Hi there
This is my first post although i have been reading this site for a few years now.
I will be staying in Edinburgh on the 6 Jan until 11 Jan 08.As i dont really want to travel by car i was hoping to find a good value train ticket.I have looked on various rail company websites after they all say to book early for great discounts.I dont know if its just me but i cant seem to find any of these "London to Edinburgh for only £28" deals.
I was hoping to someone could give me a few tips as how to get a good deal.
I want to travel from either Derby or Chesterfield to Edinburgh Waverley station.Any time from either station for 2 adults with possibly 1 or 0 changes.
Is it better to wait until nearer the time to see if the prices get cheaper or try to book now?
hope anyone can help

If you are travelling from Derby or Chesterfield to Edinburgh most of the cheap tickets are not yet released - Cross Country Trains will be releasing about a month's worth of tickets on 24 October for travel after 8 December (or so their web site said a few days ago - the date has now vanished...). How far into January they will go then is not clear - maybe a further wait??
So yes - wait. If you book now you'll get the full fare - which you would pay on the day at the station.
The GNER fares (which will involve at least one change) may be available now.

Hiya
Also a newbie but need some advice. I want to go to London in Jan 08. Travelling out to London on Tues 22nd Jan from Manchester Piccadilly and returning on Friday 25th Jan 08 for 2 adults.
I have tried to look at the various train websites but it says that those dates aren't available yet.
Does anyone have a rough idea of how much it will cost, which website is best to use and it there are any discount codes I can use?
Trying to keep it as cheap as possible as it is a surprise trip for my husbands 50th. :D
Thanks
Rachel :)

If you get the right tickets, a total of £50 return for the pair of you - £12.50 per single journey.
(You can actually do it a bit cheaper by travelling via Sheffield rather than on a through train, but it's a bit of a drag and only worth it if the direct cheap tickets have gone or you are totally skint)
Unless anyone has a special offer, all the websites are much of a muchness. If you are paying by credit card, avoid thetrainline as they charge - the others don't. Or you can buy them at a station - they are not exclusively online.

If you go onto any Sainsbury's stores in Scotland, you should be able to get a voucher that allows you to travel anywhere in Scotland for £15 with your shopping (there is no minimum spend). You need to go to Sainsbury's before Nov 7th.

For some reason Royal Bank of Scotland decided to send me a copy of 'Sense' magazine, full of advertorial about their unexciting financial services. However I did spot a few offers that might be of interest here...

The Virgin trains website and Milton Keynes station are your best bets. No point in using GNER on this journey. Singles start at £17.50 each way if you book sufficiently far in advance. A saver return is £88 - no need to book in advance, just some peak hour restrictions.
Or try National Express - takes about 7 hours but £32 return booked in advance

I need to get from Newcastle to Huntingdon( via Peterborough) on 22 November. The £5.00 special offer tickets with GNER finish tofday, not that this applied to this route, it's £36.00 per person single( only need single) is this the best I can get or is this the normal price anyway? So should I book today or leave it till nearer the time?

The 7:27 to Birmingham New Street has £13.50 tickets available as I type, add a £2:90 from New Street to Birmingham Int and here you go £20ish better off. You must book this ticket as soon as possible and must travel on that train.

That's a cheap advance fare - but there seem to be some at £29 that day so look for those.
It MAY be cheaper to rebook at Peterborough - worth a check
Don't wait though - book as soon as you can

me and OH want to go from Hull to Manchester on the evening of 16/11 returning evening of 17/11. the cheapest I can find is £39 each. can anyone help?
also, what is the 'TPE STANDARD ADVANCE B' ticket? I can get this cheaper but don't understand what it is, is it a return?
Well a saver return is £31.50 each - no evening restrictions that I can see and valid on any train without pre-booking.
The TPE fare is a return, has to be booked in advance and will only be valid on the trains booked. If you click on the fare type it tells you this.

dzug: Well I think you were right. I get emails at work as I often travel by train for work, some of the links would not work today and even the cheapest for 2 of us was the tickets at £72.00 plus each. Checked out some older GNER emails and the early trains( which we need)were still available@ £72.00 for 2 of us one way still seems a lot compared to deals some people have got but we have to be there so I have payed it.

