
Morf.

Link does work - need RAR converter - get WinRar from download.com (free)
For "one railway" use: http://www.onerailway.com/templates/Generic.aspx?id=2561
For "Virgin" link use: http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/dailymail/
Got £30 return to London to Norwich 1st class - thanks!
Has anyone experienced problems by printing out the tokens and sticking them on, as they're not printed on newspaper paper and are actually on regular computer copier paper? I just worry that I'll flash my coupon and the guard will throw me off the train somewhere in the Midlands!!

Is anyone able to suggest a cheaper option than a standard saver return for the following journey:
Milton Keynes Central to Leicester (& return)
Leaving 24th March 10am-ish, returning 25th March 13.00
2 adults, one with a YP Railcard = almost £43. Anything less would be most gratefully received.
Cheers.

I have a young persons rail card, but are there any offers I can take advantage of.

You could try megatrain HERE, (http://www.megatrain.com/) only 3 trains a day from Manchester-Glasgow but usually available for £1 each way add a cheap return Liv-Man £13ish.
Megatrain is only accepting bookings until 1st April at the moment, so you will have to check them in a couple of weeks

Hi All,
Well, I am on the Virgin train to Edinburgh writing this! £5 Each way from Crewe!
The guard just checked my tickets and didn't ask for the coupons so.... so far so good :o)
I have the return journey on Monday to make yet though, will report what that's like when and if I get home!
Many thanks to lemontart for uploading the vouchers, cheers.

Can anyone help with Liverpool - London? I'd be wanting to arrive anytime before 1 pm Sat 19th May and leave anytime Sun 20th from 1 pm. Any suggestions for split-ticketing would be gratefully welcomed :) I know it's a bit too early to check May now so I've been trying weekends in April. Thanks!
Once the Value Advance Fares are released it would be £12.50 each way from Liverpool to London

If I have read it correctly, Morf downloaded the tokens and forms from the Daily Mail website, therefore they are expecting you to print them? If that is the case, do they need printing in colour or doesn't it matter?
Many thanks
