Hi,
Never booked a train ticket online before (!) so welcome any advice you can give ...
Trying to book a single adult ticket to Preston from Watford on the evening of Friday 2 March but can only get a £62 fare.
Does anyone have any idea if I can improve on this, please?
Thanks

Hi
I am a lurker on this site and don't post very often but need to buy a train ticket from Leeds to London on the morning of the 10th March returning the following day mid morning and the cheapest I seem to be able to find it is £70 per person (2 adults travelling). Can anyone help me improve on this? Not wise to the tricks of the trade yet!
Thanks

By two singles instead of buying a return. These tickets are quota controlled so will sell out - and you have to travel on that particular train.
14/04 - Manchester to London
- Fares for £12.50 avaliable all day.
16/04 - London to Manchester
- Fares for £12.50 available from 11.05am to 1.05pm and from 8.17pm

£179 is the standard return flexible fare (for 2 adults and 2 kids). Buy a Family Railcard for £20 and the total price is £101.50 return - plus you get to use the railcard for discounted fares for the rest of the year.
Buying two singles is cheaper than buying a return (£37.50 single for 4 without the Railcard) but they all seem to be sold out on the Sunday evening coming back depsite some being available on the Saturday morning.

If I have read it correctly, Morf downloaded the tokens and forms from the Daily Mail website, therefore they are expecting you to print them? If that is the case, do they need printing in colour or doesn't it matter?
Many thanks
Anon
I personally wouldn't risk printing the tokens and form not in colour as the terms and conditions specifically state no photocopies allowed and perhaps if they weren't in colour, it might look like a photocopy? I think I worry too much about these things!!
I have booked on tomorrow's train, so will let you know how I get along - have no reason to worry though judging by previous posts.

I've managed to get Oxford - Manchester £15 return! I've printed out the tokens in B&W (because I don't have access to a colour printer) and received my tickets on friday, having only booked wednesday night! (They said allow 4 days, but it was sent by 1st class!) I've looked at the tickets and I can't see anything different from normal full price bought online! So I hope they don't check.. but if they do ask.. and wonder why they arent on newspaper.. I'm just gonna say that I have a 'subscription to the Daily Mail online' and printed these out from there. They aren't photocopies. Thanks to Morf for posting up tokens :) How have people got on with these? Have many conductors asked to see the tokens? I'll tell you laterl how I got on with my journeys on tuesday and wednesday.

Hope this is helpful...
I used the Daily Mail vouchers as downloaded from a link on this site - gave them to the guard on a "ONE" service from London to Norwich and he said - "Not sure what I'm meant to do with these" and stamped my ticket and moved on (he didn't take the vouchers), on the return journey they didn't even ask.

I'm now in total stress mode and need help please! I've spent 3 evenings so far trawling the web trying to get the best London (Luton) to Leeds deal and I'm tearing my hair out! I posted this in another part of the forum but know people have their 'favourite' bits so thought I'd try here too. My 25 year old cousin has started working for EasyJet - he started his training month on Monday and discovered that although they'll accomodate him whilst he's actually training he needs to make his own arrangements for days off. He's skint and can't afford to keep the room on at the hotel so wants to come to me but despite trying loads of combinations it all seems really expensive. He hasn't much money to spare so I want to help out. Basically he finishes at 5pm on Sunday and needs to be back for 8am on Wednesday at the cheapest possible price and not having to travel most of the night if at all possible! Can anyone point me in the right direction for split fares etc etc. He doesn't have a rail card yet but that's obviously an option. Thanks in advance

I'm looking to go to Edinburgh on the morning/afternoon of the 4th April from Crewe and return the other way back on the 11th. Best I can currently find is £56.00 for two adult fares, is there a cheaper option hat anyone knows of?
If anyone is particularly qualified to answer the following, I would also appreciate it. I am going with my wife and my two sons, being 2 and 4 years old. I'm worried that although I don't have to pay for either of them, if the train was busy, we would not be able to get the four year old in a seat. Are these trains that leave around midday particularly busy or should i get a child seat for him to make sure? The answer would seem obvious, but if I pick one of these up and the train isn't busy, I'll be kicking myself! :rotfl:

www.megatrain.com - £1 fares between Manchester Picadilly to Edinburgh - need to book in advance. These trains are not busy, that is why they offer cheap fares.
Then just add a normal fare from Crewe to Manchester.

further to the comments re. the daily mail offer -thanks to Morf for uploading the tokens. funnily enough my parents get the Mail day in, day out -but i didn't think to cut out the tokens at the time.:(
anyway i printed them off and travelled manchester-london return last week. i booked the day before travel and it cost £15 (the best non-token price was £56ish!). i was concerned about being pulled up about the tokens -as they obviously don't look like they've come from the newspaper), but wasn't asked about them at all. this was despite the 'train manager' spending 5 mins at the start of the journey back from London advising that 'you will be charged the full open ticket price (£109...)' if there is the tiniest detail wrong with your ticket.
BTW -the only physical difference to the actual rail tickets is that 'virgin promo 2' was printed (discreetly) on the top of the ticket.