Cross Country trains, who you will use for much of the journey, haven't released cheap fares for that period yet. £26 single is the cheapest current fare - what will be on offer I've no idea.
Incidentally, that £80 is a remarkably good fare - are you sure about it? £117 is the cheapest I can find currently on offer.

Could anyone help me find cheap fares From Birmingham to Norwich on the 13th of January. Cheapeast i can find is £41.
Thanks
Where did you find that £41 fare? As far as I can see it doesn't exist. Nothing between £47.10 and £24 that I can see.
Try splitting the journey - you MAY get it cheaper that way
There are cheaper fares listed (from £17 single) but no availability that I can see on 13 January. Given that it's Cross Country I'm not sure that they've got their act together and released them yet - they were very late with the Christmas period

I have tried splitting the journey and it works out to be around £14. I guess you are right then that maybe the value fares have not been released. Thanks for your help. The £41 fare i found was on the nationalrail website.

Hi,
Don't know if anyone can help but I'm wanting to go from Derby to London (2 People) on December 28th, returning on 30th. The cheapest I've been able to find is 48 pound each (34 one way and 14 back). Would I be better going to the station to buy the tickets( my sister swears this is cheaper!)?
cheers

ps does anyone know why the outward journey is approx 2 hours but the return is nearly 4??!

There are some £28 ones down to London but not until 13:34. The fares you quote are for 2 people not each. Buying them before you travel will be cheaper than at the station, you can buy them until 6 p.m. the night before but best to get them as soon as possible, as they do sell out of cheaper fares.
The reason for the longer return journey time, is probably due to engineering works, if you click the journey time, or show details button it shows you will have to catch a replacement bus service from London-Luton.
You can go to the station to buy advance purchase fares at the same prices as on line - no more, no less. Whether they book from the same allocation or not I've no idea. If it's separate it could run out earlier - or later - and thus give different fares.
From 2 January you will also have the choice of Megatrain - starts just too late for you

Sound advice, as always Dzug, I had assumed howskint's sister had meant it would be cheaper to just turn up on the day of travel, didn't think of going there beforehand.... D'oh !!

This is a long thread, and I'm new here; so apologies if this has been posted before:
The first train of the day from GOBOWEN (0646), via the above stations to Euston has a saver fare of £50 standard return with no restrictions.
The journey departs Shrewsbury at 0712, Birmingham 0830, Coventry 0850.
Even from Coventry the open return fare is £102.
And of course, the £50 from Gobowen can be used on any train back.
iwant2keepmycash
13-12-2007, 12:38 PM
First train of the day from GOBOWEN is 05h39; connecting at Chester (depart 06h30) and Crewe (depart 07h05). Calls at Stafford (07h26) and Nuneaton (07h49) arriving Euston 08h58.
Unrestricted saver fare from Gobowen £58.80, which is 90 pence cheaper than the better-known Shotton fare.
The open return from Nuneaton is £102 - no savers at the early times.
You can also think about travelling from stations north of Crewe. For example, the open return Liverpool to Euston is £205. The 06h27 London train travels through Crewe, departing there at 07h05 (it's the same train as above). LPL-Crewe open return £11.60. Gobowen -Euston unrestricted saver £58.80. Total £70.40 - little more than a third of the full fare.

Hi all.
Im looking for the cheapest option (and/or any promocodes) for train travel from Chester Road to Retford. Departing On the 19/12 (Need to be there for 1pm at the latest) comming back the following day (After 3pm)
So far its £37.00 Open return.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Andi
£17 saver to Nottingham then £14 saver to Retford is one possibility - it does confine you to that route though whereas the normal through saver is valid a variety of ways. You will need to change trains in Grantham.

Well you can avoid the CC charge and booking fee for a start by buying from a TOC website rather than the trainline. Any will do - it doesn't have to run the trains on your route
Try putting a route of Honiton for a cheaper fare if you haven't tried that already. It may or may not help. Doesn't sound too bad a fare anyway BTW

Why do you keep on chatting here? THIS IS FOR PROMOTION CODESS!
Why do you keep on chatting here? THIS IS FOR PROMOTION CODESS!
So the 'correct' answer to posters here is 'shove off, there aren't any' (true most of the time), then? OK maybe a little less bluntly worded.
Or is it to suggest alternative ways of reducing the fare?

