Urgently need samples of fleakiller

I have a big problem with my cat Garfield. It has got fleas and we tend to leave it outside, but when we do this, it kills pidgeons which causes maggots to come. I decided that the solution is to bring the cat in, but we need to sort out the flea problem, I tried some tablets, there was no effect:confused: :eek: . Are there any flea treatment samples I can try?:eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:

Don't know about free samples but the Spot-On stuff advertised on TV works a treat.

Alternatively, if you have a pair of hair clippers you could shave your cat (no sniggering at the back!) for free :)

Morrisons sells Bob Martin 'Spot On' which works well on our cat and is much cheaper than buying similar from the vet. :)

Hi there, theres no free sample si know of but plenty if cheap ones,I bought johnsons flea treatment for my cat , all i had 2 do was put the drops on the back of his neck, it was only £2.30 and worked a treat BUT my cat had an allergic reaction to the drops and was really quite poorly, his body was going into spasms, vets said its quite common with the johnsons one, think my cats just unlucky as hes 1 of those allergic 2 allsorts....lol
hes never had fleas since tho.

I use Acclaim in the house. (not on the cat) It's expensive from the vet £15, but I can treat whole house (4 beds + 4 recep) and it lasts a whole year and one can has lasted three years so far.

I know what you mean about the birds and wildlife in general. I've four cats and we do try to keep them in in the spring when the babies are about.

If your cat has fleas pleas, please treat your cat ASAP. Fleas are a horrible thing for your cat to endure.

Can't quite work out your post, does your cat constantly live outside, never coming in? If the cat enters the house then you will have to treat any areas the cat goes to for fleas as well.

Frontline is the only effective treatment I have found. If your flea problem is quite bad, then you need this, other flea treatments are not going to be as effective. 1 drop, to the back of their neck, once a month. It kills fleas instantly, even before they have had a chance to bite your cat. Then you'll have to spray affected areas of your home, or set off a flea bomb (you clear the room of plants, animals and people for about 6 hours and set it off, it's like a smoke bomb).

As long as your cat has been seen by a vet previously then they will normally just sell this to you. You can buy it online, but I would advise against this, (as it quite a powerful chemical that enters the cats bloodstream).

Hope you solve the problem, it can be a nightmare, I've lived it (2 adopted cats who were riddles with them when we got them).

We use Stronghold spot on treatment, you do have to get it from the vets.. but worth paying for IMO

It also kills sarcoptic (fox) mites, ear mites and round worms as well as the fleas.

frontline is the only thing that works on my cat,she takes a bad reaction to all the shop bought ones so in my opinion the money we pay for the frontline is worth every penny,keeps the cat happy and keeps us and our house flea free.

Yes frontline is the best for the cat. I use it regularly but even so I have one cat who has an allergy. When it flares up, usually as the weather warms in spring, his skin is covered in scabs which looks like chicken pox. Hundreds of them, it feels as if I am stroking a bag of frozen peas. This happens over just a few days - poor cat.
He has an injection from the vet and they disappear just as quick. Apparently just a couple of fleas can do this when they have an allergy so please treat them quickly.

If you are eligible, the PDSA now offer preventative treatments such as vaccinations, neutering, microchipping and flea and worm treatments at a greatly reduced fee. The service is means tested and not available at all of their clinics yet but it might be worth a try.

i really sympathise with you as we have been through the same thing recently.

All insects love to bite me (please don't laugh!) and i have quite a reaction.

End up covered in huge scars which take ages to fade, as i itch so much when bitten!

A good tip for anyone with a tendancy to be bitten is to wash in tea tree oil - they hate it! (i use tea tree oil shampoo on my ankles!) i am making myself sound rather strange i bet??!:rotfl:

my flea treatment / prevention system! (no patents pending :rotfl: )

step 1 Go to poundland or similar...buy 2 of their flea collars...put one on cat and one in your hoover bag, to kill any eggs that may be hoovered up and hatch in there! (My vet said it is safe to use a low dose flea collar with spot ons)

STEP 2 get some form of spot on for your cat...if you can afford it go for stronghold (thats what we use) or frontline from the vet - about £20 for 3 months supply. (ocasionally people in financial difficulties can get help with vet costs from local cat charities...worth calling to see if they can help out if you need to)

STEP 3 treat all rooms and soft furnishings with a suitable spray or powder- about £15 from vets (they are stronger) or £2-5 from pet shops. (fleas spend most of their life cycle OFF the cat and in our homes...eek!)

STEP 4 during this time you should regularly brush / comb your cat and dip comb into water after each stroke, drowning fthe leas in water (some say soapy is best)

You should notice a huge improvement within a couple of weeks...check number of fleas on your cat each time you comb...it should be reducing each time.

SORRY for the long post but i thought it may help...well done if you got this far!

I know you can get some anti-lice/flea powder for birds. You can probably get it for cats as well.

Definately go for Stronghold or Frontline from the vets, none of the shop bought ones seem to work as well. May seem more expensive but it is so easy to use and so effective. Stronghold treats various parasites (see post above).

Also definately get the household flea spray from the vets. We had a rescue doberman who was alive with fleas and we brought him into the house before we realised he had fleas. He wasn't itching and being black and dirty didn't see until we bathed and groomed him that night. The vet spray is fantastic and it does seem to last ages.

Best of luck, hope you get your cat sorted out, it must be horrible for him/her in this weather being itchy.

that spot on stuff is half price in tescos at moment.Also if your on benefits pest control will spray your house for you if you have an infestation but everything has to be up off floor.
Horrible blighters are fleas I hate them as ive 5 kitties.They so dont like being treated but its necessary or youll have the insects biting you and laying eggs in your carpets yuk yuk

I think if I'm correct Boots sell this as well in their small domestic section. It's a bit cheaper than the vets, by £2 I think. I 've used this and it works.

Please note that fleas do not live on the cat all the time. They jump on for a meal and then jump off! So treating your house as well as treating the cat is a must.

One word of warning, if your cat is not well, do not use Frontline. It can give side effects and possibly lead to death. Always talk to the Vet about
using it on a cat, don't just wander in and get it off the receiptionist.

I'm not a vet but have had many a cat ( about 21 at the last count!) It gives you a bit of experiance if you know what I mean. :D