I'm buying tickets for 2 adults and 1 child to go to Scarborough on Saturday 10th from Manchester and the cheapest I can find is £52.30 despite yesterday there being one for £49.85 which is now only available on my return time.
I notice on Trainline they have a place for promotion code - is there one or can anyone suggest a cheaper ticket!!

Managed to get it to £49.20 by doin two open return tickets
Manchester ---> Leeds £20.35
Leeds ---> Scarborough £28.85
Is this allowed and is there problems with open returns? The price is the same if I do a normal return and state the time. I suppose a open return is safer in case anything delays the match I'm going to.

Apparently I should have bought the tickets at that price. The last few days, every time I search on nationalrail.co.uk, I get a message that says, "Sorry, the site can't find any trains meeting your request." I get that message no matter what I try. I don't know what's going on.
On GNER, I can find tickets, but there is NOTHING for less than £74.10 each way!!! I'm about to cry.
Any ideas? Or are my husband and I doomed to spend nearly £300 just to get to York and back? We need to travel to York on March 17th and back to London on March 24th.
Thanks.

You could split the ticketing at Leeds, quite often there's cheap fares between London and Leeds ( I used to do this route all the time when I was a student!). Or, at a push you could even get the National Express or Megabus from London to Leeds (from around £3 each way). From Leeds, you can get a Saver Return to York for about £12 on the train, or there's even a bus between Leeds and York which takes an hour and a half and costs around £5 each way!
It's a lot of messing about I know, but it's the only way I can think of, so it depends how much you wanna save money!
Hope this helps! xxx

Try Manchester- Sheffield and then Sheffield-London on Midland Mainline.
Speaking of Leeds there's a new promotion out today, £5 one-way between Leeds and London on GNER. Book by March 29th for travel between May 21st and June 22nd.

As it turns out, our travel companions are willing to pick us up in Leicester, since they're driving from Hereford to York that morning, and planned to stop in Leicester anway (why they chose that route, I don't know, but it works for me!). So, yesterday I bought one-way train tickets from London Kings Cross to Leicester for the morning of the 17th. Then, I bought one-way tickets from York to London for the morning of the 24th. The total for these tickets was £13pp from London to Leicester, and £16pp from York to London. I bought them directly through GNER.
Thanks again for all your help!

The virgin ticket will only be from Preston to London, your trip Blackpool to Preston will have to be on a normal ticket that probably won't be as discounted(or you could drive!). This is as, as far as I know, virgin don't do trains to blackpool!

(1) download and save the folder of vouchers kindly provided by Morf:
I've uploaded all the images and coupons that you may need, and you can get all this here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/14493248/Daily_Mail_Offer.rar.html
So simply print your own coupons with the tokens and voucher in there, hop over to the train companies site, book your trains, first class for a tenner, and enjoy a free meal and alcohol, maybe make a connection, use another coupon if necessary, and a fresh set if you are doing a return journey.
Enjoy,
Morf.
(2) Download and install a free programme that can extract RAR folders, such as Stuffit (standard edition) for Windows or Mac by going to www.Download.com and searching for "Stuffit".
(3) Extract your set of Daily Mail tokens and form, and print them on a colour printer ideally.
(4) Book via your chosen train operating company's special link, as provided by west_bear

Book it between 0700 - 1800 on the 18th March...early is best

Cant do the 18th. I managed to find a ticket at 1:30 on the 19th for £15 so I'll just go with that.
Quick question. I downloaded the files. Do I put the tokens on the card before printing? Or print then cut out and stick on?
Also, which card do I use or does it not matter?
Oh and lastly - if its 2 of us going do we just need 1 card with 3 tokens for both people?
Thanks!

All i said to you in last post was phone on the 18th to book with Virgin as per their T&C's "one day in advance"...as u were wanting to travel on 19th u would had to have phoned them by 1800hrs on the 18th.
I printed the tokens & vouchers seperately then as u said...cut them out n stuck tokens to voucher.....i used the blue voucher i'm hoping this is ok lol
yip one card covers upto 4 travelling...have a look at the link on last past i sent you.
"A set of 3 differently numbered tokens (can include one bonus token) allows up to 4 passengers to travel on the promotional fares and passengers must travel together in both directions."