I have got it down to £29 rtn.
If you have a mobile you may be able to get TO London for £5 on the Saturday if the times suit with Chiltern's text to mobile fare.
They are not available on Sundays but it's £17.90 walk on fare back on any Chiltern train
Other cheaper fares are with Silverlink via Northampton (£24.50 saver return)
If you don't need to leave Brum until after 1100 on the Saturday then Chiltern have an £18 (return) walk on fare to return on any train on Sunday.

Thanks in advance,

If that's a return fare then it's cheap. Cheaper than anything I could find.
However, bookings for 24 February on Virgin are not open yet - so you could find something still cheaper with advance singles. The cheapest possible single fare is £21, but they look to have sold out on 17th, if there ever were any that cheap. I still don't think that overall it would be any cheaper though as you would be paying a high fare for the outward trip.

You might find one buried away on the Ryanair or Easyjet web sites, but in the main they don't exist any more.
A BAA loyalty card holder could get you one but as it would effectively cost a fiver and is usable only once I doubt if they would.

I didn't do it last year but here is a link to last year's thread- http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=351227&highlight=scotsman
It seems you had to go to a link on the gner ( as it was) webiste and put in the passwords from the paper. I'm sure we can collect them on the newspaper thread or even buy the paper:p - I wonder if it will only let you go Scotland- england not the other way round- but I think we will have to wait to try it.

Does anybody know if the voucher you need to take whilst travelling for the Scotsman offer is printed each day?
I think the full password is 'gonatexpress' it takes you to a page that says;
'Hello,

Knowing my luck, when I go on Tuesday, it will probably say 'Ha ha smart a** you were wrong.'
Anyway, hope this is some help

Since this company took over from GNER I have had so may problems trying to get on to the site. Just managed yesterday as I need tickets for my daughter and I next Friday so she can get to the Glasgow School of Art from Newcastle however the tickets are all over £30.00 each return! Obviously I can't get hold of the London paper or the Scotsman newspaper, any suggestions anyone?? This is so expensive for us I am thinking of driving but would really prefer to go by train.

Unfortunately these are even more expensive, over £40.00. We need to be there for around 10.30 so 7.41 out is the best one there, flexible on return time as long as it's after 16.00. Seems the nearer the date the more prices go up.

If you are in the Newcastle area you can collect tokens from either the Journal (http://www.journallive.co.uk/lifestyle-news/promotions/) or the Evening Chronicle (http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/north-east-news/enter-competitions/national-express/)

Hi again..
Looking to do the same journey either 24/25th jan returning either the 27/28th.
I was told that there could be other savings if i did a GNER route?

Not in your case that I can see. GNER tend not to offer cheap tickets for short hops like Doncaster Retford or Grantham Retford which is all you would be doing with them.

I've been trawling through train websites for HOURS now and I'm no nearer a decent fare....I have to travel from LOUGHBOROUGH (or Leics at a push) to BOURNEMOUTH. I have to be at my destination by 12 midday on the Wed 20/2. I then need to travel back to Loughborough the following day, 21/2 to arrive back by 9pm at the latest.
I really would appreciate any help as I can't get the fare below £79 rtn. MegaBus/ Train times are not do-able.
Many thanks in advance.
I am trying to buy tickets to travel to Birmingham New Street from Stirling on May 10 as early as possible, returning any time on the 11th but the prices are astronomical. Can anybody help?

Yep - have a bit of patience. The cheap tickets are not released beyond mid-April yet.
And before anyone reels out 'exactly 12 weeks' - it's definitely not happening currently.

Hi I hope you guys could help me out, I'm looking for a return train to Sunderland from London for under £30, I am a cash strapped student and need to get a look at the Uni I am applying for!
Is it worth buying a kids ticket and masquerading to save money, is that too hard to pull off, because I look very young for my age and I'm quite small!
I have looked at megabus but the journey time means I would have to stay over night there.
Thanks in advance for your help.

The cheapest possible rail advance single is £12.90 each way. To get that you have to book well in advance.
National Express can also be worth trying - they can be as cheap as megabus and MAY operate an overnight service
Does anyone one know of any good sites r codes to get discount on a 'Young Persons Railcard'?? There was one 'SAVING12' that got 50% off but this ended on 16/03, always the way.

There are some Value Advace C singles available on the outward journey for £5.00. But the catch is they are only for the 14:54 Cross Country departure from LGW. You would still need a Cheap Day Single (valid on any train, no need to book in advance) at £9.10 for the other direction.
Personaly, I would buy a Cheap Day Single each day at the station when I was ready to travel.... £9.10 each way. No worries/cost of postal service etc.

Wanting tickets for 2 adults & 1 child to Manchester Airport from Hudds 23rd April, coming back 3rd May. The only online train company I have used before was thetrainline.com which is saying about £28 with a Family Railcard but it's now saying it's going to charge for posting the tickets out which it never has before. Is there anywhere else to try to get cheaper tickets? Thanks x

Yes, any train operating company. I always recommend that you book through the train operator that you will be travelling on, as occassionally you get special deals on their fares. I suspect you will be travelling on First Transpennine, here (http://www.tpexpress.co.uk/) is a link to their website.

Yes - most of the train company websites will sell you those same tickets at the same price with no extra charges. As will Huddersfield station booking office.
http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/ will do - I just happen to have a short cut set up for them. It doesn't matter that they don't run the trains you will use.

Your outward journey can be done for £8. and the return jouney will cost you £10. These are Advance singles, so buy your tickets before 6pm tomorrow (Tues) - preferably earlier.

£18 return for that journey is not 'very expensive' (cheap singles, £8 out £10 return). £8 is the cheapest available fare.

Any repeat any train booking site will give you that fare - it doesn't matter a **** which. They ALL repeat ALL use the same database of fares though they may look things up in different ways. When you get to the page with return fares, click the button for single fares. You may need to scroll for earlier/later trains as only a few show up at once.
I in fact used http://www.chilternrailways.co.uk/buy-online/
You need to scroll to the end of the list of stations to put a non-Chiltern station in. They don't charge a booking fee/postage.

You are trying to do it too early.
Wait for the cheap tickets to become available ('exactly 12 weeks' is a myth) and then price them with/without a family railcard.
If that fails try split ticketing at Birmingham Cheltenham and Brissle.

Hi everyone,
I am currenlty trying to book a train to Newcastle from Gloucester leaving Friday 2nd May and returning 5th May. Looking on the net its gonna cost me £99.80 a ticket. Friends of mine booked a few months ago and have a ticket for the same dates, but only paid £45 each. Is it worth me waiting til the day to see if they are any cheaper at the train office? Or do i need to bite the bullet and pay up.

I have always found prices increase the later you book so it will be better to book as early as possible, unless you know or hear a promotion is coming up. For example virgin did a recent promo and I travelled first class from london to manchester for £17.50 thanks to vouchers in the daily mail. But for you, there's not much time left so I would book it. Also check other train operators site, sometimes the same route on the same train is cheaper on a competitors site

That's a saver return - it will cost you exactly the same at the ticket office on the day.
It might be worth looking at split ticketing at say Birmingham.

It is not railcard friendly like previous promotions. I think the previous loophole (A. The price it quotes for a full price ticket seems to differ from those usually displayed on other websites and at stations, so it may be worth checking the website of the train company you are travelling with to check the offer is the cheapest.
e.g.
National Express East Coast advance London-York single = £10
Same ticket using FirstScotRail offer = £11.25 - £1.10 (10%) = £10.15

Your best bet is to get the train from Crewkerne to Salisbury - £11.90 single. Then catch a bus to Bournemouth - they go direct, rather than the train's circuitous route via Southampton, and will be cheaper and quicker. I'd guess between £5 and £10. Every hour - maybe every half hour.
There is a cheaper train ticket - £16.80 - but it involves changing stations (walking) in Yeovil and Dorchester and a bus between Wareham and Poole due to engineering works.
http://www.wdbus.co.uk/htm/ttSouthern/S_X3.pdf has the buses

Fastest option:
Southampton Airport Parkway station is immediately adjacent to the airport terminal.
Saver return to London Waterloo for 1 adult + 1 child is about £50 -
if you have a family and friends railcard its £28 (the card costs £24 but is valid for a year - http://www.familyandfriends-railcard.co.uk/ ). Day returns will be cheaper, the Saver is valid for a month.
Further information can be found from the South West Trains website http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk
Cheaper options:
There are coaches from Southampton to London Victoria but they go from the coach station (nowhere near the airport so you have to get there first):
http://www.nationalexpress.com
Promotional rail fares are available from www.megatrain.com (http://www.megatrain.com) , but as far as I know these only go from Southampton Central station so again, you would have to get there first.