Hi there... I just came accross this website and everyone seems so helpful so I thought I might be able to get some help!
I want to book a ticket to go from Euston to Stoke-on-trent on Fri 25th May (about 6pm) and return Sun 27th May (late afternoon).
I checked the Virgin Website and the cheapest I found was £49. Does anyone know of any promotional codes I could use or if it's cheaper to book the ticket nearer the time (this is the only date I can make)?
Thanks

"Just 15" return is available between Birmingham Snow Hill and Elmers End (via Marylebone & Tube) all for £16.00.
However, there are restrictions to which trains you can travel on:
Mondays to Fridays: Valid on any train arriving London Marylebone after 1345 or departing London Marylebone between 1100 and 1555 or after 1955.
Saturdays: Valid on any train arriving London Marylebone after 1345 or departing London Marylebone after 1100.
Sundays: Valid on any train.
Apparently, connections from the West Midlands (e.g. Stourbridge) to Birmingham Snow Hill are free of charge when buying this type of ticket. Best to ask at the station - this ticket doesnt need to be bought in advance and can be bought at the station.

You can book it on through www.nationalrail.co.uk, making sure you choose Birmingham Snow Hill (not Stourbridge) to Elmers End - or just buy one at your local station (in advance if needs be).
They arent subject to availability or anything, they are a just-turn-up-and-buy-on-the-day type ticket. Plus, if your daughter has a railcard, its only £10.

The Birmingham to Leeds leg needs to be bought in advance through www.virgintrains.com, otherwise the price will go up.
No discounts, as unforntualy the code for saving £5 is on individual tickets over £20 and not per transaction.

Hi, I'm looking to book train tickets in June too. Do you (or anyone else) know when the cheapest tickets do go on sale? Train is on Virgin, the Value A tickets are on sale, but the B and C cheaper ones are not. Who'd have thought booking a train ticket could be so complicated (I've got seperate dates for MegaTrain and ScotRail services going on sale!).

Hi,
I have to travel on First Great Western at short notice to attend a funeral next week.
I have downloaded the Daily Mail vouchers kindly provided on this site.
Please could somebody tell me whether this offer is still valid as I notice the vouchers are from January / February?
Also, if the offer is still running, please could you tell me how I use these vouchers to book my tickets. Is there a promotion code to book on the web, or do I need to telephone a particular number?
The link to the Daily Mail Promotion Terms and Conditions is no longer active. :(
Any help is greatly appreciated, as being an unexpected journey I hadn't budgeted for this expense.
Thank you.

Hi,
Having checked out the Virgin Trains site, it appears that the Daily Mail offer expires tomorrow, so it is no good for my journey. :(
Please could anybody suggest a cheaper fare for my journey:
London (any station) to Plymouth Monday 02/04/07 (AM)
Plymouth to London (any station) Thursday 05/04/07 (AM)
I have looked at the Megabus.com site, but there are no direct trains and the timings for changing at Exeter aren't suitable for the connections.
I am particularly interested in trying the money saving method of buying several single tickets.
Any help appreciated.
Thank you.

As you are looking to buy tickets close to your date of travel - most of the cheap ones have sold out.
However the cheapest I can find is £20.50 going out (and using code "LTTL5D" - via www.thetrainline.co.uk)
- at 09.05, 10.05, 11.05, 12.05, 13.05
and £13 returning at 08.55
Total £33.50 return.

Hi all,
Im new here, so, erm, hi!
Im looking to travel with my girlfriend from Brum New Street to Newcastle Central. Going 11/04/07 and returning 15/04/07. Time between 12 and 2 are fine. I have a student railcard, she does not. Ive looked on the trainline, which i usually use.
Going there is fine, VALUE ADVANCE SINGLE A = £38.50 for the two.
Coming back however, the only one available are STANDARD OPEN SINGLE - £103.75 :S !?!?! We could go first class advanced for £8 more! Surely there is a cheaper option. Am i right in thinking that £103.75 is that same price if i buy on the day of return?
Any cheaper deals would be very much appreciated.
Thanks.

It would be worth trying Virgin's own website for this. They will I believe sell 'half a saver return' for the return journey rather than a full priced single.

And yes a standard open single is what you would pay on the day.

If you were prepared to go via Sheffield you could get Man-Sheff £6 leaving Man at 17:42 arr 18:41, then Shef-Lon 19:47 arr 21:53 for £12:50, total £18:50. If not £40 single, 1st class, or £42 std. class !! straight to Euston. Plenty at £19:50 for the return journey on the 17th if you can leave before 13:05.