With the megatrain fares you do have to board in Southampton, but you can actually get off at Southampton Airport on the way back- which would make things slightly easiers. Megatrains cost from £1 each way but are few and far between as are the other option megabus.
Just so you're aware, the train takes just over an hour, the coach is just under 3 hours. National express do funfares so if you don't mind the length of journey try looking to see if you can get a cheaper deal through the funfares section on their site- they run more frequently than megabus.
There are quite alot of buses from Southampton Airport to Southampton centre, and both the train and coach station are easy to find.

With the megatrain fares you do have to board in Southampton, but you can actually get off at Southampton Airport on the way back
If you want to persue the cheaper options, consult the Unilink timetables which run to the town centre:

Not legally - megatrain forbid travelling short.
In practice it depends whether there are barriers or ticket checks at the Airport Station or not

There aren't any barriers and i've never been checked there by a guard as you dont have to exit through a station or anything. Used it many many times. Southampton central however, does have barriers and if you go by megatrain you have to show the guard your booking to enable them to let you through.

all help gratefully received for slightly complicated trips, thanks
My mother in law will take the kids off our hands for 10 days :T I just have to pay for her rail fare, pick up at Kings Cross. I've got it down to £47 day return for her for 24 July, if she buys a senior railcard. Other prob is my 6 year old (who looks 8), can't get a return fare below about 30 quid for him which seems v steep.
On our usual Brighton-London line kids always travel for a quid, is this child fare price normal?! And are there any ways round it?
(family and friends card not valid as she'll be on her own down from Newcastle-London)

Child fares are generally half the adult price for the same journey - £1 offers are specials and not widely available.

Dzug, isn't this a fairly standard concession within the Network Card area? I know one can certainly get a travelcard for a child at £1 (if travelling with adults who also have travelcards).

Possibly within the zonal area - certainly not the entire Network card area. For example from Bicester North to take a random example an off-peak travelcard is £24.50, adding a child takes it to £36.75.

Cheers for the heads-up on the half price railcard - I applied for one for the family over the weekend.
We are planning a trip to York later this week, so hopefully the card will arrive in time to book tickets.
Tickets for 2 adults and a child, open return on Thursday were coming in at £54 - but with the railcard, they'll cost around £33, which is probably what it would cost for the petrol to drive there and back from Newcastle - less the actual driving time/tiredness as well.
Also, on the railcard website there are some discount offers if you present the card, one of which is 25% off the bill at Bella Italia, which there is one in York - so it looks like lunch is sorted as well if we go!

Sunday 20th July EUSTON LONDON - TIVERTON PARKWAY
So far the best i can get is £42.90 (with a young person railcard ). Also is there any ways in getting firstclass even on the day by spending a little more?? (just know ive travelled on a sunday before and the trains were packed in standard but first class only had a few in)
Only time restrictions are that i need to be in EUSTON by 3:15pm and on the return journey back in Tiverton by a resonable evening time
Any response would be gratefully received thanks

Promotion codes on FGW are like hens teeth. The last time they had them they didn't actually offer anything additional off, it was just their way of checking how well a certain advert worked.
If what you have got are advance purchase single tickets each way then you are unlikely to get it cheaper other than getting the tickets to Paddington only and walking to Euston. If it's not then look for them if you haven't already.
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/promotions/pr3744bcc35ce7410024862c7ece4649/details.html
for details of weekend first. Also worth looking at first class advance purchase tickets - they tend to sell out slower than the standard ones and can sometimes land up being the cheapest available.

You really think the fuel is going to be cheaper (especially when wear and tear factored in)?
What you could do (and technically you can't pass a ticket on to someone else) is get a saver return (cost is £56, as opposed to a saver single at £55) and sell the other portion (it can be used any time within one month).

Yes. I travel regularly by train, but I know how to get the cheapest online quote for a fare, ie by booking in advance, travelling off-peak, registering with rail companies, using a railcard etc etc.
What I'm after (and indeed by the very nature of the thread title), is the codes (which First Scotrail sometimes do) that further reduces the price by 10, 25 or even 50%.
Many of the posters above have confused the thread title with "Find me the cheapest train fare for a specific day please", which I think is somewhere else on this site.
So, any codes around?

if you can book in advance you can get the fares for as little as £11.50 each way BUT train times are pretty limited. That said, you can find them for trains around mid morning going and early afternoon coming back.
As with all advance bookings if you miss your train you have to pay full price - a real killer.
If money is tight - you might consider either megabus (regularly offer fares for £1) or national express fun fares (from £1). Trick with these if you can bear the 4 hour journey is to book 2 tickets on different times, just in case you miss one.

Given that a saver return, buy on the day, no advance booking needed, is 'only' £62.60 each you must be interpreting something wrong.
Cheap singles for the return on the 17th are readily available.
However, there's nothing yet for Saturday 15th and my guess is there won't be for some time. It depends on what engineering work is finalised for that weekend. The timetable you see now may bear little resemblance to what actually runs.
Edit - are you sure that that's £80 ish each and not total? A half saver plus the cheapest advance ticket would come out at not much more than that.

Hi
I travel between Guildford and Doncaster 2-3 times per month, and i use the National Express East Coast booking website. Still, it comes to about £50 return each time.
Can anyone help with money off promo codes, etc etc? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks guys.
Also, does anyone know of any rail cards that I'm applicable for as I am too old for YP now! 27yo, no kids.
Ok then, after many attempts at getting a cheap ticket, it is still cheaper for me to drive to Glasgow from Liverpool than its is to get a train.
For the last 3 months I have tried every method of booking online and in person at a station and the best I could get was £27.50 single.
you get £60 return on trainline and it says try a single from £15.50, never once in 3 month have these tickets been available. I have tried every day.
So Im traveling next week and i have no choice but to drive, its silly.
If they want people to use public transport, they really need to shake the system up. £60 for an advance return is not cheap.

Fordy, you can get a single ticket from Lime St to Glasgow next Wed ( you didn't say exactly when next week you are going) for £21.50 on the 13:22 departure - change at Warrington.
A single coming back the next day can be had for the same price.
Thats £43.00 return. Cheaper than by car. Have you included all running costs, not just petrol?
Sorry, i forgot to add, there is 2 people sharing the cost of the drive, but thanks for pointing out the ticket. You'd think the lad at lime street station would have offered me that option wouldn't you? He had us going via wigan. I wonder why the wigan route costs more when its a shorter route?
Anyway, I'm travelling on the Friday (everything is arranged and has had to be moved round to because we couldnt get a train) I can leave when I want and stop when I want, no worries about changing trains.
I'd happily use the train, but they make it so damn hard to get a reasonably priced ticket.
Thanks again.

MANCHESTER TO LONDON
Hi all
Looking to book the following dates from Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston
Outwards - 24th Oct. arriving in London
Inwards - 1st Nov. arriving in Manchester
Both journeys to arrive around 1300-1330’ish.
Adults - 2
Senior Railcards - 2
The cheapest I have found after looking at the National Rail, FGW, Raileasy, National Express and other sites is around the £85 mark - this is for singles. Returns are showing higher than £120 at present.
Since it’s my elderly in-laws who are travelling I don’t want go through changes - at best splits / singles would be fine.
Also am I too late/early for the cheapest tickets?
All tips/help much appreciated.

The problem that you have is that the 1 Nov is a weekend and the journey is on the West Coast Main Line. Due to the extensive upgrade works taking place on the WCML at the moment, the weekend timetable and the cheap advance tickets are not being released until quite close to the date of travel.
There is a £20.50 ticket on the 24th October @11.15 arr 13.28. Maybe consider travelling on the 31st Oct instead? Plenty of £20.50 tickets available then.
Just checked the booking horizons. Tickets are available for travel on Virgin West Coast on Saturdays up to 8th November.... and indeed they are available on the Saturday after and before the 1st november, but not the 1st November yet.
Oh yes, and I'd always recommend trying the booking engine of the train operator you will be travelling with to see if they have any special online deals. In this case, Virgin Trains.