Further to the reply to pompeyrich, if you don't fancy the trip via Sheffield, there is the option of a late departure from Manchester to Euston. You can get a one way fare of £19.50 on the 20:15 departure arriving at Euston at 22:57 or for £12.50 departing at 20:45 and arriving at 00:09 the following day. These fares can be combined with the £19.50 return as mentioned by pompeyrich. If you want to travel earlier, you might as well get a Saver return at £59.50. If you qualify for a Railcard, then get one for discounted fares.
In general, the cheapest Advance fares usually go on sale about 12 weeks before travel. They are limited in supply and the tickets for a prime time, like a Friday evening train to London, will have sold out weeks ago. If possible, you should plan and book in advance to get the cheapest fares.
The fares I found were obtained from the Journey Planner on :-
http://nationalrail.co.uk/
This is an excellent website with details of times and fares for any journey.

Good spot Roland, I must be slipping missing that 20:15 one, agree National rail site is about the best around, although it is worth double checking the train operators own site as there are sometimes special offers there that dont show up on NR, also Megatrain for certain trips, Manchester-Carlisle, Glagow or Edinburgh for £1 is hard to beat!

If you buy a family railcard for £20, lasts a year, you can get a super advance saver return for £108 for the 3 of you, leaving oxford at 09:36 and returning at 14:10, other return times are available you will have to search around for them , you MUST travel on the train you book, so there is no flexibility. These prices were found HERE. (http://nationalrail.co.uk/) Alternatively you could try to get a cheap ticket to Manchester and then MEGATRAIN (http://www.megatrain.com/uk/) it from there.

Hi Evesham,
I have only just seen your reply on my return from Plymouth! Thank you for your suggestion - it is precisely what I did in the end! £67 (2x £33.50) fares using the discount code, which basically worked out as 2 for 1, as it is usually £64 for one return ticket.
Very good value for money & even better, as I can claim the return fares back as the train journey was 1 hour 20 minutes late on its return journey!
So London - Plymouth return for £41 - excellent stuff!
Thanks again.

G'day folks,
I would like to travel from Edinburgh to Coventry RETURN, leaving Edinburgh at approximately 5pm (+/- an hour) on Fri 15 Jun
and
on the return journey, leaving Coventry no earlier than 13.30 on Sat 16 Jun.
I was quoted a price of approximately £90 over the phone!
Can someone help me find a cheaper price?

Friday 15th June leave EDI at 16.52 arr Cov 21.49, Sat 16th June leave Cov 16.10 arr Edi 21.40 for £25 each way, £50 total from National rail journey planner. Look at 2 singles rather than a return. The single fares are less flexible, meaning you have to travel on the booked train only.

For anyone travelling between 2 stations in Scotland there's currently an offer from Scotrail for 50% off Saver Return, SuperSaver Return and Cheap Day Return tickets. I posted it here (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=426725) on the discounts board, where it'll probably get better exposure than being in the middle of this long thread (important since bookings must be made by the 17th April).

Looking to book for 4 adults from Darlington to London going Sat 14th July around 10am leaving Sunday 15th July around 4pm. Registered for e-mail updates from GNER for release dates, their site shows booking upto 6th July. Tried this morning on spec and the dates are released and cheapest option is £90 return. This is not bad but had hoped to get in early and buy single tickets at a cheap price. Any ideas?
Yes have a bit of patience - the dates don't look released to me looking at the site. 6 July , yes - anything after, no. I think you are misreading the site.
The £90 is a walk on ticket.

The cheapest Virgin Values at £9 each way are readily available for your dates
For a group booking you need to phone or go into a station - it may not be much if anything cheaper.

Thanks for the quick response. I know the home page states seats released upto 6th July, but if you search for a seat on the dates mentioned in my earlier post they are available to book. I then did a search for seats the weekend after ie the 21st to the 22nd and these are unavailable to book.

Is that the one in Bristol or the one in France?
If the latter Ryanair fly there from London Stansted. Also from Liverpool to Nimes (not far off) which might be more convenient for you.
If the former Virgin trains to Bristol, then local train or bus.

Seats being available to book does not mean cheap tickets released to book - the two can and often are be on different dates.

Could be they are in the process of doing it - the date on the site will be changed when they've finished. I understand the whole process is quite lengthy.
I'm confident you'll get your cheap seats.