Well the OFF-PEAK RETURN fare with a railcard is £41.20 per person (only 65p more expensive than a singe fare.) This is the fare you would be charged if you walked into the station on the day asking for a ticket on the trains you describe.
ADVANCE tickets are the ones that could be cheaper - according to the ATOC booking horizons, these tickets have already been released for the days you want to travel. Please note that railcard discounts often do not apply to advance tickets, so you might find that the "off-peak return" with a 34% railcard discount is cheaper than some advance tickets.
Unless you change the times/dates of the trains, it appears that the ADVANCE tickets that would be cheaper have all gone or are not available at the time of writing.
The other place to look is the Print at Home booking site:
http://www.mobitix.thetrainline.com/VT/advancepurchase.aspx
Trains from Mon-Thursday are available from £1 each way - so you'd need to change your dates to make the most of these (and wait until the "Booking available to" date changes to include your dates.)
Hope this helps.

Same thing happened to me. I've just booked tickets on the Virgin site and got them £10 cheaper than from Qjump, who were charging £49. I should point out that the journey is partly on Virgin and partly on National Express, so well pleased.

Bookings for Christmas are not yet released. If you wait a week or two, you will be able to purchase advance tickets.
thanks, please can you tell me when cheap tickets for around 19th dec are released?
Does anyone have the 3 passwords from Sat-Mon Scotsman for cheap(er) National Express tickets?
Do the T&C state you have to take the papers with you? (In which case does anyone have any spare papers? I live south of the border, but have a pending trip back to my homeland!)
Thanks

Megatrain might help for the Friday journeys - Loughborough - London and London - Portsmouth http://www.megatrain.com/uk/index.php
They don't run on Sundays.
For the Sunday any of the rail sites should give you the same prices - try for a cheap single for the through journey. If there isn't one, try Reading - London (will be expensive - no cheap fares on this route) and London - Loughborough separately to see if it works out any better.

Does anyone know if they can get a cheaper fare than £56 for a single train journey from Liverpool to Southampton? Thanks
Your fare is not in the fares list - What is it? It's cheaper than the standard fare so on the face of it is good.
There are various advance singles available ranging in price from £11.50 to £38.50 - you should be able to get one of these if you book far enough in advance. A full fare single (not via London) is £71
You could try an advance single to London (which ought to be readily available in advance) then megatrain to Portsmouth

Does anyone know if they can get a cheaper fare than £56 for a single train journey from Liverpool to Southampton? ThanksIf you book far enough in advance there should be some deals. e.g. 15 December:
Using fare finder on the Trainline http://www.farefinder.thetrainline.com/BestFares.aspx?orig=LIV&dest=EUS&out=20081215 I found £8 fares Liverpool Lime Street to London Euston.
Then a £1.50 (with oyster) or £4 (cash fare) on Northern Line (Charing Cross Branch) Southbound from London Euston to London Waterloo.
London Waterloo to Southampton on megatrain (www.megatrain.co.uk (http://www.megatrain.co.uk/)) on 15 December there are plenty of seats for £6/8

I need to be in Newcastle for around 12:30pm on February 21st next year. I will be leaving at anytime on the 22nd. The cheapest return fare I can find (from Chesterfield) is £58 which is loads and I can get to London for less!!
Does anyone have any good ideas of websites I can look at?? Or weird and wonderful routes I can take to keep the costs down??
Haven't checked, but my guess is you are trying to book too early. Certainly a few days ago Cross Country hadn't released tickets (cheap ones that is) beyond the end of January.
So just be patient and don't believe what you are told about 'exactly 12 weeks'. It's a total lie.

Underneath the option for railcards, there is an 'advanced options' button, click that and it allows you to enter a promotional code.
That said if you're trying to use the code LTTL5D to get £5 off, I can't get it to work?!

The fare is only a couple of ££ cheaper from Derby
You could try split tickets at Manchester - if there are any (cheap) advance singles available (from £8 each way supposedly) then this would be better, but I couldn't find any for a random day in about a month

Unfortunately there isn't a discount for being 17 unless you have a railcard.
I would suggest you try splitting the ticket as you need to take two trains anyway.
First route I've tried is Oxford to Derby, Derby to Nottingham. The first part is on Cross Country - who offer advanced fares (approx £18 each way). The second leg is on East Midlands Trains who don't have advance fares so readily available (but a full priced return is £6).
The second route is Oxford to B'mingham New Street, B'mingham to Nottingham. Both legs with Cross Country. First leg is £12 each way, second leg is £9.50 each way.
Doing the first split you could pay just £42. There may even be other permitted routes - these were just the first I tried.

Both the 6:36 and 7:06 from Oxford to Derby are available at £18.
The 6:36 arrives at Derby at 8:42. You could then catch the 9:10 from Derby to Nottingham which arrives at 9:37. This part if £6 return.
I'm getting my prices from www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com

You can get to Bristol cheaply enough but getting back is the problem - so maybe via London on the return only

Travel with London Midland on the Desiro unit.
An off-peak day return (valid on the 08:46 from Euston, thence any later train) is £28 each. Can return on any train.
If you're going for more than one day, there is a period return (return within a month) for £30 each (return fare).
If you have railcards (16-25, senior, etc) prices reduce by a third.

You can get a period return ticket (any permitted) for £66.10 (return price).
However, the cheapest way is to get a Manchester-Stoke ticket (£11.00 single, £11.10 day return) then the Stoke-Euston ticket I talk about in the response above (£27.90 single, £30.00 period return).
These tickets are all off peak (except the single Manchester-Stoke which is 'anytime'.

Try this a bit slow but saves you some money look for the advance singles;
Exeter to Bristol
Bristol to Manchester Pic Via Newport(SW)
Manchester Pic to Leeds
I worked it out at £62 return but you need to play with the times to get the best savings and as these are advance singles give yourself plenty of time to catch you next train at least 30 mins

You would be breaching the T&C of the tickets. If Stoke has ticket barriers you wouldn't get on the train in the first place.
Try London Midland Trains and specify a route of via Northampton - it can be a lot cheaper, but is also slower.
AirlieBird
18-03-2009, 6:21 PM
If you want flexibility then £109 is the cheapest you're going to get (unless you go on the slower London Midland trains as suggested by dzug). However, if you are prepared to stick to trains you are booked on, and depending on what time of day you want to travel, there are tickets available for £30 return on Virgin.

Only the advance singles are cheaper and the 12 week rule is an urban legion more 8-12 weeks.
You can get Advance singles for that journey and they start from £4 each way but as it's Arriva XC and their a bit tight with those tickets and therefore the cheapest is £8 each way total £16 return but you give up your flexiblity and have to travel on a booked train.

You can save a small amount on the walk on day return off peak fares by changing at Worcester and rebooking there
Otherwise, as already said, wait for the cheap tickets. 12 weeks just doesn't happen.
Arriva have supposedly released up to 12 June - if there aren't any they haven't filtered through to the system yet.

Welshtony, Virgin Trains have only released up to the 22nd of May for the Cheap Advance tickets for this route, the £65.40 is the off peak walk on fare and will be the same on the day of travel. Virgin trains are at the moment a bit late with releasing their cheap tickets apparently this is down to their timetable change and hopefully in the next couple of weeks the tickets will be out, Keep checking daily, I could give you a website to give you release dates but the Virgin trains date is totally wrong.

Hello,
I'm traveling from Coventry to Poole on 27th April returning 1st May 2 adults 1 child with a family railway card. The route I am currently looking at buying is a direct service from Coventry to Bournemouth and then paying for the short hop from Bournemouth to Poole when we get there. The cheapest I am getting is £80 with Virgin and The trainline. I really was hoping to get it cheaper. Is there any other sites I can check or does anybody know of any discount codes?
There are a fair few other sites you can check but they will give you exactly the same prices (assuming you ask the same question). It will be a waste of time. Given that the fare you have got is cheap advance singles I can't see you getting it any less by an extra split
However you go to http://www.fgw5pounds.co.uk/ and register you can get a £5 discount off the booking
It's 'just' possible that travel via London, possibly using megatrain for London - Poole, might be cheaper, but I doubt it sufficeiently to not be bothered to look it up