Where TO Jodie?
If it's Manchester (as another of your posts suggests) just go onto the Virgin Trains web site and poke your dates in. I'd start from London (I assume you can get there easily from Cheshunt) which is where the cheap fares will be from.
July cheap fares may or may not be there yet - if they are not keep trying.

Get yourself the free family railcard posted on theis site, then pay for one of the kids, even if they are under 5 you can do this, you will then get a total fare of £86:25 for all 4 of you. You have to change at Norwich & Nottingham, so you could try breaking the journey into smaller sections and see if that works out cheaper.

I need help *newbie*
Myself and 4 other adults are going to be travelling from Burnley to Skegness on the 11th May and returning on 14th May
From going on the virgin trains website i can get a saver return for all 5 of us for £265. I then spotted the '£5 off each ticket' promotion and got the price down to £240.
But then i spotted a write up regarding 'ticket splitting' and it showed that you can get huge savings.
This is what i read
Special fares are often available for part of the route. Therefore by buying several tickets which in combination make up the whole route, you'll often massively sever the price; even though you're on the same train. To put my anorak on for a moment, don't worry, this is within the National Rail Conditions of Carriage and has been confirmed by the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC); the only rule is that the train must call at the stations you've bought tickets for.
An example to help. £174 saved from London to Penzance
For London to Penzance a standard open return was £234. This train stops in Bristol; so then I checked separate ticket prices. By buying four singles: London to Bristol, Bristol to Penzance and then for the return Penzance to Bristol and Bristol to London; the total cost was a tiny £36, a saving of £198. And remember this is for the same trip, on the same train, which you needn't get off!
Do you think i could get such savings with the route that i want or will i not be able to get i a further discount as i won't be on tjhe same train for the whole journey and i will be changing trains thorughout the journey.
Going on 11/05/07
Burnley (Manchester Rd) > Leeds > Grantham > Skegness
Returning on 14/05/07
Skegness > Grantham > Leeds > Burnley (Manchester Rd)
If i can save some money on the cheapest fare i found (£240) that would be GREAT!!!
Take a look at splitting your tickets Burnley => Leeds, Leeds => Grantham (GNER) and Grantham = > Skegness (Central). The Leeds/Grantham sector will probably be best with 2 singles, and the Central Trains bit is cheapest with 'Groupsave' tickets - 4 travel for the price of 2, and the fifth ticket is at full rate so 5 travel for the price of 3 here. The ticketing websites don't seem to recognise the 'Groupsave' offer but ticket office staff do. See the Central Trains site for details.

When splitting tickets.. say oxford - birmingham, then birmingham - preston.. do you have to do 2 seperate transactions when buying online? So that's 4 transactions if you're doing the reverse for the return as well?
Please help! Is there any way of doing it in one transaction. Thanks :)

Just checked the GNER promo code and it doesn't work - 20% off.
Plus with the group save option included its still dearer than if i go with the trainline offer (£5 off each ticket)
GOING
Burnley to Leeds £10 each
Leeds to Grantham £8.40 each
Grantham to Skegness £6 each
COMING BACK
Skegness to Grantham £6 each
Grantham to Leeds £8.40 each
Burnley to Leeds £10 each
Total all tickets each = £48.80each
With the trainline offer *£5 off* it only equals £48 each.
Seems that the spliting tickets doesn't work in this case

You can do it all in one transaction if by that you mean using one payment. When you have reserved one ticket you go to 'buy another ticket' instead of going straight to payment. (On the Virgin site anyway, I'm pretty sure - the others are probably the same)

Just used the American Express code and got a great deal with it, somehow ticket was £12 cheaper the best price I found without using the offer, and the £22 Amex ticket leaves London at 16.30 rather than 15.30 like the £34 standard one. So I don't have to take the mick too much with the time I leave work.

This doesn't seem like a promotion at all. The fares they are quoting are their normal FirstMinuteFares, which you can get at any time if you book early enough. For example, Bristol-London is £10 single. I tried several routes and dates and nothing special comes up.

If they took money out of your account, the transaction should have gone through. Otherwise it is stealing. Phone them up. Good luck.

Megatrain do have tickets. I'm guessing you haven't indicated how many people are travelling to get onto the next screen. Buy two single tickets through www.megatrain.com
Out 29/06:

You could reduce it to £93 by getting singles to Lancaster and back at £16 2x£4x2,you could get the 10.33 from G-O-S, then the 11.29 from Lancaster to London at £31, return on the 28th at 16.46 for £46. No doubt there are different places to split the journey, I tried Preston but that was dearer, so just keep trying !!

From Lincoln, you must be a RAF lass and a desperate one at that !!
For the times you want there is a train that leaves Lincoln 07.59 arriving in London Kings Cross at 9.51 change at Newark then returning 20.38 arriving back in Lincoln 22.36 once again change at Newark. For the times you want it will cost you £60.50 according to http://nationalrail.co.uk/index.html
Hope that helps
Just buy a saver on the day - £36.45 with a railcard.
You could save a few ££ by booking advance singles (at £15.50 each way) online but you say you can't do that.
You'll have to come back before 2100 BTW - last train is at 2030.

I really hope someone can help me. I need to go London to Northampton, then Northampton to Bradford, then Bradford to London. All off peak with a railcard. The best I can do it £48
So... does anyone have any codes (eg for the trainline or similar?) or does anyone know how I can do this journey for less than £48???
Please help me :o
Is this on one day or spread over several days? Could make a lot of difference.
What tickets make up the £48?

The 3 journeys are all seperate days. The £48 is made up by buying all singles, breaking the journey at Birmingham and Leeds because that seems to be cheapest. The Birmingham-Leeds and Leeds-London tickets are advanced value tickets, the others are what you would buy on the day.

In that case I doubt if you will do better. London - Northampton and Northampton - Birmingham are not journeys conducive to cheap fares and if you've got cheap singles for the rest you are doing well. Not aware of any current incentive codes - they are not that frequent.

Actually I do have one thought that is worth checking out. Try getting a bus from Northampton to somewhere on the Midland Mainline - Kettering is the most obvious - and see what if any cheap singles to Bradford you can get from there.
Don't know what the bus fare will be - well under a fiver I would guess. They are quite frequent and it's not very far.

i'm not sure if i should be posting in this thread, but i've been tearing my hair out all day trying to find train tickets from edinburgh to nottingham on the 29th june, arriving in nottingham at around 12 midday. the returns are something ridiculous like £120, but the little tips and tricks that have been suggested on this site are frying my brain, as i know nothing at all about trains or how to get around in nottingham. has anybody got any tips on what i should be trying? why is this so difficult??!

Where are you getting the quoted £120?
Two saver returns cost £106.20.
If you buy a Network Card (£20) you can get this down to £70.10 for a further £16.10 saving.... and you can use your Network Card for the rest of the year to get similar discounts!

On Fri 20/7 the 12.30 from Kings Cross to York is £33.50 single per person
On Sun 22/7 most afternoon singles are £33.50 or £36.50 first class.
Saver returns £74.10 up to 14.35 Fri (and after 19.00)

Cheaper but less flexible than a saver but single to Doncaster at 14:35 or 15:35 at £28:50, then single to York at £9:60, then single back to London as in Will's post for £33:50= £71:60pp Not great but probably a bit late to get the real bargains.

Hi 2 adults due to travel to London from Manchester on Saturday 15th September and want to arrive by 3pm latest - early morning best. We're due to return Sunday 16th September at anytime.
Does anyone have any Virgin train promotional codes or can you suggest a cheaper way of getting down to London?
The Sunday there seems to be one train only that offers a £12.50 ticket (12:05-15:40 Euston -Piccadilly) which would be fine but I can't seem to find any cheap tickets for the Saturday to arrive by early afternoon - cheapest seems to be the standard £29.75 so total price is £42.25.
Can this be beaten? Can anyone help? Thanks!

Two ideas (without doing any research):
FGW Firstminute fare to London, GNER advance singles to/from Darlington.
FGW Firstminute fare to Cheltenham, Virgin Value singles each way to Darlington. Or VV singles are available for the complete journey via Cheltenham - 'from' £16 each way.
The service via London is faster.
Or out one way back the other

If you don't mind a slower journey Midland Mainline offer cheap advance singles - usually via Sheffield. Worth checking. You need to 'force' the site to show them as it ignores slow journeys. Inserting a via Sheffield should do it.

There is a £12:50 from, Liverpool at 10:09 or 11:09, stopping at Crewe at ether 10:47 or 11:47 arr Euston 13 or 14 :36 an open single Manchester to Liverpool is £8:40 or Crewe £9:50  , so a bit cheaper but not much. Out of interest where do you find a std. single for £29, it shows £59 for me.

It's not a standard single, it's a half saver. AFAIK only the Virgin site offers them for use when a VV is available one way but not the other.

Thanks Dzug, learnt something today. I tried to book one of these before, on the theory that half a return = a single but it wouldnt let me do that. Didnt think to tie it up with a cheap single for the return leg, even if no plans to use the return, for a good saving on a std single.

Can anyone help me.

Flight is due in from Florida at 05:10 am. Travel is to be for 3 adults and 1 child - have got a Family Railcard. Want to know the best option without tying ourselves down too much on the return journey in case of flight delays.

Hi Thanks for help previously given on site - very useful. Womdered if some kind sole can help me out again.
On National Rail Enquiries website they say the cheapest journey I can get from Manchester to Llanelli (South Wales) on Friday 28th September leaving at 13:24 and returning Monday 1st October at 14:29 is £24.00 (Value Advance Single C £12 x 2).
However when I click through to the booking sites (either Virgin/Trainline/Arriva) they do not give me these options (or even those particular trains). They don't give option to go for "cheapest fare" rather than "quickest fare".
It seems to be a problem returning and only offers me the Saver Rtn at £62.40.
Can anyone help me secure a fare of £24 or cheaper than £62.40?
Thank you! Helen

Yes I can get you the £24 fare. When you go to the other site to buy use a VIA of Cheltenham which will force you onto Virgin for most of the journey.

If you have a Natwest account call 0800 408 2519 for £5 off a family railcard and/or a senior railcard. Promotion valid until 28th September 2007 so no need to rush if you dont need a railcard until later. Non NatWest a/c holders, not sure if they check whether you have an account with them or not. The offer is in the latest Natwest magazine, no codes to quote just call the above number.

Yes you should be able to. Try it - when you have booked one journey, go to 'book another journey' rather than straight to payment. If it all goes pear shaped then abandon the booking. You won't have lost anything.

I've finally booked ticket for £25! It's weird I had to go about it in a weird way. I booked an Adv Sgl A from Manchester to Llanelli direct 12:34-17:23 for £13 on Virgin site. It wouldn't let me book a cheap return except via 2 changes but I actually went to Trainline site and selected via Stockport and once I selected the "cheapest ticket" option it brought up a £12 fare from Llanelli-Stockport & Stockport-Manchester so 14:29-18:53 and 19:06-19:20. It's weird as Llanelli train goes direct to Manchester but forces you onto a Virgin journey for last 14 minutes to get cheap fare!!
So I'm happy now as return for £25. It just shows that tickets still aren't as straightforward as they say!!
Thanks for all your help.

Thursday 9 August Birmingham NS-Manchester Picadilly 12:48-14:20
Manchester Picadilly - Man Airport 14:33-14:56 = £29.75 for Value Advance Single C
Saturday 1 September Man Airport - Crewe 06:57-07:31
Crewe - Bham NS 08:10-09:06 = £29.75
for Value Advance Single C but you may have to pay more if you don't want to definitely have this journey.
A standard open journey would be £91.00 so then it would be £120.75 rather than £59.50.
Hope this helps!

Can any train experts help me?
3 people travelling London - Glasgow, going out on Fri 31 Aug and returning Monday 3 Sept - we want to go as early as possible on Friday & return any time at all after about 11.10am on Monday.
Cheapest I have found is about £75 with Virgin, I don't know anything about railcards but would be happy to buy one since I expect I'd use it for other journeys over the year.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated!

Is that each or for all of you? If it's all of you grab it while it's there. I doubt it is though.
If it's each a railcard will save enough money on that price to pay for its cost - assuming you are eligible for one (a student, over 60 or travellling as a family with at least one child)
Look at GNER as well as Virgin.

Hi all,
I'm trying to get from Manchester to Cambridge next Friday evening (3rd) and back again any time on Sunday (5th).
Best I've found on TheTrainline is £58.20, with National Express weighing in at £45.
I've tried a whole load of codes found online, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any current codes or ideas to make the journey a bit cheaper?
Apart from "don't expect to find anything cheap four days in advance", of course -- just not an option, unfortunately.
Cheers!
Nope - each. Which is a lot when the equivalent flights are only £30! And it seems I'm not eligible for a railcard either. I'll just have to increase my carbon footprint and go Ryanair it seems.

Don't know about cashback but you can get 2 Nectar points per pound spent on TheTrainLine.com by going to the Nectar web site, selecting e-stores and clicking through to TheTrainLine.com.
Even if it's too close to when you're travelling to order by post you can pick the tickets up from the machine at the station, if the station has that facility.

You won't find any of the other sites undercutting Virgin. They should be exactly the same price. So apart from checking that two singles aren't cheaper than a return and being flexible on the time of day you travel, that's the best deal you will get.
Virgin have one advantage - the will offer a half saver if no cheap single is available. No other site does this. (However I don't know if this applies to first class travel)
You could also look at split tickets - I'd suggest a combination of some or all of Cheltenham Spa, Bristol (probably Parkway rather than Temple Meads), Taunton and Exeter. Make sure the train stops at the relevant stations - not all Saturday ones do. You'll have to try it for yourself - I'm not prepared to do all that for you.

Hi,
I'm looking for a way of getting 3 adults and 1 child from Southampton Airport Parkway to Newcastle, return, that costs less than ~£250 which is what I get off thetrainline and the other affiliated train fare sites, with a Family Railcard.
I am departing on Thursday 23rd August and returning on Sunday 26th, and would be travelling in the middle of the day on both occasions, Standard Class. I prefer direct trains on such a long journey, less scope for error and so would be using the Virgin Voyager service that goes up to Edinburgh.
Can anybody give us a hand, or is £250 the best we can hope for? If there are any promo codes about or "50% off all rail fares" sites that I haven't found, I'd be grateful if you could point me there in that direction. Obviously this is quite short notice but I'd appreciate any help!

Time is of the essence given I only have until Thursday morning, ideally we'd have our tickets a little in advance, is it my mistake? Should I have posted this in another thread?
I'd really appreciate any help, but to be honest just some acknowledgement, from what appears to be a friendly forum, that I exist would be a good first step! ;)
Cheers for any help or anything :)
mr_m
I fear that's the cheapest you will get it booking as late as this. It might be worth playing about with split tickets at say Birmingham, or maybe not. It will cost you nothing but a little time to experiment to find out - that fare you've got can be bought on the day so you are not going to miss out on it. Ask for a saver return.

Buy cheap standard tickets and pay £10-£15 each for a "First Weekend Upgrade" on the train, tickets subject to availability but better than paying hundreds and realising no seats!
Also, no catering facilities except shop so you will have to go to shop at weekend for free coffee etc.
not worth it IMHO

You can reduce the cost slightly by getting a season ticket. You can check the exact cost from the precise stations you are travelling from on the National Rail Season Ticket checker (http://ojp2.nationalrail.co.uk/en/pj/sts).
As a guide though
Leicester - Birmingham season tickets cost
Weekly £59.50
Monthly £228.50
3 monthly £685.50
6 months £1370.90
12 months £2,380

A Saver return is £74.00
If you know what trains you want to travel on you can buy advance singles. These start at £10 on the saturday. The very cheapest ones are gone on the Sunday, but others are available from £23.60. So that's £33.60 return.
You can only travel on the trains that you are booked on with these. Go to GNER's website and you get 10% off the advance singles. You get to these by going through the booking process as normal and when it gives you the reutrn fares available click on the "single fares available from £10" link

Cheers isasmurf, got a single going out for £10 and a single coming back for £16 on Midland mainline so got all 4 tickets I needed for £52 in the end, thanks for pointing me in the right direction though!

Virgin advance singles - certainly from Birmingham, they may even be available from Dudley. There should be some availability given that it's several weeks ahead.

GNER's website is just fine - they will sell you tickets for any company, not just their own. In 99% of cases at the same price that company would charge you.
Just price tickets with the split you think might work and see if they come out cheaper. If they don't try another split.
You have checked single tickets as well, haven't you??

Hi
I'm trying to book a journey, preferably from Warrington to London Euston(although could at a push leave from Wigan / Liverpool / Manchester).
Leaving 9am onwards on 11/12 returning 4pm onwards 12/12. (If for some reason it makes a big difference to the train fare we could make it a two night stay leaving on 10th).
Two tickets required, best I can come up with on Virgin / Trainline is £119.40 for 2. Can't manage to find any usable discount promotion codes.
Any help getting this price down would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yes - be patient and wait for the cheap single fares to be released. It's just after the winter timetable change so they may well be late because of this.
The fare you have found is a walk on fare that you can buy on the day, so you won't lose anything by waiting.
99% of the time discount codes don't exist.

Sorry, I mis-read your post originally Martin. My journey was a transpennine one  so no wonder it didn't work. Thanks :D

I successfully used the code a few days ago,(GNER rail trip) now, for the same route (different dates) it comes back as invalid
I've tried it for different routes on GNER and it comes back as invalid.
Looks like it is of no use.
Got any more??

What's the cheapest from King's Lynn to London Kings Cross travelling on the 27th December and coming back on the 30th December? Cheapest I can find for the two of us is £72 saver return.

That's the cheapest you'll get, I'm afraid. It's regarded as a suburban route and there are no advance purchase discounts. £36 each is what you'll pay on the day so no point in buying now.
I've had a quick look at split ticketing and it looks more expensive.
